nestlewater, how about diagonal directions? Spinning 360s on the keyboard? How about 2 in 1s?
I usually use my keyboard for SF2 on mame, but it's only really for some characters. Combos take a lot more effort. Forget about doing a crouching sonicboom or a spinning piledriver..
Do you have any feedback on how the arcade stick is with mame? Wonder if it's close to the real arcade experience.
The diagonals depend on the game. CERTAIN fighting games will read a quick transition like down, right, and insert a diagonal for you if the transition was quick, So in ways it's assuming you wanted quater circle forward.
The only other type, is you must input down, downright, right. This might seem like alot of work but it's a VERY fluid motion. Think how a joystick makes these moves as they only have 4 microswitches just like what you're using. It hits the down key, while that happens it engages the right key, then lets go of the down key. In practice this is actually very easy.
AND on ARCADE Experience." If thats what you WANT, then buy an arcade stick, the BETTER tool will still be a keyboard or any other device that lets you engage the microswitches perfectly and with NO TRAVEL (STICK) which is delay essentially whatsoever.
The delay is the time it takes for the stick to engage the microswitch, only a split second, but fighting games are broken down to 1/30th of a second 2 frames, very often, so it DOES make a bit of a difference. ON AN arcade stick, you have to move the stick before you hit strong punch/kick, for a throw, very slightly, on keyboard no such issue, just hit forward/back with strong punch/kick simultaneously. ONE OF THE BIGGEST Advantages.
We're arguing tools here, not Experience of the player, or traditions.
Edit: Oh, and if this game does come out for the PC with HIGH resolution support 25x16 etc, All this slitting of my wrists and worshiping satan would be worth it. Ha, I also had to look up how to spell satan

I've tried playing on a keyboard and found it hard to do the quarter circles consistently because Capcom games require you to input the diagonal. If you go straight from down to right it won't work, but that's what I end up doing a lot when trying to do a fast quarter circle on the keyboard, and especially when I try to do a fast double quarter circle.

Lmao.. its all good in theory but I would like to see you in action with the keyboard.
Should we try a match online with kawaks or something? I'm not the greatest player but I would like to see your "keyboard" in action.
or better yet, show us a video of you playing sf with keyboard.

I never said it was easier to use a keyboard than joystick... although i do prefer keyboard to game pad. I HATE gamepads. It a lot easier to do a 360 on a game pad though. I just want a joystick..

it,s a fast fluid down>left/right>punch/kick that does the trick. Timing is critical. It is harder than a joystick obviously, but once you get the feel for it, it isn't so bad.

I've never really played sf seriously on an arcade stick, but it would seem to me that there shouldn't be much of a difference right? They're both analog sticks, and in fact the ps2/ps3 analog should be better because of the shorter throw distance? Am I missing something here?
Yeah, they are digital sticks, you don't want analog for the most part. For a game like SF anything more then 8 way digital stick tends to make it harder to pull off moves smoothly. Really, a 4 way can make it easier IME then even an 8 way, analog sticks are too sensitive/accurate- I don't really want to worry about being 1mm off when I start a sequence and have it fail/lost a match because I was using analog instead of digital. Don't get me wrong, I've been running Razer mice for years now- I like the utmost precission whenever it is useful, but it ends up hurting more then helping in this particular game.
The main reason im psyched for sf4 is that pretty much all reviews say if you used to play it you will be able to jump in and do decently until you come to grips with the new techniques.
This is true up to a point, certain characters play mechanics have changed rather heavily, namely Chun Li and Vega who used to be my top two choices(they are WAY slower then they were, Fei Long and Cammy now are the faster characters, but completely different move set then what I'm used to).

That's too bad. It's nice that Fei Long and Cammy are faster now, though I like Chun Li and Vega to be fast too.
Is there a way to use the SF4 fightstick with the PC? I assume I'd need to get a ps3 or xbox converter to usb? Wondering if I could pick it up early and just use it for mame for a while. Does it work well with mame?
No. Hardly any 3D games work on mame.
I wasn't referring to playing SF4 on mame. Actually interested in playing the old SF2 series on it. Just don't know how well the SF4 fightstick would work on mame with it.

ITS really easy, don't let go of the down before you press right. I suppose this concept was intuitive to me from playing piano. so, yea it's how you visualize.
SF3 3rd strike is hard because of the double quarter circle fowards + punch supers. Keyboard makes this seamless.
YES there is a CPS3 emulator, NO it doesn't work with MVC2

Played mame online (kaillera) with MustangSVT yesterday. It was awesome! He kicked my ass most of the time though. Mostly lag free.
The only bad thing is that now that I've finally got a chance to try it out, the SF4 fightstick seems to be out of stock in most places. GameStop doesn't even seem to stock the SE and they don't know when the TE would be back in stock.
