Students attend school's FIRST racially integrated prom

While I commend (most of) the students of this school for advocating doing the right thing and eventually getting it - I have to say this is a slap in the face for anyone who mistakenly thinks racism has been wiped out in this country. Southern Georgia is quite clearly living 60 years + in the past.

Students attend school's first integrated prom
ASHBURN, Georgia (CNN) -- Students of Turner County High School started what they hope will become a new tradition: Black and white students attended the prom together for the first time on Saturday.

In previous years, parents had organized private, segregated dances for students of the school in rural Ashburn, Georgia, 160 miles south of Atlanta.

"Whites always come to this one and blacks always go to this one," said Lacey Adkinson, a 14-year-old freshman at the school of 455 students -- 55 percent black, 43 percent white. (Watch students arrive at dance Video)

"It's always been a tradition since my daddy was in school to have the segregated ones, and this year we're finally getting to try something new," she said. (Audio slide show: A town breaks with tradition)

Adkinson's sister, Mindy Bryan, attended a segregated prom in 2001.

"There was not anybody that I can remember that was black," she said. "The white people have theirs, and the black people have theirs. It's nothing racial at all."
Breaking away from traditions

But this year's upperclassmen -- 213 students total --voted to have just one official prom.

"It's been a dream of all of ours," Senior Class President James Hall said.

"We didn't want to put emphasis on integrated blacks and whites coming together. We just wanted to put emphasis on this was our first school prom," Principal Chad Stone said.

The theme of the first official prom: Breakaway.

"It was fitting already because we are breaking away from the past traditions here in Turner County School," Hall said.

Another tradition that ended this year -- having two separate homecoming queens.

"You pick the homecoming queen for their personalities and being a role model," explained Roshunda Pierce, 16, as she waited to get her nails done for prom.

In the past, two queens were chosen -- one white, one black.

But not everyone in the town of 4,400, famous for its peanuts and Fire Ant Festival, was breaking with the past.

The "white prom" still went on last week.

"We did everything like a regular prom just because we had already booked it," said, Cheryl Nichols, 18, who attended the dance.

Nichole Royal, 18, said black students could have gone to the prom, but didn't.

"I guess they feel like they're not welcome," she said.

Nichols said while her parents were in support of the integrated prom, some of her friends weren't allowed to go.

"If they're not coming tonight it's because either they had to work and they couldn't get out of it or because their parents are still having an issue because they grew up in south Georgia," she said.

"I've asked, 'Why can't you come?' and they're like, 'My mommy and daddy -- they don't agree with being with the colored people,' which I think is crazy," she said.

Stone said he doesn't plan to stop the private proms.

"That's going to be up to the parents. That's part of being in America. If they want to do that for the kids, then that's fine," he said.
Looking toward the future

Outside the prom on Saturday, parents and relatives of students talked as the students filed into the Turner Civic Center.

"If they are picking so much for it to be united, why was there a prom last week for the white, when they are supposed to be united for tonight?" asked Lisa Hall.

Valerie McKellar echoed that sentiment as she watched white and black students pose together.

"That is so fake. There is nothing real about that," she said.

"That's just like you're cooking a half-baked cake, putting the icing on it, and when you cut the cake, the cake ain't no good. That's how this prom is," she said.

McKellar said the prom was a good step, but more needs to be done.

"There is a time and season for all things, and right now it's time for Turner County to make a change."
A success in the students' eyes

Inside the auditorium, students put the controversy aside and danced for hours. Stone said he was pleased with the outcome. About 150 students, including some dates from other schools, attended.

Students leaving the prom praised the evening.

"We been separated for a while. I sure appreciate how the school got all of us together, and we had a blast" said John Holmes, 16.

Aneisha Gipson, who was crowned prom queen, said the night could not have been better.

"Amazing. It was absolutely amazing. It was perfect."

Superintendent Ray Jordan said he couldn't be more proud of Stone and his students.

"If I could write this story it would be a story of celebration of students making a difference for themselves and for future students. I believe they wanted to leave their mark, and I certainly believe they've done that."

Separating people by color as though it is no big deal

Are Asians to be called Yellow People

At least she didn't say White People and Coloreds like they used to say there

Yeah, that seems pretty basic to me. Racism isn't just assholes in white sheets, it can be a lot more basic than that...like embracing the idea that white people and black people are just fundamentally different and it's normal that they don't "go together".

Most students are black. They had separate proms. Why are the white students being singles out as the racists?

