You're of chinese descent, right? If you need help staying regular, you should try drinking a shit-ton of black tea. About half an hour to an hour after I drink two cups of highly oxidized tea I can feel the slight laxative effects. It's not too powerful, but it helps if my GI tract is out of sorts.

Yeah 1/2 Chinese. I like Chinese tea! But tea contains a fair amount of caffeine, which is a diuretic. You're trying to maintain water there.

If time comes for some washroom 1812 events a sitz bowl affitted with a small-ish plimsoll aerator can help out. Just don't overspeed the blower or it may get messy. (think about those pictures of the mixer coming out of the bowl of pudding with their paddles going wide open throttle!)

Just try doing what I do and eat a medium-sized salad at the end of each meal; and plenty of water regardless of your chosen fiber source. So many people forget the latter fact and then bitch about how constipated their fiber source made them. Fiber absorbs water, which makes it soft and easy to pass. No water + fiber = hard, constipated shits that produce hemorrhoids.

I know a couple people who have a range of GI issues. Thankfully I've never been told details as I don't need that info of friends in my head, but I can tell you that every single one of them has made mention of adopting a daily intake of large amounts of Metamucil in water. They talk about it in revered tones like it saved them from a bear attack or something, maybe OP should check it out?

Water and soluble fiber can do miracles apparently. You should check it out Locut0s, hope you bounce back soon. That doesn't sound like fun at all. ;)

But caffeine is also a stimulant, and one thing it stimulates is the bowels. Tea is also mostly water. Not saying it's hydrating, but as fair as diuretics go it's relatively mild in terms of its dehydrating effect.

I've been drinking a bunch of fucking tea today, since I just got home from holiday travelling last night. I'm onto my second infusion of Big Red Robe, a highly oxidized chinese oolong. It's almost a black tea. This is after a cup of black and a few infusions of green/white/oolong blend. I'm now drinking water to balance out the caffeine, and cool water now tastes sweet after all the delicious chinese tea I've been having.

I'm going to take a shit after this post and I expect it to be a good one. This isn't always the case the day after a bunch of travelling and poor sleep the night before.

As irishScott has said, I think it's more the caffeine stimulating the bowels than its diuretic effect.

I left out the 'details' in the OP, and won't post any after the fact. You don't post any about your's, deal? :p

We have tons and tons and tons of Chinese tea here at home actually. Most of it is years and years old though. Years and years of tea being given to us as gifts from Chinese and Taiwanese friends :p

Thanks. Yeah I definitely need to look into adding more fibre to my diet. Mostly in the form of vegetables and fruit. I should be getting enough grains and cereals.

Sounds like you might need more fiber from bran, like All-Bran cereal.

Also some medications will dry you out.

Need to see if I can get used to Soymilk. My mother loves the stuff. And I mean the unsweetened non milk tasting Chinese soymilk. Personally I never really warmed to the stuff. I have no problem eating cereal and All-Bran (tasty stuff) but I'm a bit lactose intolerant. Can still eat cereal with real milk but it upsets my stomach about 30 or 40% of the time it seems. All-Bran can be eaten straight from the box too, actually quite good that way. :hmm:

Yeah I can't deal with milk either, I eat the cereal dry with a glass of water. My point is that if you start measuring your daily fiber intake in grams, it seems like you can eat fruit and vegetables all day and it's just not as much as a bowl's worth of All-Bran in one sitting.

As long as you keep your caffein intake below 300 mg, you shouldn't have any dehydration. If you start off with 2 cups of black tea, you should be at about 90 mg. Then step down to a cup or two of green or a lighter oolong and you should be at 110 mg for 130. You can then re-infuse that green/oolong for a couple more cups of tea. Thing is, after the first infusion or two, those tea leaves will have much less caffeine. Stay with lighter teas into the evening, and you'll be drinking healthy, tasty tea and stay under the 300 mg ceiling. The tea will also help to regulate your digestion.

I've felt a little dehydrated today because I had 16 ounces of coffee this morning. If I didn't have that, I'd still be under 300 mg. And, since I drank all that nice oolong tea, the water I'm leveling out with tastes wonderful.

Just remember the alternative to healthy bowel habits is often "Manual disimpaction". I have to do one about every few months in the ER. Doesnt hurt me a bit, but I hear its not so pleasant for the patient.
Alternately, the old rectal dynamite we used on the Oncology floor was a 1:1 mix of milk and molases, used as an enema it will break up any clog. (refer to the mixing bowl analogy above)

Fruits and vegetables add bulk / fibre though, and that's important.

Yeah yeah. I've read up on it. Hoping this doesn't turn into that. D: I've never had any real problems before. Diet hasn't been the best obviously. It's clear there were some other factors at play here in the weeks leading up to this.

Oh sure that stuff is great, it just isn't enough for me. I have to eat around 28-30 grams a day, so the cereal helps me get the higher amount without becoming a vegetarian.
