Street Fighter Question: Ryu is Korean, right?

I am pretty sure Ryu is Korean but my brother says no. Was it Ken? Oh and while we're at it, who would win Ryu or Ken?
I remember a thread a couple of months back but can't seem to find it.

EDIT: Hmm... after looking around on Google, it seems that Ryu is Japanese. Is there a Korean character in Street Fighter? I am sure that someone on this board said one of the characters were Korean and he even included Korean phrases.
 
I think the bigger question is how do you pronounce "Ryu"- is it "Rye-ooo" or "Rue"? I've heard both...

According to Street Fighter II, Ryu is from Japan, and Ken is from the USA (at least their "home stages" took place in those countries). I'm no expert on the Street Fighter series as a TV show or comic book or whatever, but thats what I took from playing the video game.
 
In the SFII Animated movie, they pronouced his name as Rue. I always pronounced it as Ryu (ry-you)
 
Ken got the dragon punch better.

Ryu has the fireball better.

Ryu is stronger, i think.

Plus he has a cool charcol grey suit u can select.
 
In general for the video game Ken is faster than Ryu, but Ryu is stronger than Ken.

It depends on the version of Street Fighter you're playing though
in Street Fighter II there wasn't really any differences between them, but in Championship Edition and beyond they started to differ more and more.

One way to tell the difference is obviously to do a Dragon Punch and you'll see that Ken's arcs alot more than Ryu's making it a more aggressive attack. But if you only connect once with Ken's then it will do very little damage. Ken's dragon punch can connect together for up to 5 hits though, while Ryu's can only connect for 2 hits max. Another good example is the hurricane kick. Ryu's will only connect once but will do lots of damage in the one hit, while Ken's will connect a few times.

In general, Ryu is a better character than Ken (at least in my opinion) since his moves will do more damage and he isn't terribly slower than Ken. Most of Ken's moves are weaker than Ryu's, so much that the extra speed doesn't really make up the difference.

I'm sure there are people who love playing Ken who would disagree with me there though 🙂
 
If any of you study a Japanese martial arts, the style you study is referred to as a 'Ryu.' So knowing that I would assume that Ryu in Street Fighter is Japanese. Also, again in the budo setting you would pronounce ryu such as it sounds like: roo. However, evertime I think of the game I have a habit of saying Rye-u (rye as in the Russian bread).
 
I would OWN you all! i'll put my money where my mouth is....someone host a SF tourney and i'll be der...none of that alpha crap or SF3....just SF2 championship turbo please!
 
I've always found that Ryu in SFA3 to be a bit faster then ken. His jumps are a bit quicker I've found. I prefer using Ryu over Ken. ken is strong and has a good Dragon Punch but I prefer Ryu's style and his jump spacing works better against good Chun Li fighters! Cant' beat them with Ken🙁
 
Ryu has a much better fierce kick than Ken does. Ken's fierce kick is a shin buster while Ryu's is a high scissor kick.

That being said, I like playing as ken due to the arcing dragon uppercut, but in general, ryu is a better character

Wrong. They're brothers and they're both taekwondo fighters. That's a Korean art. When they do their moves, they speak Korean -the same names I was taught in my Taekwondo school for the same moves that they do. That's a Korean language.

They're of anglo descent. Ryu is the hardcore, upstanding, old fasioned martial artist while Ken is the hardcore party animal badass.

It's too bad that the makers of SF actually put a Korean fighter (Ryu) in Japan, misleading many people.

how can "Ryu" be a korean??? its a japanese name...what a about "AKUMA"? isn't he the master?
i don't think they speak korean...AFAIK they learned "KARATE" in japan....its similar to taekwondo but its totally different martial art
u learned same move??? which move??? its not korean language
 
Ryu is Japanese and the Japanese pronunciation is actually closer to "LeeOooo" or "Lew" (watch the undubbed SF anime for reference), though no one in the US says it that way. 🙂

I still remember one of my friends insisting that Guile was pronounced "GUL-eee".

It is Korean. I'm not sure about the name. Ken and Ryu don't practice Karate, they work with Taekwondo. There's no way in hell Ryu is Japanese and practices Karate unless the game designers are f'ing morons.

I don't have the correct spellings with me here at work, but I have a book at home that I got when I signed up at my school showing the same style of moves with the Korean pronunciation of the move which is virtually identical to the characters pronunciations when the moves are performed.
