It's disgusting. It's a SCHOOL fer cryin' out loud, aye!

Wait till Falwell shows up with Checks for schools who disallow anything other than Protestant Christianity. ;)

i completely agree.

If school wasn't required, nobody would go. Then our country would REALLY be in trouble.

With Jerry, I wouldn't be surprised.

the solution would not be to eliminate manditory schooling.... it would be to eliminate the "ensnaring" part"

Quite funny if you're making a joke, AC. Not funny at all if you actually understand where they're coming from, what's driving them, and why.

Excuse me, and I hate to be so contrary, but (in Indiana, anyway) you're wrong, according to this page:
Anyone 14 or older who profanely curses, damns or swears by the name of God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Ghost, shall be fined one to three dollars for each offense, with a maximum fine of ten dollars per day.

And my parents are ones. Personal rant / anecdote follows: I have to listen to almost all of my music on headphones because they have an extreme case of musical elitism (is that even a word?), and I dare not even think about asking to go see a R-rated movie. They debated long and hard about letting me go to see Jurassic Park III (PG-13) with a friend's parents and their kids. In the end, they did let me go, but (as far as I can guess) only because they didn't want to be so embarrassed about their "issues" in front of the kid's parents. Oh, and they don't stop there; whenever I start doing something slightly different (stop wearing hats, comb my hair in a different style, etc.), they immediately grill me with questions about it, as if they would be pissed if I told them it happened to be the latest fashionable style (it usually isn't, btw, but anyway...). For what it's worth, I can't even say "crap" without getting yelled at, since they tend to think slang ranks right up there with the f-word on the evilness of words chart. Did I forget to mention that "every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great; if a sperm is wasted, God gets quite irate" (and no, they're not Catholic).

Haha, I'm trying. They're slowly getting used to the fact that I will continue listening to Pink Floyd, Tenacious D, Dream Theater, etc. even if they don't like it and think that I shouldn't. We'll be working on the movie issue next. :)

No mention of this concept of "separation of church and state."

The idea of seperation of church and state, while not specifically in the Constitution, is nonetheless one of the supreme laws of our country based on the Supreme Court's interpretation of it. Remember, once the Supreme Court decides something such as applying the priniciple of separation of church and state, that is law on the same level as the Constitution.

I don't have the time to write the replies I would like to write, so I'm going to drop out of this thread until I have sufficient time to reply properly.

However...

The Constitution forbids the state from sponsoring a religion, & I suppose it could potentially be interpreted the reverse direction as well (though how religion can directly control government, I do not know), but a group of students engaging in religious activity ON THEIR OWN does not violate that.

I do not support teacher led prayer, I do not believe that religion should be taught in school.

But if the students want to pray, hold meetings, talk to other people, etc. on their own time that is their business.

I would support the same rights for any religion, and even for gay/lesbian interests - As long as it is applied equally.

Like I said before, if a gay/lesbian interest group had been distributing info there would have been a massive outcry after suspensions.

This should be no different.

Remember this, as soon as you restrict someone else's freedom you are one step closer to losing your own. I may not agree with other religions, and I certainly don't care for gay/lesbian interest groups - But they have every right to group & be heard...

As do I.

when they are doing it on government property during the time where the faculty and staff of the school are working to provide us an education which is all paid for by public tax dollars i have a problem with it. if they did it in there own home, or their church or their compund i couldn't care less, its none of any bodies business at that point. but when a school says its ok for religious groups to do missionary work on campuses during school hours (which is all paid for by public tax dollars) i think that constitutes the respect of religion which i don't like. the principal didn't say hey you cant worship jesus at your house or in your church he said you cant pass out propoganda on school grounds during school time.

^-- this symbolize my feelings about this.
Man, I hear you. My family is mostly Southern Baptist, thus, when I wanted to go to school dances, it was only due to the fact we lived 3,000 miles away that I was able to attend. I still remember the day my father had an alcoholic drink in the house.
I was severly reprimanded for using the word "shoot" once within earshot of my GrandFather.
My uncle and his wife<she's the big instigator> would go through my other GrandFathers house looking for his stash of JackDaniels, then would pour it out. :| This still aggravates me, even though He's been gone for several years.<that's another rant for another thread on another day>
I mean here's an 80+ year old man, outlived 2 wives, worked all of his life, basically just a good old man living out his life and he has a drink or two in the evening. NEVER drove drunk, or even left the house after having a "toddy".
My brother, after he moved back there, made sure he always had whatever he wanted to drink.

Humorous side story.... My GreatGrandmother once went to a "Revival Meetin'" back during "The Prohibition". She turned over to the preacher about $25K my GreatGrandFather had . Now he just happened to be involverd in the "private manufacturing and distribution" :D of what is commonly known as "Moonshine". When he got home and found out, he chased her down the street threatening to shoot her with the .22 ! :Q :Q They were married all of their lives, and grew very old together. :D

That whole masturbation thing goes back to a time when infant mortality was high. The other aspect of it has to do with self control/ living excessively. Go figure....
One thing I will say is that I subsequently exposed myself to different theologies as a way of understanding why we get so zealous in our quest for salvation.

I believe very strongly in the seperation of church and state.

And no, this is not because of any law or constitutional article. This is a personal belief.

But, I don't see what is wrong with passing out flyers as long as the school didn't sponsor it.

this is another dumb lawsuit. They were on school property doing something they knew they weren't allowed to do. I hate dumb lawsuits. It'd be like me suing a cop for pulling me over for speeding. I "could" say it was my way of expressing how much I love my car and I was excersizing my freedom of speech, but please... If they get away with this, I might have to start driving a gazilliong mph everywhere I go.

So should I be able to hand out flyers that promote devil worship??? I bet that wouldn't go over well and it would be the christians that would try to prevent me from doing. They would use the same ideas that they are trying to oppose to prevent me from doing it.

Letting students do this at school opens a whole new can of worms we don't want to see.

What a great analogy...
