Redo your calculations and figure this into the equation, entering an intersection after the light has turned yellow is the same violation as if it were red.

no way. if i'm one foot away from the intersection travelling at 40mph, and it turns yellow, I didn't do anything wrong.

Anyway, the calculations were just for fun anyway and completely inaccurate because we don't know exactly how the sensors work or the exact distances.

right. the camera is 350 ft away, but maybe it can detect cars 100 ft away from that, or even more. (how far do police radar/lasers work?)

Oh man, what a joke. If I lived in that town, that might cause me to lose all regard for red lights. It certainly wouldn't stop me. The only thing that would ever stop me from speeding is if they took my car away.

I would rather they just give tickets than doing this kind of stupid thing.
Why didn't they just put a camera and capture the speeders instead?

Well, it is close to SF, so maybe one day while I am driving around I may pass there. who knows?

Actually, I think this could be a good idea.

If everyone knows, "I'll get where I'm going faster if I don't speed," then speeding will end.

Yeah. I'm sure that's what will happen.

But if you want to look for a silver lining, tire dealerships and body shops are going to love this.

You ever driven a street where the lights were properly timed?

Drivers in such areas quickly learn to go the speed limit and no faster, since going faster means they're going to be stopped at a red light.

I don't see why the same wouldn't work here. And I certainly don't anticipate the gloom and doom results that others are predicting.

BTW, not all street lights are timed. Some lights stay green only when there's traffic passing under... as soon as that last car approaches through, the light turns red... and it sucks... cause I'm trying to catch that last car from a distance. Most left-turn lanes have a turn signal like this... but there's one of these regular lights at a big intersection around here for traffic going straight through. I do 60 in a 40 to try and make it through... it's a hazard... if I knew that going 40 would keep the light green, I would choose to do it in a heartbeat.

The funny thing is, that's the first thing I did when I read the article. I was assuming a 4 second yellow, so I figure ~75 mph would let you easily make it. :) Can't wait till the drivers on the road figure it out!!!

People don't speed because they want to get somewhere. They speed because they like moving fast. Just like some people like to walk down hallways fast. And how some people enjoy riding a bike faster than others. It is pure enjoyment. This will just turn it into a large game of beat the lights.

This is going to cause mass traffic jams. Lights are timed and synchronized for a reason. If you throw that off for every idiot who speeds, you'll cause a logjam.

Awesome! Now there will be all sort of innocent drivers getting nailed by speeders! Smart thinking dumbasses!

I swear. People are going to start running lights left and right in that town.

That town will become to stoplights what Saint Louis is to stop signs.

LOL. Yeah St.Louis SuX0rs big time wrt stop signs. 3-way stop signs are bad enough. ever see a 2 way stop sign? we got em here. stupid.

I'd just go faster just to beat the red

Wrong, from an officer who pulled me over when I was a teen, you need to clear the intersection by the time it turns red.

Dude, WTF are you talking about? You don't get a ticket for entering the intersection with a yellow light. If that was the case, why not just go from green to red? Like Nitemare said, you have to clear the intersection before it turns red.
