I know the feeling, that's why I quit my sysadmin job for NOC. The manager at the sysadmin job was an asshole and he was pretty much the main source of stress. Now I love my job. Super laid back and zero stress, and I end up making more money because of shift differentials, more OT opportunities etc.

Sometimes it's worth taking a "downgrade" if it will be less stress. There's no reason to subject yourself to that level of stress every day.

He does. Unless you're a pro surfer or something. I can find a number of things I enjoy doing outside of work. I can't imagine any job outside of being a pro athlete that I would voluntarily do if money wasn't an object.
Let me ask if you've always had this outlook or, developed it from childhood and work experience? Personally, I need to work. If I got paid to simply watch others work, I'd go postal because I have zero tolerance for those who can but don't contribute.

Is the sun not gonna come up if he fails, or the oceans drain into oblivion?

no but i'll certainly be fired if i don't put every effort into fixing it soon

probably not fired while the problem is happening because they'd need me, but as soon as things were back to mostly normal? i'd get kicked to the curb.

Fuck stress!

Always remember...stress can't get you if you just stop caring.

(that doesn't mean you don't do your job to the best of your ability...just stop caring about it...it's just a job)

If you're salaried and regularly pushing insane hours, I have a tip for you - the job isn't worth having.

Maybe. But I also have a tip for you. No matter how highly you think of yourself, you can easily be replaced.

Get your resume out there ASAP.

I wouldn't worry about vesting. You will probably get paid more in another job. That would offset any sort of vesting you're waiting for.

I have an even bigger tip for you - when you have marketable, in-demand skills, you don't need to work insane hours regularly for fear of being replaced because you can literally get a new job at the drop of a hat. If a company wants to replace me because I refuse to work like a slave, I won't lose any sleep. That probably won't happen because I'd leave first.

I mean seriously, I'll never understand the "OMG!! I might get laid off if I don't work 60+ hours per week and take my vacation time - the stress is killing me!" logic. It makes no sense.

I can't easily be replaced. Replacing me would take at least two people, and at a minimum, a doubling of office support.

I feel for you man. I've been in that situation several times and it sucks. Was this your fault or did you get the hot potato last and thus got screwed?

Everybody is replaceable quite easily even if it may potentially affect how/if the work gets done. Bean counters don't care about how the work gets done they just care about the cost. Everybody else will just have to make due with the loss.

This whole mass layoff stuff that keeps happening everywhere is only going to get worse too. Capitalist companies are always seeking to increase profits and they've reached a plateau where there is nowhere left to cut, but cutting even more people. Automation will help this happen faster too. There are a lot of jobs that could easily be automated but arn't due to various reasons/inefficiencies. That is going to change in the next few years I think.

Pretty much any job where you sit at a desk can be automated. The ones that are harder to automate can just be outsourced.

Seems schools need to start teaching more business related knowledge. I think the future of employment will be people working for themselves, as it will be too hard to find a job. People are slowly starting to become more aware of the importance of buying locally, or at least from your own country, let's hope this makes it so small businesses can actually survive.

lol not yet. The powers that be want you under their thumb or working for them. Small business owner/self employed are fucked.

I dare you to prove me wrong.

:colbert:

Sadly your probably right, this whole system is designed so that we are always at the mercy of corporations and the government. But at some point something has to give. The way we are going forward now is not long term sustainable.

Sure you've seen my bitching, I'm out an extra $6K for health. That is not easy money to forgive. That's a year of my kid's high school, etc.

Anywho, Happy New Year, Red.

Why are you stressed? Is it fear of losing the job? If so, is it because the job is not something you can find a good replacement for?

The thing is corporations don't care about human capital anymore, pretty much to their own detriment.

Yeah humans are just seen as a cost that they'd rather eliminate. Most actually make more money selling to other corporations and could survive without us.
