maladroit: Sorry, Moons, no bullshitting your way out of this one. You were being hypocritical. And enough with this "mirror" nonsense, ok? You're a glorified troll, and what you call self-confidence, I call self-absorbtion.

OK I know a Long Pig is what Pacific Island Cannibals called humans they ate but you will have to explain the "Black Angus" comment.

anyways, back to boycotting those two damned countries!

Yes, you are right! Please read the post above for a fuller understanding. I'm saying that some people are posting insults and calling them arguements. I just wanted to see if people could behave in a more polite way towards each other - even when they disagree. I do all the time.

Andy

First off, i take being called a racist, and discriminator as a definite insult. I'm sure you've figured that out by now, i've seen alot of posts about it (3 pages) but yet u haven't changed your first post. I suggest ya do that...

Next, I think you have seen that we aren't gonna change. So my suggestion is
1) Find a new board
2) Deal with it (skip those posts, ignore them, whatever...)
3) Learn to lightin up some. If this is a big prob in your life, be glad, heh.

I've come to expect obstructionist crap from China & Russia, but our "European allies" should be ashamed. You're obviously not supportive of military involvement in Iraq, woo hoo... Because it offends you, evidently I'm not allowed to voice my opinion? The EU can't even agree on what symbols to put on the Euro without a 5 year long freaking discussion, name calling & back-stabbing. Bite me & guess what? We're probably going to kick some Iraqi ass whether France or Germany likes it or not. Oh BTW, I believe this board is operated in the US & it's private property, I respectfully suggest you boycot this forum & not buy anymore products from it's parent company, I believe Tom's Hardware "Other" Forum may meet your immediate needs. (watch out for Tom's silk PJ's & veiled homoerotic innuendos). Have a good day sir, (lunatic hugs his guns, wraps himself in a right wing flag waits to be banned)😀 BTW, ever since my ex wife moved to Cheltenham & started dodging paying child support, the UK is on my list too...

Well, that explains a lot! I wondered why Anand never posted to these boards, and it turns out he did, and he was just calling himself Pliablemoose! Well, since this is your privately owned board, then you can tell people to do what you like...

And let me remind you that the US is supposed to be the "land of the free" based on tenets of equality and free speech. Not an authoritarian dictatorship where you can agree with Pliablemoose or be deported.

< sighs >
What he said is that, if he doesn't like what he sees maybe he should leave. I suppose he (fencer) could complain about it, but that would kinda contradict his purpose. Funny how you can use sarcasm, but you can't read others dpm...

Hehe, maladriot. Corn is all ear. Get it. Just becasue I post stuff so profound ( 😉 ) it goes over your head, doesn't mean I can't be corny.

I would like to know if people agree that arguements should be kept civil and that this kind of "bashing" should stop. It doesn't prove anybody's point.

I would also be interested to hear the opinions (I have had to edit here to say "opinions" not "insults") of any one (French or German in particular) about how they feel towards these forums, and if that has changed of late.
You are wasting your time, F128. Hopefully the regression of this thread has made that clear to you once and for all.

ATOT is frequented by all sorts of people, so naturally that includes the ignorant, the unintelligent, and the inexperienced. Some posters have led very sheltered lives, others are adolescents who really have not yet lived at all, and still others have been brainwashed into close-mindedness. Now factor in the way the Internet emboldens its users by giving them the opportunity to make outrageous statements anonymously (without having to actually look their target audience in the eye). It seems that in the absence of heavy moderation the deterioration of *every* OT forum is inevitable.

It has been my experience that you cannot convince some people to change their ways. If and when they are ready to calm down they will do so of their own accord. So my advice to you is:

(i) Either ignore threads on volatile issues, or briefly check each one to see if it has degenerated into a flame-fest yet, and if the coast is clear then participate in the discussion only until things start heading south. This will save you many unnecessary headaches.

(ii) Do not waste your time telling people to change ____________ about themselves. I know it is difficult (I have trouble restraining myself at times), but in that way you can avoid pissing away countless hours of your life on a futile cause.

(iii) Embrace apathy. So what if some people on this forum are boorish clods? Their personal disposition is none of your business and has no direct effect on you anyway. Your best course of action is to set an example by behaving civilly yourself (playing the race card was a bad start, BTW). As usual, actions will speak louder than words.

(iv) If ATOT is too primitive for your tastes then move elsewhere. If dealing with different kinds of people troubles you, then find a place where everyone is the same. I am quite certain you could find a small, sedate, exclusivist forum where the mods only admit those they deem worthy. In that insulated environment, surrounded by your peers, you would be free to debate issues politely with no fear of intrusion by the unwashed masses.

(v) And finally, do not look for support from Frenchmen, Germans, or members of any other nationality, because the stereotyping that is so prevalent here is equally popular on foreign forums. Indeed, there are plenty of foreign posters here on ATOT who routinely bash Americans, yet you apparently welcome and value their support, even going so far as to request it specifically. Are you aware of that bias?

Classy, if it weren't for insults, you and I would have nothing to say to each other. 😉

To insult you I have to find you underground. Deep deep underground. 😀 But this board is probably 95% white and 80% republican. And because of those 2 factors there is no way in hell there could possibly be any meaningful discussion when race, creed, or nationality is involved. No offense.

I'm pretty sure the % of Asians on this board is slightly higher than %5.

And as for the statement that this board is 80% Republican, you have your opinion, I have mine, and opinions are like... I'm sure you know the rest.

I think that of late some of the posts round here have been racist towards some countries/members of other countries (France and Germany spring to mind). I would like to know if people agree that arguements should be kept civil and that this kind of "bashing" should stop. It doesn't prove anybody's point.

It's been pointed out a million times already that your use of "racism" is incorrect, but I wholeheartedly agree on your call to "civility". Unfortunetly, some people don't have the self-control to do this and due to the structure of ATOT it is next to impossible to get a "civil" discussion on sensitive issues here.

If you really want "civil" discussion on such topics, the Soap Box at Ars Technica comes pretty close. There the mods step in and try to keep topics ontrack and they will lock/ban those who don't contribute to the discussion at hand. Unfortunetly(why I don't post there anymore 🙁 ), you have to have a Subscription.

This is just my observation anyway.

perhaps thats why we have this mess here

I swear I love you guys 😀. Okay now lets be honest for a minute here. This board is dominated by whites and republicans overwhelmingly. I didn't call anyone racist or anything. But because of these two factors it would extremely hard to have a discussion about race, creed, or nationality because the dominate view here would be skewed. Case in point. If someone lived in a cave all their life and only logged in here to OT forums here at Anandtech they would come away with a very negative slanted view on blacks and rap music. Almost every conversation about blacks and rap music is usually negative. I could same the same about being democrat. Many if not all these coversations more often than not only present one side the arguement seen through predominately the same kinds of eyes. Its like a person going to an Italian resteraunt to learn how to cook soul food. He may learn about cooking soul food there, but it will definately have a slant to it. Thats all I'm saying. Some of yall need to chill. 🙂

Actually classy, it is quite balanced. I read a couple other forums, one is far right, one is far left. This forum is very close to the middle.

Spelling "intelligent" correctly would be a good start
