There are a couple waitresses at my mom's resturant that would bring me bad luck, in the form of a fist to my face, if I "stiffed" them :D

How come giving a tip to a waitress is about as close to required as the bill itself. But no one ever tips anyone else in the service industry, like the kid who carries out your new tv or the friendly lady at the information booth that gives you directions? These people work ther butts off helping make your time shopping more enjoyable? Is there anyone who tips everyone that gives good service? Just wondering...

Regardless, whether the service is great or crap, you should always tip your waitress/waiter even if it is only 5% or so. You might think that they will take 5% as a joke if the normal tip is 15%, but it is better than nothing. As everyone knows, waiters are paid nothing and depend on tips, congragulations Lucky on making this woman lose her hourly wage.
She still makes her hourly wage. What state do you live in that has no minimum wage for waitresses. Provide a link on your labor dept website to back it up as well.

http://www.dol.gov/esa/programs/whd/state/tipped.htm

:)

Federal law, to my undestanding, mandates that combined cash wages and tips must equal 5.15/hr.
It does. If tips are less than minimum wage the employer has to make up the difference.

As a rule, I am a generous tipper when I receive excellent service and I stiff when I get horrible service. I see nothing wrong with this. I define horrible service as obvious screwups without apology followed by the well-he-won't-tip-me-now-so-why-bother attitude. Screwups, no matter how bad, followed by apology and prompt fixing are considered excellent service. Everyone makes mistakes and has bad days, the difference is in the attitude. The OP's waittress provided horrible service and deserved to get stiffed.

You said at strike one you had to yell at her to get a coke, at that point you were guaranteed yourself bad service. Also when you asked the food to be taken back, you just got an extra helping of spit and man jizz in your omelets, I wonder if that tastes good with ketchup?

Bad mistake! You have no idea what you also ate in those eggs. I've seen even some of the nicest restaurants, the chefs would abuse any returned foods.

Scary thought, but I think you're right. If you're lucky, they just spit on it.

It was Lucky! So I guess that means they spit on his food... :p

I'm normally a decent tipper but I got the WORST service the other day. Took almost an hour to get two (cold) hamburgers. When, after 40 minutes, I walked up to the waiter at the cash register (note, WALKED, since after 45 minutes he hadn't even checked into the table) to ask him if the food was coming, he ignored me for about three minutes, not even eye contact. At which point he explained to me it was the lunch rush (all of three tables had people at them) and that the food would be there in five minutes. Ten minutes later we got the cold burgers and hot fries (I guess we were waiting for the fries to cook?) I paid them what I owed them and wrote "Poor Service" on the tip line.

People have bad days, yes. But its their job. If they don't like it or can't do it, then they need fired. I too will add or take away money. Smallest tip i've left, was a note that said "TIP: Be a better waitress" The most i've ever left was about 60%. And that was a full meal for two...not just a soda or something.

It's possible that she was sick of your attitude from the get go, and the lack of tip was worth it to her to see you in such agony. I used to do this all the time when I was a waiter. If the guest was being obnoxious or giving me attitude, I'd give them a lack of service they'd never forget. The goal is, hopefully, that they'll never come back. The key is to always smile as you're giving them sh!tty service. Getting stiffed is nothing, the server will make it up from the generous, gracious couple the next table over. Some folks never learn though, they keep coming back. And they complain every time they come in. It's like, why do you keep coming back if you're not enjoying yourself? Get the f out of dodge and go somewhere else.

Trust me, she won't miss the $4 you would've given her.

I believe someone tried to do that to me once. I could have been jumping to a conclusion, but it felt good anyway.
After being seated she took the order for drinks, I wanted to change mine so I quickly called her name as she was walking away. She sighed and turned around with such a scowl on her face you would have thought I just kicked her mother.
After that it took her about 15 minutes to take our order. I knew at that point I was going to be totally shafted at this restaurant and possibly have my food fvcked with. So I told my gf at the time to prepare for me to be the biggest asshole she has ever seen.

Waitress came back after 15 mins, while I watched her wait on tables that were seated after us, and took our order. I placed a larger than normal order with some special requests on the food. While waiting for our food we ran out of drinks and the waitress never came back to the table until the food was ready about 20 minutes later.
After she got done placing the food on the table I took my plate and flipped it upsidedown on the table. I got up and told the waitress she might want to clean that up and to have a nice day. Then I walked out with my gf without paying the bill.
I think that was one of the meanest things I've ever done.

Here is my take on it...

I could get the worst service ever... wrong food, wait ages, comes out wrong... but if the server has a good attitude and seems like she really cares, i will tip generously. If i get good service from someone with a sh!t attitude, i will tip the minimum. If i get great service with a great attitude, i tip really really well.

to me it is about servers attitude. everyone has a bad day, where everything goes wrong. and i can forgive that.... depending on the attitude.

here is a good example... (and she will kill me for saying this).. but VeggieFrog tried waitressing in a diner in town. She sucked at it. She did not get good training and they just stuck her in a section where they needed her and kinda left her to fend for herself. The other waitresses were bitter old women and would not help her at all. she was lost and made many mistakes...

like forgetting coffee, or mistiming the toast, or not knowing what came with what as a side... etc.... but she is so polite and really felt bad about her screw ups that ppl would give her huge tips. one guy was there for breakfast with his son one day... she never brought the juice, had to go back for the toast and completely forgot the guys coffee refill. She was SWAMPED with six tables on her second day. She was so apologetic, and REALLY felt bad.... she could not apologize enough to the guy. He ended up leaving her the almost 100% of the check. She did not want to take it, cause she did not feel she earned it, but he insisted. then the guy praised her to the manager.

In that situation i would have done the same. but if i got that kind of service and the server did not care.. i would walk out without leaving a penny.

(VeggieFrog will be pissed off if she sees I related that story about her ;))

Uh, because they probably make more than $2.13 a hour? I wait tables currently, just graduated, going to relocate soon and depend on tips, because that $2.13 a hour I get paid doesnt get to far.

Hey guys, if something isn't done right, it's the waiter's/waitress' responsibility to ensure that it is done correctly.

Oh really? She didn't make it up from the THREE tables surrounding us as we each shared our stories of how bad our waitress was. We kept each other informed of when the waitress came into view so we could flag her for whatever the table next to us needed.

She certainly didn't make anything off anyone around us. We didn't give her any attitude, I don't want to give her that excuse to treat us poorly. And I don't care if she thinks treating us poorly will keep us away. My complaint to the owner,in minute detail, (loudly, in front of a line of about 30 people waiting) that her service was abysmal, probably won't make up for that.
