$4500 of rent per year (3 bd 1 ba house with garage)
not sure on food, owned a beater car or two outright but when I finally got around to getting my first vehicle loan (2 years old with 30k miles) the note is ~2600 a year(3 year loan). 360 a year for a cell, 540 for interweb.

Hell my future wife and I were putting ourselves through college while working full time as we did it(my BA her MBA) and we bought a home about 14 months after Argentina (our honeymoon)

Are you posting from 1965?

The argument can be made both ways. Some people have kids for selfish reasons, just like not having them can be for selfish reasons.

Exactly! Like I said; I'm not for or against. I just think it should be for the right reasons.

#1 Not to fill an emotional void in your life (which the kids will inevitably fail to do - if you're unhappy now having kids isn't going to "fix" you)

#2 Not because of a biological impulse to do so. Have kids when you are mature enough, and have the financial means to raise them makes a lot more sense.

People are people?

Or are the white people still fighting the brown people?

When did white people ever fight the brown people? As far as I know, it was the Native American (Asians) who mixed with the White to become "Brown".

Not everyone who is physically capable of having children, needs to have children in order to perpetuate the human race. We haven't reached the apocalypse yet. Over the last hundred years the worlds population has increased by 3.5 times. We aren't exactly an endangered species. To me it it's just as honorable to increase the quality of life for the people who are already here, rather than adding to the population.

Could always adopt a child. One of my parents and my uncle were adopted by the same family and they had great childhoods. My half-brother was adopted as well and he had a great adoptive family.

People who adopt are awesome. They don't add to the population but they improve the quality for everyone who's already here. I think you're also allowed to sometimes pick the best of the litter when you adopt. Like I want a baby that is half white half asian, blood type A-, female, prefers Wagner over Mozart, etc. When having your own kids, all you know is that the kid will be as fucked up as you are :p

I thought the process of adopting a kid was about as much fun as a IRS tax audio combined with a digital rectal exam. And it also costs an assload of money. I agree, adoption is great. Too bad they make it so impossible for most to do it.

It says it costs 0-2500 but it's really vague.

What's interesting is to look at stereotyped names of adoptable kids from that link on the right side of the page that leads to this page:
http://photolisting.adoption.com/
-Billy Ray (that's his first name, not his full name)
-Marquil
-Wilneisha
-Shakayla
-Devonta
-Justice (he's not blind!)
-Shania
-Jomie Lei (I can't even tell what race this person is)
-Christopher "Ryan" (it actually says this in quotes)
-Toddrick
-Unique (he's also bind on equip)
-Jazzpen
-Lakita
-Dwan
-Devaughn
-Dejuan

Who names these kids like this? I have never seen such a huge concentration of fucked up weird names.

MJinZ is the new Casiotech. Chest-bumping matches galore

casiotech is before my time so i had to check google. First google result:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Casiotech
1 - Ultimate i love you who spends his nightlife as a shit packer
by AT Off Topic Feb 12, 2008

2 - A gigantic tool that has an obsession with Diesel jeans and all things overly expensive. Consistently lies about things to impress the ladies, but never seems to understand why people laugh. Often claims 'ownage' against people or whole forums, but usually only succeeds in 'owning' himself. Often uses the pseudonym of Enrique to fulfill homo-erotic fantasies. Has been known to write urban dictionary definitions for casiotech that are full of crap.

Meh, overall I enjoy having kids. Sure there are times I think "Man, i could be rich without them" but I enjoy their company and when they go away wherever I actually feel kinda down.

They do create extra stress though, so definitely not for everyone. Busting your ass at work for 10 hours and then come home and having to play trains with your son for another hour takes.....mental discipline.

Nieces, nephews, and cousins can fill that void for us, and the beauty is that we don't have to take them home with us when the event is over. :)
They can't. Most people will never feel as much love for a human as they do their kids. I never realized how much my parents may have loved me until I had my own kids; no matter how much you're told it's not real until you have your own. Having a two year old come into your room in the middle of night looking to sleep next to you cannot be bought.

The older I get the more I realize we as people just rationalize everything. You're doing it right now and so am I. We use it to make the situations we are in appear better and cement them. Case in point: I said I'd never own a minivan. I bought one and now I sing their praises.

I occasionally drive my parent's Grand Caravan and it sucks. Sorry. Unless I'm moving some random stuff.

You rip on 50k a year salary as being "piddly", yet you drive your parents minivan around.

Gotcha.

Uh, so what? My car cost me $30K but can't carry anything?

I know you were offended by the $50K comment, but $50K is not a lot of money to be making - for our age, sure it's not bad, but it's not something to be aspiring to. I don't make much more than $50K, and it's quite piddly living in places like Boston.
