I just heard of this game from another thread so I checked out some videos on you tube. I'm going to give Stronghold crusaders a try even though it's fairly old, at least it got a high score, like 96 from the users. Unfortunately, Stronghold 2 only got a 43 so... we'll have to wait and see about Stronghold 3.
From the videos though it kind of looked like Rome Total War when you attack a town wall, that was some of my favourite gameplay in that game.
There's something about the charm of Isometric 2D games like Age of Empires, Pharaoh, and Stronghold that 3D engines in their current state for most RTS games can't really replicate.
I have to say, the art direction in studios like Relic and Creative Assembly is talented, to be able to keep a visual style and focus that looks good in a 3D engine.

You know, there is Ceasar 4 which is pretty recent and a great game!
Right back atcha. I started playing when I was 8 or 9. What a game. Damn, I feel very old now.

Just this past winter, I started playing Pharaoh, Zeus, and Rise of the Middle Kingdom again with some family. Good times.
I kind of disagree. It's strange how 3D has kind of ruined the charm of these old 2d isometric games.
The Germans are doing a better job of it with the Anno and Settlers series, but tbh, the entire series is becoming stale imo.
Settlers is too generic, Anno is too formulaic.
E.G. take game engine, apply new Era (Ancient, Medieval, Future), make game & apply generic civilization (Rome in Caesar, "Euro Civ" in Anno 1404 & Settlers, "Industry vs. Eco Civ" in Anno 2061
