Go to the hardware or HD, Lowe's, whatever and tell them what you've got going on. Take a pic too. They'll have you fixed up and you'll have it finished in one trip.

That's what I had to do for my bathroom, bad as it may seem. I'm no plumber and the house we bought, a foreclosure, had had most of the plumbing fixtures ripped out, among other "small" items. Had to replace four sinks in the house and being overly cheap, did them myself.

The first was intimidating and had to do the "take pics of what you have" route when buying a sink and plumbing at Lowe's. They fixed me up so I completed the install in one go. After that, the rest were "simple".

Very nice work. Wish mine was as good. But it works. :)

The damn nut was stripped. New nut went on without any problem. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well now I got another problem. The drain is leaking. One question I have is if I should tighten the stainer/basket very tight where it seems most of the plumber's putty squeezes out?

Yah...the putty is only there to catch any irregularities in the casting...

I've done this. Go to the car and get your jack. Jack up the P trap and line up what your trying to connect. Tighten the plastic nut thingy. Profit.

Where is the trap? I don't see a trap.

It's like a compression thing....as long as you tighten it up and it never loosens, water shouldn't be able to leak.

The putty will eventually harden up a little, but the main point is that it fills the void...whatever void is there between the drain piece and the sink.

Yes in the sink.

Pics

Look like the tailpiece isn't lineup. Try lining it up and push at the same time to see if you can fit it in. Or, disconnect the other other sink connection and hook this one up first then hook the other one back.

Worst case is to replace the horizontal arm and tail piece to fit.

Ditch that extra washer (the one in the long-nose pliers) it is redundant with the tailpiece you are using. You should now have enough threads to tighten the connection.
I think the washer is needed there because it is made of softer material to make a better seal than hard PVC flange.
