I dont think I know what you're getting at.
I can strafe and jump just fine in Doom 3. Is there some special DeathMatch technique that I dont know about?

More info please.

Yea, there is.....They also call it bunnie hopping i think. Your able to move very very fast going forward taking huge leaps. Its called strafe jumping. Not just standard strafing and jumping. This is some sort of combination. Like I said tho....you can jump really far with it, and move forward really really fast

Generally, it's done with scripts in most games because of the timing required

Are you talking about the strafing at an angle while jumping? Most bunny hopping is just getting the angle part down so you are moving in the direction you want to go. Minimizing the time spent on the ground (IE the bunny hopping), and the time spent readjusting to each side per jump.

If you need scripts to bunny hop, rocket jump, or anything else you have problems. I called the BS flag on a "Pro" clan using scripted grenade jumps back in Q3. I got a lot of flak because it was just for grenade jumping and it was so trival. Then I brought up the fact that if it was so trival why would one use it. Things got a bit quit after that.

Though the defense against bunny hopping, is that it's hard to make sharpt turns without losing all that speed or stopping entirely. I played Q3: WFA and they had the offhand grapple that eliminated that entirely. You could grapple jump and being going nearly max speed right away, and grapple at any angle to change your direction quickly.

Edit: Also at least for Q3 they had timedemo maps that required you to do the "special" moves like bunny hop to get enough speed over a jump, combination rocket jumps, wall climb with the plasma and so on. So you might want to check to see if any are available for D3. You should be able to pick up some pro timedemos for the levels to see how they look, if they have those type of maps out.

No, its not jumping at angles....Its jumping in straight lines forward. Just like walking in a straight line, but each jump you take would consist of about 50 feet. I understand the rocket jumps...

Strafejumping is one of those things that's also done tons in Half-Life 2 Deathmath. I used to play it and I know quite a few top-notch STA-League players. I would imagine the same methods would be used in D3 as these same methods were used for Q4.

EDIT: Saw TGS pretty much got it down. Nevertheless, check out this, should be adaptable for D3 as well. GL.

That's exactly the result of strafe jumping... You angle your character slightly while jumping. You get the combined speed increase of the strafe movement and your normal forward motion. As long as you aren't on the ground long enough to slow to just your forward speed, you can continue to pick up speed in the air with strafe jumping until you reach the games max speed for objects in the air. IE the fastest speed while falling.

From the observers perspective the person is jumping forward extremely fast. From behind the screen you are doing small angling motions when you strafe. Typically you will be angling to the "inside" of your movement path. IE, you start jumping and first you strafe to the left. Normally you would start to move at a 45 degree angle. So you jump in the air while doing this and turn to the right enough to keep on a "straight" path. When you hit the ground you do the opposite. You strafe right and angle in left.

Movements sequence:

jump
> (strafe) \ (mouse)
jump
< (strafe) / (mouse)

etc

Edit: It's really just mastering the nudge with the mouse so you get the most speed boost from the strafe. Some people in Q3 were really good and could get max speed in 2-3 hops. I could do it around 4-5 hops, but I was handicapped by being a Weapons Factory grapple monkey. Doing a grapple jump, could max your speed easily in any direction. Then you add in doing a rocket jump instead of jumping and you could fly across a map. Then add in a mid-air rocket jump off of your decoy and you could be in the air for a *long* time. :)

Sigh I miss WFA...

That there is exactly what I was referring too.....it does look extremely fast when I follow them in a tournament. I thought it was that fast from their perspective also....hmmm....thanks for that link cirrhosis...It helped me alot...just got to master it now....

NP.

GL with it, it takes tons of practice, more than I was willing to put in. You'll reap the bounty if you keep it up.

Have fun!

Quake 3 - "Defrag" mod is fun (jump mod)

Good practice for any game. I loved completing those. It feels good to get so much acceleration.

I've only ever heard of rocket-jump scripts, not strafe ones. Technically impossible in Quake 3 I'm pretty sure, but maybe possible in Doom 3.

In certain mods, jump physics are determined by airborne mouse movement like in Challenge Promode Arena (Q3 mod). Timing your jumping steps is important. Make the end of your player hit the edge just barely if you're jumping "over" something.

Just to generally strafe, all you have to do is hold down your forward key, and the side direction you want to go in both at the same time. Then press the jump key at an interval defined by just before the point at which your player hits the floor. Backward strafing is also possible. You should be able to do this without any lapses between jumps. Just keep going, and you'll gain acceleration in terms of game units and you can jump farther the longer you have been going.
