I didn't notice that until I accidently saw my receipt two minutes ago. I paid by Visa card and they charged $0.60 "deposit" on that 12-pack. Am I supposed to return the empty cans to get the deposit back? That's stupid. Next time I will buy from a food mart to see if they charge that also.

If you are in a state that has deposits, you get charged for it.

What the hell rock have you been under? Read the top of your can.

12 * $0.05 = $0.60

you are in new york, they have had a can deposit/return thingy for many years

did you just move there?

most grocery stores have these machines that you feed your empty cans/bottles into and it gives you a receipt that you can then redeem in the store for goods/cash

missouri doesn't do it and i don't miss it. i throw my cans/bottles into the trash/landfills with glee and rejoycing that i don't have to haul stinky dripping bottles/cans to the store to get my $0.05 extortion fee back

Watch the Seinfeld episode. The one about importing cans to another state with high deposit.

it is to promote recycling. you have to hit the machines that eat them and give you your money back.

But we recycle cans by putting them in the plastic bags and waiting for the weekly collection day.

Are you joking or serious? Is it possible to take cans into a state with a high deposit and collect cash?

My problem with deposit fee is that I never get back what I put in when I go redeem my deposit. One place will give me 78c/lb for cans. 24 cans is one pound. I pay 4 cents deposit each. That is 96 cents. 96-78 = 18 cents of difference. Of course no one takes all the time and effort to recycle just a pound, I usually go with 15-20 lbs. That's like losing $3 every trip.
