Strangeness overclocking my Duron 700...

Hey all,

I got my Alpha PAL 6035 today, so I put my arctic silver on, pencil-unlocked my processor, and started overclocking. 800..fine. 900...fine. 950...fine. NO PROBLEMS.

1000...fine...EXCEPT...it SHOWS the processor running at 900. Then when I go intot the BIOS, it is shown as a multiplier of 10. SO, I save it again with a 10 multiplier... "AMD Duron @ 900 (9x100 MHz). So I check it agian in the BIOS, and it is still set at 10. So, I set it to 10.5, and the startup shows it at 950 MHz. So, what the dilly-yo? It doesn't make any sense. Is there a revision of the BIOS that doesn't show the correct processor speed?

Any help would rock.

Benchmark it and compare the diffrent settings. Congrats on your chip btw.

Great chip...

What program did you use that showed it at 900 and 950 instead of 100MHz greater than that? What motherboard? KT7 i presume from the bios overclocking...

Maybe try the AMD Utility that tells you the speed...I think there is such a thing. :p I'm pretty sure there is...check amd.com.

Thank you for congratulating me...

I thought about benchmarking....but I don't want to install any stuff on there I don't need, and though I know I could benchmark with Photoshop and rendering test and things liek that, I don't want my BIOS to show a different speed than the CPU is actually running. --It's just a matter of pride, you know? :)

Also, I was wondering this: By the mere fact that I CAN change the speed AT ALL, we can know for sure that I HAVE fully and successfully unlocked the CPU, right? Like, there's no chance that it is "not unlocked enough" to run at 1 GHz, right? It was my understanding that it's either LOCKED or UNLOCKED. --No in-between. Right?

Oh...I almost forgot.... You know when I set it to 10, it posts at 900, and when I set it to 10.5, it posts at 950, right? Well, when I set it to 11, it doesn't post at all, and then reverts back down to automatic.

Thanks,

Ricky

Just the BIOS at POST.

I will when I get back home, unless someone can help me out before then....
And yes, I thought I had mentioned it...it is a KT7 RAID.

Still haven't made any progress in figuring this out....

But I do know this: My 700 is ROCK SOLID STABLE at 950 MHz at only 1.675V!!! Hehehehe. :)

Man, that's cool. I have had GOOD luck with OC'ing. My two celeron 366's run solid stable at 550 on DEFAULT voltage.

So, anyone know about this not reporting the speed thing?

***UPDATE***

I just DLed and ran WCPUID. Same thing. When I have the multiplier set to 10, I get 900 at post, and 900 in CPUID. WTF? It's making me kinda ill, because, like I mentioned in the above post, I am getting 950 at a pretty low voltage! .25 volts over default is PRETTY GOOD for a 250 MHz overclock! Now, if I could just MAKE IT go to 1 GHz.

I had a thought....There is an option in the BIOS in Softmenu III that says "Speed Error Hold" It was disabled, and I thought maybe if it were enabled, I wouldn't be getting past POST at all....and it was setting the CPU down to a speed that it COULD run at instead of "holding". SO, I turned it on, and it didn't affect it. --ANd I found out anyway that that's nto really what that does.

I WOULD say I give up, but I don't WANT TO give up!! I want 1 GHz!! I certainly didn't pay $50.00 for this heatsink and a tube of arctic siler just to stop at 950 @ 1.675V!!

:(:( Please helap if you can.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, but I find it humorous that you paid ~$100 for a CPU, then $50 for cooling it. :) For that $150 you could have gotten a Tbird 750 and gone to 950 or 1GHz. Don't mind me, I'm just playing the devil's advocate. ;)

Check abit's web site for a new bios...maybe?

Well, firstly, I didn't pay $50.00 to cool this CPU. I paid 30 plus a tube of arctic silver to cool SEVERAL CPU's. --And had I gotten a TBird 750, I would have gotten the SAME EXACT heatsink and grease, so it would have cost me $50.00 more for no more speed, as you can see from the fact that I am running at 950 right now.

See?

So, anyway...I didn't want to flash my BIOS, as this is the only thing wrong at the moment. Maybe I will though.....

Anyone else?

Your problem sounds very much like your pencil job is not good on one of the L1 bridges. I'd invest about $7 in the Loctite rear window defogger repair kit available at Autoshops. You get a small bottle of highly conductive fluid and a little brush. Ya gotta cut the brush a bit and the stuff dries pretty fast but when its complete the connections are way better than graphite.

I think I agree. Its possible that, if the connection on one of the L1 bridges is not good enough, its causing your problem -- if you go find a diagram of what each bridge is responsible for, you might even be led to which one.

I AM NOW POSTING THIS FROM MY DURON 700@1000!!! WOOHOOOO!!!!!!!:):):):):)

Thanks again. Check the main threads list for a topic about this specifically.

That's awesome dude. I can't wait to get a Duron or Tbird. :) Congrats on the success. BTW- What week is your Duron?

*drools at the thought of upgrading my K6-3/450 to 1GHz...*

It's a 700@1000 .. and, in order to overclock, if your L1 bridges are broken, you have to reconnect them somehow. A pencil works great, and is about as cheap as you can get. ;)
