COLUMBUS, Georgia (AP) -- A high school student was suspended for 10 days for refusing to end a cell phone call with his mother, a soldier serving in Iraq, school officials said.

The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was "defiant and disorderly" and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.

The confrontation Wednesday began after the 17-year-old junior got a call at lunchtime from his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, who left in January for a one-year tour with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion.

Cell phones are allowed on campus but may not be used during school hours. When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."

Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.

"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

Only in GA!

The kid should have been polite and maintained an even keel, but the school should have been understanding and given him a quiet room to sit in.

That's a situation where Iwould say screw the rules, and would gladly take a 10 day suspension to finish talking with my mom.

Hard to know exactly what happened here. Easy first reaction is OMGWTF?!?!?!? He was talking to his mom in iraq!!!

But if he was an a$$hole about it and truly using profanity and being defiant, then he deserved it.

Maybe the teacher wouldn't listen/believe him. I would have just walked outside the school.

Anyway, hard to know what truly happened.

Would you take a 10-day suspension to use profanity on your way to the office?

It would depend on how the situation went down. If the teacher forced him to hang up, then I could see his point. If he stayed on the phone and finished his call and then was told to go to the office and then he flipped out, then 10 days sounds about right. It sounds like this kid did have a temper problem. The article's too vague on the incident to form an opinion.

He wasn't suspended for the phone call, he was suspended for being disorderly and using profanity to a teacher. The article is clearly misleading and you all fell for it. I'd say the kid deserved it.

If his mother ended up being killed over there from an IED, I would march into that school and tell the whole administration to fvck off and then I'd piss on the door of every faculty member who insisted on suspending me. That's just me though.

Is everyone ignoring this part?

you people that sympathize with the school are fvucksticks I swear

How often do you think his mom has a chance to call him? I don't care if he did use profanity, I would have had the same reaction.
