Hi,

I think that of late some of the posts round here have been racist towards some countries/members of other countries (France and Germany spring to mind). I would like to know if people agree that arguements should be kept civil and that this kind of "bashing" should stop. It doesn't prove anybody's point.

I would also be interested to hear the opinions (I have had to edit here to say "opinions" not "insults") of any one (French or German in particular) about how they feel towards these forums, and if that has changed of late.

Thanks,

Andy

It's been pointed out a million times already that your use of "racism" is incorrect, but I wholeheartedly agree on your call to "civility". Unfortunetly, some people don't have the self-control to do this and due to the structure of ATOT it is next to impossible to get a "civil" discussion on sensitive issues here.

If you really want "civil" discussion on such topics, the Soap Box at Ars Technica comes pretty close. There the mods step in and try to keep topics ontrack and they will lock/ban those who don't contribute to the discussion at hand. Unfortunetly(why I don't post there anymore 🙁 ), you have to have a Subscription.
wish the AT mods would try that for a month or so, I bet you would see ALOT of difference and alot of members banned 😛

Speech is not nearly as free on Ars Technica soap box. The mods here are much more restained.
This is just my observation anyway.
perhaps thats why we have this mess here

Why am I not surprised you think free speech is a mess.
see, this is exactly what I'm talking about, its IMPOSSIBLE to have an intelegent discussion on this board
So Charrison should be banned for saying that?

I've never shouted obscenties at the opposition.

Yes you have Tominator, countless times.

Liberals think that if you repeat something enough times it becomes fact.

I seem to recall hearing that from you a few times, so I'd say ditto to you.

if this forum had a set of rules for debates and if charrison broke those rules then yes, but thats only if, I'm not going further than that

Only if Czar is banned for "intelegent"

Well I doubt that's going to happen. Hey if it gets to much for you to deal with here, head on out to Arstechnica!

Yes, absolutely. And while you're at it you can go ahead and pre-emptively ban everyone who might make czar, or the original poster, feel slightly uncomfortable.

its not a question about being able to deal with it or not its a question about gaining something from debates, a flamewar is just a flamewar and we have way too many of those here

I don't go through my day to day life full of self loathing nor do I know many, there are a few, people who do.

The point was, you do and you don't realize it.

I just think there is not enough diversity here to have in depth conversations when it comes to race and stuff like that. I think we need AA here. 🙂

Do you ever make a post, or even have a thought, that doesn't have anything to do with race? Just curious.

Race is a big issue here. And I talk about a lot fo stuff. Most of the stuff here about race is often negative. I have yet to see a thread that didn't have dozens of knuckleheads, like you, slinging the same ole typical stereotypes. Then knucklehaeds like you get upset when I say its different than the garbage that is usually spewed here. I do and will always talk about other stuff, but I'll be damned if I'm just going to sit here and read all the freaking cross burning and not say nothing.

Speech perhaps, but Discussion is emphasized. Free speech has it's limitations, especially the "speech" that many resort to. Stroking of one's ego or the attempted destruction of another's is not what the Author's of the Bill of Rights had in mind when they gauranteed Freedom of Speech, they were thinking about "discussion" of ideas in order to benefit society as a whole.

Oh cry me a river you big baby. Waaaaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaa....someone said something I don't like. Waaaaaa Waaaaaa......Take it to the Queen and see if she cares. Here in the good old U.S. of A. we have this thing called freedom of speech and can say what we want. Of course there are some here that want to limit that speech, but they are either a bunch of flag burning hippies or hypocrites that wrap themselves in the flag and then ignore what the Bill of Rights.

Words can only hurt if you let them. Grow a pair and get over it.

Why don't you and all of the rest of your kind cry me a river when everyone who doesn't agree with Srub don't jump when you say jump? oh, you actually do that... how nice...

Because that is what you do, you don't join the armed forces to actually do something, you like to push war in the comfort of your own home, now don't you? The people who get killed? "people get killed in wars, that is the way it goes" simple, isn't it? fvcking easy, isn't it...

Morons, all of you, this is a great joy for all of you fvkckheads isn't it, people are going to die for your fvcking enjoyment, happpy happy joy joy...

Yes, THAT will make america safe, NOBODY will be pissed off about THAT... noooooo way...

Last time (GWII) the allied rebuilt the majority, this time... well, as the US has decided that the US will install a new american government, i assume that the people of Irak will recieve the same benefits that the people of the US? oh.. no? you just wanted to invade, not to help? yeah, as usual...

Well like I've said I don't know how many times before, everybody has an opinion and is sticking to it. This is what the Zen master could call having a full tea cup. Since in order to acquire real knowledge or deeper wisdom, one has to have an empty cup to pour into, there isn't any hope that through argument alone that you will be able to show anybody anything new. They need an empty cup first. That leaves only indirect routes available. Since not much can happen for anybody who isn't fundamentally serious anyway, either profoundly curious about truth or desparately longing for it out of pain, it's all pretty accidemic anyway, but there is that possibility, in my opinion, that unlearing or emptying ones cup, can happen or begin to happen by friction with and examination of ones underlying unanalysized assumptions as they rub against somebody who doesn't share them. People who are stuffed full like a turkey start to leak around people who are relatively less stuffed and somethimes they can begin to see it especially when, over time, they begin to develope some sense of humor about themselves and some sense ultimately that leaking stuffing isn't fatal and actually feels pretty good, or in other ways has its compensation. The less seriously, ego wise, we can take ourselves, the less seriously we will need the crutches we thought we did.

Everybody desparately wants life to be this or that. If only people were polite, if only a million things. You cannot get anything by demands. You can only give. There is only love.

It's likely YOU, and not those around you, who makes your whole life about race.

If you are lumping me in the 'freaking cross burning knuckleheads' category is that not the 'same ole typical stereotype'?
Are stereotypes okay as long as they aren't directed towards the 'group' you 'belong' to?

IMHO, the explicit right of free speech only works if it protects even the most offensive and vile among us AS WELL AS everyone else.

You know you always got a lot to say to me. But its amazing I never see your punk a$$ ever say anything to anyone who posts negative racial stuff. But the minute I say something in response to the garbage, you come along and label me whatever. Go crawl under a rock dirtbag. How's that obsession for you?

Maybe you personally insulted him when you posted that diatribe about homosexuals a while back.

You know, I tried very, very hard to give a flipping sh!t about anything in this thread, but..well...I'll be damned if I still don't.

classy this board is more than likely almost majority asian. I don't know what rock you are hiding under, but as usual you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

This board seems moderate if not a little left of center to me. I am a moderate so it fits in rather well for me. The one thing that does not fit in with me, is you playing the race card in every post and threatening those who disagree with you.
