I misspoke, not FrozenCPU's guide to apply thermal paste to direct heat pipe, which is a retailer, I meant check this out: Benchmark Reviews LGA 1366 Cooler Shootout

In addition to putting a bunch of LGA 1366 coolers head to head, it has a link in there somewhere how to apply paste to direct heat pipes (if you go that route). I used Arctic Cooling MX paste to avoid curing times (i was originally using AS5)

I can tonight, i'll post after I do it.

Not sure if using the EVGA E-Leet tool to OC is different to true OCing though (still researching how to BIOS OC properly).

I'll still run it that way tonight and post the results for you.

Khoang, I used the EVGA E-Leet tool to OC my stock to 3.2 ghz and then ran 8 instances of Prime 95 for 1h 15min and monitored my temps w/ Real Temp and Core Temp. Here's what I saw. I had turbo mode off, and my CPU fan set to Max. My ambient temps were around 72 F.

At stock 2.66 idle - C1-38, C2-37, C3-38, C4-34.

At 3.2 idle - C1-37, C2-37, C3-37, C4-32

3.2 full load - C1-58-59, C2-59-60, C3-57-58, C4-54-56

The EVGA tool had the individual core temps about 1 degree lower than Real Temp and Core Temp and showed my Proc Temp at full load to be 45 C.

Thanks for the info Meat. I went to the store today and saw the ThermalRight. HOLY molly, it makes the V1 looks like a joke. I am definitely returning my V1 and get the thermalright.

I check the MB clamp and there was no problem.

I got the thermalright, and voila i am able to do OC at 3.6-3.8GHz. So all the time wasted was due to the V1. One question i have to ask.
Between Core Temp and Asus probe, who should i trust interm of temperature reporting. Core Temp is often 10* higher than my asus probe.

Is the fan thermalright 120 configurable? For me its only running at 1500 rpm which is kind of low.

Glad you were able to solve your problem, and OC in the process.

I don't know what temps to use is better, i'm assuming they are both estimates. I personally would just go on the safe side and use the higher number as my reference.

Whats the approx. RPM range for the cooler fan? In the BIOS i set my fan to max by disabling smart fan and setting it manually to 100%. If smart fan is still on, and your temps aren't greater than 60 degrees, it won't be spinning at full throttle.

Would you recommend other cooler?

Yes, I know the OP doesn't have the HSF anymore, but I have a V1 on my 920. It's OCed to 3.9 and load temps with Linpack are only in the low 70s. Yes, I could get the Noctua or TRUE and get my CPU to 4.1 but I had this HSF from my Q6600. The only problem I had with my V1 was it wasn't enough for my QX6850 OCed anything beyond 3.7GHz.

great idea. though i think my fan runs at its max 1600 by default. The big different between the V1 and this thermalright is i acuatlly feel heat being disperse out. With the V1, i feel cool air :(.

I am not sure what to do. My greedy side is telling me that i should OC at higher speec because in no situation will i be able to saturate all 4 cores like prime95 could. On the other hand, i don't want to blow my chip.

Either way, i am happy with the result.

How about prim95? can you see what your V1 can do? Mine dan't do much. Did you use special TIM or the one that comes with your V1? I notice the thermalright TIM seems higher quality.

When is Arctic Silver Six coming? I tire of reading AS5 as ASS.

I read this post first...

Then read this post second and dam you if I didn't read every AS5 as ASS in that post...and let me tell you it don't paint a pretty picture, no ma'am.

I want to thank the community for providing so much "free" help to overclock the i7 920.
After many hours of fiddling, I got my second build i7 920 to do 3.88ghz comfortably with core temps below 86c.

BUILD

OS: Vista64 Ultimate
Case:Antec300 with side 120mm fan and 1 front 120mm fan installed both spinning
below 1450.

CPU: Core i7 920 (rev:C0/C1 stepping:4)
Motherboard: Asus P6T
Cooler: Scythe Mugen 2
Mem: OCZ3G1600LV6K 6gb PC3-12800+ DDR3-1600 Triple Channel
PSU: PC Power & Cooling S75CF 750W
DVD: NEC ND-3520A
Drive: Seagate WD500gb SATA2 16mb
LCD: 24" Sceptre

BIOS SETTINGS

Bclk: 185
CPU Ratio: Left at auto so 21x can kick-in
Stepping and Turbo: Enabled
CPU Volt: 1.325v
CPU PLL: Auto (1.80v)
QPI Volt: 1.35v
Dram Bus Volt: 1.66 (timing set to 8/8/8/24/1T)

STATS

Prime95 ran 8hrs with no errors. Realtemp core temp max at 86c.

I hope this will help set a base reference for those trying to overclock with Asus P6T.

Best,
Vindaloo

C2Q runs hot as well. Around 75-80c.

The smaller techs are going to continue to run hotter, it is simply more heat to disperse in a smaller package.

quick question which setting do I adjust to get the command rate to run at 1T? I must have it still set to auto as it is running at 2T with timings of 8-8-8-24