My school had a white only dance a few weeks before prom too (yes, South ftw). MY sister got mad about it and such since shes like that, but most people didn't care. I know, it is more or less racist, but it was some hundred plus year old tradition and apparently nobody wanted to stop it.

Umm, actually its pretty much true.

Hear me out before you go on your tirade please...

Dealmonkey is obviously very vocal when it comes to racism and what he believes is or isnt racist. But then again he lives in Orange County, California one of the richest areas in the country and also one of the smallest African American communities in the country at 1.6%.

Try living in New Orleans for awhile like I did before Katrina and like I will again in about 2 more weeks. Try coaching a basketball team at a large school like I do now in Arkansas until I move back home. You will quickly go from being the majority white to the minority. Most of the schools in our conference are overwhelmingly black as are their teams, just like ours.

If you look around you will see segregation everywhere and it isn't because we mean old white people are oppressing everyone. You will see it because people naturally segregate themselves. Go into any school cafeteria while there are lots of kids there. You have atheletes of various sports and then you have the various cliques many of which are very much determined by race.

Hell if you have the guts to ask a stranger or have a friend that you are close enough to ask and get a serious non-PC answer then ask them if blacks and whites are the same.

We aren't and it isnt a bad thing. Sure we have the same fundamental desires in life, but that doesn't mean we will dress, walk, talk, act, or think the same.

As far as a segregated prom goes, I don't see a problem with it at all to be honest. I think that either race should be allowed to go to the other prom if they wanted to contribute their time or money to making it happen, but I don't believe that they should be forcefully desegregated either.

Senior prom is a once in a lifetime thing and if the whites or blacks wanted to get together and spend their money to decorate the hall in a certain way, have certain types of food or drinks, or have a certain type of musical theme I don't see the problem with that.

At some people you guys have to realize that different is not a synonym for evil. People can be different and that can be ok.

We don't all have to pretend to be the same or have the same interests.

Of course people are different. There are different cultures, languages, ethnicities and religions all over the world. However, segregation in this sence is enforced separation, inferring that mixing white and black would be a bad thing. In the interest of bringing more people together, I think it would be better to not have separate proms. However, clearly some of the parents (perhaps on both sides) still support separation, which I think is a rather negative attitude, and completely baseless. There might be different crowds within a highschool, but they all have a common ground.

genetically speaking black and whites are not so different, its is the cultures that cause 99% of the differences. Men and women are far far far more different genetically than black to whites. OF course make sure not to say that at Harvard where you will be fired for saying mens and womens brains are not the same.

Who cares about her - in 6 months she'll be pregnant while living in a trailer huffing paint. Instead of doing stories about integration, they should do a meet and greet to introduce the next generation of welfare moms to America.

Ahhhh, the classic apathetic racist. Eh, I know it's wrong, but I just can't bother . . .

For the record, before moving to the OC about a year ago, I lived in Long Beach California, one of the country's most diverse city (if not THE most diverse) for a dozen years. So don't draw any false conclusions based on where I happen to live right now.

Really though why is this even a big deal? If people want to stick to their own race, own culture, etc...who cares? Its a free country, let them do what they want. You shouldn't force people to associate with people that they don't want to associate with.

Why is it acceptable for every race or culture other than whites to stick together? This type of stuff goes on all over the country, black fraternities, united negro college fund, China town, etc..... Try any of these things with just white people and you'd be villified. As long as their are no laws segregating people by race, or descriminating against one race, people should be allowed to do as they please.

Personally I think it'd be boring as hell to just associate with people that look just like you and are from the same culture, but if some people want to do it then whats the big deal?

Proms are boring and way over-rated. So what does this integrated prom offer the Black Students? A chance to dance to all the white songs and hang out with white people? Maybe they would rather not hang out with white people at a white party? Just because it is integrated, it does not make it better.

This is kind of like the lunch room at a high school. The kids sit in groups in the lunch room so they should be able to party in groups too.

Integration is not necessarily an improvement. It is nice for some mixing and interaction with people of different races in a setting of equality and fairness, but it will not solve all the problems in our society.

Thats exactly what I was thinking of. I remember in my high school at lunch, Asians would sit with Asians, blacks would sit with blacks, then most of the white kids were split up into their different groups. There was no racism involved, its just how people are, and how they have been for thousands of years.

Maybe these kids are friends with people of all/both races during school time, during school functions, during the bake sale, during pep assemblies, during school car washes and other fundraisers, group assignments etc etc.. Then when prom time rolls around they have to choose which to go to based on their race. While I agree the whole prom thing is over rated, some people really dig that type of stuff and think it's a huge deal. And just maybe they want to share that experience with their classmates of same and different races.
