No mention of this concept of "separation of church and state."
The idea of seperation of church and state, while not specifically in the Constitution, is nonetheless one of the supreme laws of our country based on the Supreme Court's interpretation of it. Remember, once the Supreme Court decides something such as applying the priniciple of separation of church and state, that is law on the same level as the Constitution.
I don't have the time to write the replies I would like to write, so I'm going to drop out of this thread until I have sufficient time to reply properly.
However...
The Constitution forbids the state from sponsoring a religion, & I suppose it could potentially be interpreted the reverse direction as well (though how religion can directly control government, I do not know), but a group of students engaging in religious activity ON THEIR OWN does not violate that.
I do not support teacher led prayer, I do not believe that religion should be taught in school.
But if the students want to pray, hold meetings, talk to other people, etc. on their own time that is their business.
I would support the same rights for any religion, and even for gay/lesbian interests - As long as it is applied equally.
Like I said before, if a gay/lesbian interest group had been distributing info there would have been a massive outcry after suspensions.
This should be no different.
Remember this, as soon as you restrict someone else's freedom you are one step closer to losing your own. I may not agree with other religions, and I certainly don't care for gay/lesbian interest groups - But they have every right to group & be heard...
As do I.
