Stronghold 3? Anyone interested in it?

I just heard of this game from another thread so I checked out some videos on you tube. I'm going to give Stronghold crusaders a try even though it's fairly old, at least it got a high score, like 96 from the users. Unfortunately, Stronghold 2 only got a 43 so... we'll have to wait and see about Stronghold 3.

From the videos though it kind of looked like Rome Total War when you attack a town wall, that was some of my favourite gameplay in that game.

I loved the first Stronghold, but didn't like the second much at all.

The new one looks great, but I'll need to play a demo before buying.

# 1 was awesome, really really good game. # 2 was horrible, really really bad game. So im going to have to wait till i read numerous reviews first before i even get interested in this game, and will likely wait for it to go on sale unless everyone raves about how awesome it is.

If you pre-order from Steam you get the first version for 'free' along with the 'Tower of London' map.

Hope the developer learned something from their last release of the series.

There's something about the charm of Isometric 2D games like Age of Empires, Pharaoh, and Stronghold that 3D engines in their current state for most RTS games can't really replicate.

I have to say, the art direction in studios like Relic and Creative Assembly is talented, to be able to keep a visual style and focus that looks good in a 3D engine.

I'm interested. Been replaying 1 & 2 lately to get myself reaquainted with the series again. I'm not preordering though. I'll watch for early reviews and see if its worth plunking down (although with today's digital downloads I should say 'clicking' I guess) money on it. I'm hoping its good. Not enough of these types of games these days. I miss them.

I always wanted that expansion... I sent my parents out to buy me it and they came back with a populous the beginning expansion which turned out to be a wrongly boxed populous the beginning full game :awe: Still wanted cleopatra expansion though :\

Right back atcha. I started playing when I was 8 or 9. What a game. Damn, I feel very old now.

Just this past winter, I started playing Pharaoh, Zeus, and Rise of the Middle Kingdom again with some family. Good times.

You know, there is Ceasar 4 which is pretty recent and a great game!

I kind of disagree. It's strange how 3D has kind of ruined the charm of these old 2d isometric games.

The Germans are doing a better job of it with the Anno and Settlers series, but tbh, the entire series is becoming stale imo.

Settlers is too generic, Anno is too formulaic.

E.G. take game engine, apply new Era (Ancient, Medieval, Future), make game & apply generic civilization (Rome in Caesar, "Euro Civ" in Anno 1404 & Settlers, "Industry vs. Eco Civ" in Anno 2061

Don't even start. :p

<-- started playing Caesar 2 when he was 13.

I still go back and play C2 occasionally. Works great in Dosbox.

I did like Caesar 4, but I also agree that the 2D isometric graphics can be better than the 3D stuff. Can often get more personality out of the pre-drawn images than you can out of the 3D rendered images.

Guys (or girls) thanks for the support and the rallying. I WISH I COULD SAY I sent my parents out. I just turned 53 so do the math.

:D

Just got an Xbox 360 last summer. That too is also becoming a time sink.
Have 2 games... Just waiting to be opened. Fable 2 and ME2.
I keep trying to get innto LA Noire. I love it. LOVE the concept. Dont like I can totally screw up an interogation and still move forward.
Anyone rememeber the Wing Commander games? If you lost space battle "X" the next battle came from the "hard tree". More enemies or more powerful enemies. If you won, the next battle came from the "easy tree".
Man, does anyone do that anymore?

Side Note... I think it was WC 2... I had bought my PC and it was doing all I wanted. Was all full of myself. From PC Richards I believe.
Paid too much.
Wing Commander 2. 34 MEG install. YES MEG.....
Twice the size of my hard drive.
I can rememeber scrimping and saving and driving to Comp USA to buy a 170 MEG Western Digital.

I remember back when I first started gaming in '93. I was about 31 or so at the time. Yeah, I was a late bloomer LOL Anyway I think it was Computer Gaming World magazine that had the article that was saying the average age of PC gamers back then was 35. Which makes sense considering a good rig would go for thousands of dollars. I spent $3500 for my first rig which was a beast at the time. The wife thought I was nuts. The average age of a gamer today may be younger but there's still plenty of us older guys and gals about. We have the most disposable cash afterall and we're the ones introducing PC gaming to our kids and grand kids in many cases.

Anyway I been playing SH1 on my laptop when away from the house and SH2 on my main PC when home. I haven't tried The Crusader and Legend expansions yet. I want to finish SH2 first. I bought the whole bundle off of steam a little while back when it went on sale. I'm glad I did. Having a lot of fun with them. If you like these kind of games I recommend the bundle. You get a lot for only a little bit of money and they play well on W7.

The next Anno looks pretty sick being set in 2070 and using under water elements:

I haven't really gotten into the German civ/trade type games, they seem to lack the depth or polish that something like Civilization offers.

I just noticed today that Stronghold 3 is now out on Steam. I'll have to start watching for reviews.
