Yeah I have only owned/used one 8-track unit in my life, didn't care for them when I had a CD player nearby.

Funny seeing a Realistic audio component. I helped my GF move a friend of hers to a new apt, we are all in our mid fourties and I consider myself somewhat of an audiophile, and when I unboxed her stereo system I was pleasantly surprised to see this 30 year old receiver from Realistic! I forget the model number but I hooked it up, it had the flywheel tuner knob, the whole thing was solid metal and wood sides and had the famous Realistic Expansion stereo control! She also had some 30+ year old realistic tower speakers. So after I hooked it all up I attached my Archos AV-500 mp3 player to it via 3.5mm to RCA cable and hooked it up to the TV/AUX connection and cranked out some tunes and this system sounded just great! Ahhh, yesteryears stuff was made really well for a good price. Today you have to pay a premium for stuff that lasts even a decade.

I had a Muntz 4/8 track player in the car. There was a switch to go from 4 to 8 tracks. It slid into a wooden mounting box underneath the dash in my '63 Corvair Monza convertible. You could pull it from the mounting box, and use adaptors to make it a home bedroom stereo.
Pretty slick for 1968!

I still have that 8-track player from the 70s, the one with the T handle that also changed the tracks. I still own a few dozens 8-track cartridges but I'm sure they would disintegrate if I ever tried to play them.

Sure 8 tracks did sound great back in the 80s but compared to today's technology, it just pure garbage.

The lossless formats reproduce the sound perfectly so what's your point?
Analog sound reproduction like music on magnetic tape or vinyl records introduce all kind of audible noise no matter how sophisticated the playback hardware is.

A digital signal recorded on those media would actually sound better. When using 1 and 0 there is no imperfections, no noise, just perfectly encoded music easily reproducible. A 44 KHz sampling rate recording will reproduce 100% of the sound.

CD is not a lossless format. DVD-A and SACD are closer but those are nowhere to be found.

Am I confusing compression with losssless? I've always considered CD audio, .wav, FLAC or other uncompressed digital files to be lossless whereas .mp3 and .wma formats are compressed and considered lossy. Or are you arguing that a digital waveform regardless of the format will always have square edges that approximate an analog waveform but can't perfectly fit a curve without an infinite number of samples per second.

If the latter, last time I was in Fry's they had a small selection of modern music for sale on vinyl LPs, it's the first time I've seen vinyl for sale in a chain store since the 80's. I'm not sure if other Fry's locations sell music on vinyl or not, it may be a regional thing, my city has several "record stores" that sell vinyl as well.
