Does the Act, as passed, do anything concerning the spouses of politicians?

Or was Cantor successful in creating a loophole?

Describe the difference between the penalties in both versions. I hear "gutted". OK, what do the politicians get away with in one version that they do not in the other? Did they remove the provision which removes benefits in case of criminal acts?

What we need are enhanced bribery laws in any case and post employment restrictions.

So the group of politicians (Congress) who are corrupt enough to engage in insider trading in the first place are also honorable enough to implement something like this?

It's like them voting to cut their own pay, or implement a ban on accepting bribes from lobbyists (all the same thing): Not bloody likely.

Actually, public pressure does count somewhat - and most of them take a pay cut.

You should worry less about their personal compensation which is peanuts for their positions, and more about the interests they serve corruptly.

As for their own compensation - 372 former members are now lobbyists.

Depends on your own biases. One could say he's a lefty extremist who sat stone ignorant in a church of one the country's worst race baiters and never heard a word. On the other hand he's nothing more than a corporate puppet dancing on a string - the same one the Bush's, the Clinton's, etc did. My own thought is Obama is somewhere in between dwelling the murky waters of that deep pool of political bullshit all politicians live in where no one can see what they really are... good enough? Now, is it normal to here to post a thread and say I agree with the Obama and get labelled a right-wing extremist? LOL, jeez...

One could say that, if one wants to post craziness and get filed next to Obama being a space Alien, Obama being a secret agend of China trying to destroy the US, etc.

'One of the country's worst race baiters' is such a 'crazy level' misrepresentation of who the preacher is - it's the worst hyperbole ever written, for a bit of humorous irony.

Put aside things the people who are prone to such extremes avoid, such as that he was *quoting a Bush official* in his most famous sermon - which is actually pretty defensible.

Dude, you really are the conductor on the crazy train. People can make their own determinations on the good reverend but race healer wouldn't be one of them.

There's nothing between 'one of the worst race baiters in the country' and 'race healer', you claim - though I'd say he's a lot closer to 'race healer'.

Your views are analogous to the ones that say in 1960 'those blacks attacked the segregation laws - they're creating racal tensions and hate!'

I have to disagree. Obama seems to often have gone against the interests of the most powerful corporations in congress (shudder... corporations in congress) time and time again, but has been of limited effectiveness mostly due to the presence of a hostile congress. I'm not saying he's an angel (I believe he's order more assassinations of terrorists on foreign soil than any other president in US history), but I strongly strongly doubt anyone has him in their pocket (unlike president Bush who pretty much was bought, owned, wrapped and delivered with a bow on top by big oil). And think of where we'd be with McCain.

Like boberfett posted. they will pay lip service then gut/rollback etc anything that puts them down. Party means shit when it interferes with them making money
