Actually, I think this could be a good idea.

If everyone knows, "I'll get where I'm going faster if I don't speed," then speeding will end.
NogginBoink - Clue, Clue - Nogginboink.

Get to know each other...

You ever driven a street where the lights were properly timed?

Drivers in such areas quickly learn to go the speed limit and no faster, since going faster means they're going to be stopped at a red light.

I don't see why the same wouldn't work here. And I certainly don't anticipate the gloom and doom results that others are predicting.

People don't speed because they want to get somewhere. They speed because they like moving fast. Just like some people like to walk down hallways fast. And how some people enjoy riding a bike faster than others. It is pure enjoyment. This will just turn it into a large game of beat the lights.

I speed to get places fast. I also walk fast to get places fast. Why waste time walking when I can go faster?

Actually I agree with NogginBoink ... I'm surprised there are so many people in here that think this is a bad idea ... it seems that this law would take away some of the incentive for people who speed.

For instance, if you go down a stretch of road where the lights are timed ... you'll sorta know that if you don't catch the green at point A, you'll hit reds on the next couple of lights, so you speed up to catch the green at point A. But if you know that if you speed up, the light will change, there's no point in speeding up to catch the green since this is essentially making it impossible to catch any greens by speeding up.

Exactly. Its bad enough that one guy from out of town has to cut me off because he was in the wrong lane to get onto the interstate...I don't need him fvcking all the lights up too.

Um, so then what happens if this works and everyone goes under the speed limit? These lights stay green forever and no one else can get on the road? The lights would have to have a standard trigger system in addition to this to work and that blows your whole theory out of the water because they're still going to just turn red on you anyway.

One good thing though, is I'd be able to get my "red light dumps" on demand just by hitting the accelerator.

(Red light dumps are when a guy pisses me off, or is tailgating me...I slow down at a yellow light like I'm going to stop and then just gun it right through it. He is forced to stop, unless he's even crazier than I am. )

Woulda been cool if you had explained your response instead of being a retard. But eh, ok maybe I'll explain mine instead. I could go out driving without having ANY destination in mind and speed. I like the wind, I like to be going fast. I know many people who also like this. Especially any person who buys a sports car. I don't know anyone who bought a sports car so they could get to work faster.

Redo your calculations and figure this into the equation, entering an intersection after the light has turned yellow is the same violation as if it were red.
Dude, WTF are you talking about? You don't get a ticket for entering the intersection with a yellow light. If that was the case, why not just go from green to red? Like Nitemare said, you have to clear the intersection before it turns red.

yes. but remember kiddies when it's a yellow you cant "GUN" it because technically you are suppose to be SLOWING down. so when a cop stops you for being under the light weather its red/yellow youre pretty much screwed because he can say that you were speeding up / not slowing down for the yellow...

What do you mean what happens .... the light will not stay green forever because you have cross traffic. Plus even when lights are timed, they stay on a specific light for only a set amount of time then it has to change. There is no way it will stay green forever ...

just saw a newscast about this on the local news. They interviewed some old guy on a harley who just flew through the light at 60mph and it didn't change red. The traffic engineer in Pleasanton said that was by design. The "blatant" speeders are allowed to keep the green because they said it was dangerous for them to suddenly stop, and they were trying to keep cross traffic out of the way of the speeder.

Seems like an even bigger waste of time now..

I need that on my street, I'm on a side street where people feel the need to race from stop to stop.

Actually I'm thinking about just going out at 4am with a bag of quickcrete and making a speedbump ;)

Damn there is a lot of people here worried about losing their ability to break the law.

but you know what they will get I bet..... people will get into the intersection and then floor it on purpose and leave the others in the dust LOL... nice try but they better just go with photo radar

You can't speed when you're dead. :D
