Yeah, humans in general rationalize everything, I'll agree with that. However, what you can't argue with is that kids are 1) Stressful 2) Cost lots of money 3) Are a lot of work. I do love kids (see story about my youngest brother earlier), but man, I just don't want that responsibility for 20+ years. And even the poop, vomit, and pissing all over the place wouldn't be my biggest concern -- the teenage years would be. I remember what a mouthy pain-in-the-ass I was at 15, and even then, I was kind of shy and introverted. I can only imagine the terror of having a mouthy 15 year-old who is a party animal.

I think the average family income in the US is below $50K IIRC (too lazy to look it up, so I could be wrong). At any rate, it also depends on where you live. On the east coast or the Bay area, $50K isn't much. In the midwest, you can live well on $50K. If you live somewhere like Mississippi, I'd imagine $50K makes you very well off.

Most times, investing in a ones own flesh and blood will pay back things that money can't buy.

you are slightly out of touch with that comment. $50k is a good pay unless you are a financial idiot.

hell where i live (northern IL) 50k is great. you can get a good house and live ok with it.

So if the issue is money, not parental responsibility, then the issue is money - get it clear.

If the issue is money, the solution is to make more money and advance yourself - not to take trips over having kids and a family.

wife = time
kids = time
travel = time

You can only split yourself so many ways. If you have a family, that means less time advancing your career and less money earned and less money earned means fewer trips. Of course there are also fewer places you can go and also fewer risks you are willing to take. Maybe you wanted to live in the mountains for a year, but you can't now because you have a family and responsibilities. Maybe you wanted to live out of the backseat of your car or move from house to house every 6 months.

Life is all about sacrifices, to believe you can have it all is incredibly naive.

put another way it is all about choices, we have a finite number of choices or sacrifices we can make.


There are a vast number of ways to live your life, but they all close some doors while opening others. If you start to work on a career at a 9-5 you're going to also be choosing to stop being a night owl. If you want the freedom of changing your job every year, you're going to lose some benefits of buiding up seniority at a company. If you want to race motorcycles at the track and ride you might have to give up the time you used to spend reading, woodworking, at the lake, etc.

Having kids happens to be a BIG choice because once you have them they are priorty over everything else, and you don't get to change that.
