Regardless, whether the service is great or crap, you should always tip your waitress/waiter even if it is only 5% or so. You might think that they will take 5% as a joke if the normal tip is 15%, but it is better than nothing. As everyone knows, waiters are paid nothing and depend on tips, congragulations Lucky on making this woman lose her hourly wage.

She doesn't deserve to make extra if she isn't doing her job properly.

Figured with all the tipping threads I'd share my story of the day.

I give a waitress five strikes before I stiff em, which rarely, if ever happens. I'm out for brunch with my fiancee (a waitress).

Strike one:
When ordering, I had to yell at her before she walked away that I wanted a coke. Then it took 10 minutes to come.

yeah ill give you that one

Strike two:
Fiancee and I both specifically asked for no hash browns, and fruit instead. Hash browns still come.

possibly not her fault? dumbass chef?

Strike three: I asked for no whipped cream on pancakes, she puts it on anyways.

again chef? waitress doesnt cook your food though its her job to tell him...maybe she cant write? maybe chef is a useless mofo?

Strike four: Upon sending our food back, it took 12 minutes to get our omelettes back. 12 minutes to transfer the omelette to a new plate and add fruit? Pfft.

you actually timed it? sad

Strike five: Was not checking back to see if we needed refills. And took an additional 7-8 minutes after bussing us to bring the check.

7 - 8 mins, in a rush or something? maybe other guests to attend too? your not the only people dining there

edit: strike 6: asked for a box to take home extra food. We could see a stand about 20 feet away from us with take home boxes, but what does she do after we ask for a box? Service four other tables before coming back. I was on my way to get one myself when she finally came back.

So I complained to the manager, got $5 off, and stiffed her.

If you do a crappy job, don't expect even 10%.

i think you need to get real

EDIT : after reading the post seems most think you were fair....guess thats how it goes down in the US

i know we dont tip our waiters here, but i guess us brits arent too keen to kick up a fuss. we just get on with it, and we like waiting. i think its just nice to have some one actually do something for you, even if they are slow. eating outs not so big here, so when we do eat out we generally take our time, and slow waiters/waitress' doesnt really matter....since were happy to take it slow and relax

Ah, the entitlement mindset. The only person the waitress has to blame is herself. If she can't or won't do her job properly she doesn't deserve to be rewarded in any manner.

I think you need to read KarenMarie's post. He has the right to expect certain service, if it's not present, he'll be unhappy. If you're willing to tip when not earned, then you're just a pushover. He's sticking up for himself.

Bad mistake! You have no idea what you also ate in those eggs. I've seen even some of the nicest restaurants, the chefs would abuse any returned foods.

Deserves more than nothing for just taking the crap that they get all day from demanding customers

edited above......i realise that we look for different things when at a restaurant.

we dont tip our waiters because its not custom, they dont need to rely on tips, if you tip in this country it usually means youve been mighty impressed!

If she took their crap and provided great service then she will get a tip.
Since this isn't a communist country, no one is forcing her to be a waitress.

Scary thought, but I think you're right. If you're lucky, they just spit on it.

They aren't forced to take crap. They need reinforcement to learn that customer service is not a skill they have and so are in the wrong job area. You are doing them a favor.

the tip is for *service*, not for any emotional damage she may suffer from other people

Like I said, my fiancee is a waitress who busts her ass every time she works. We leave good tips when deserved. We don't leave anything for terrible service.

I'm normally a good tipper if the service is somewhat decent. Regular waitresses who know me well enough to bring me my favorite drinks and so on almost as soon as I sit down, get more then I would normally tip for great service(once, I tipped $15 on a $20 check to a regular waitress).

But service like that is completely inexcusable. A week or so ago, at the resturant my mom works at, a waitress that she said is "normally a good waitress." got $3, from my mother. If it were me, she would have gotten tipped $0. My mom was already there, and had her drink, I didn't get my drink after I got there, for almost 10 minutes. She also ignored our table most the night. I had to ASK for a refill. And to top it off, she didn't listen and wrote my order down wrong.

So, good on you, OP. Bad service = bad tip, good service = good tip. Waitstaff, learn it, live it!

6 strikes? Christ.

I think giving people tips is necessary, but when they do a horrible job who the hell cares?

What? Hell, he was being generous with the 6 strikes thing.

Tips are not ncessary, I don't know why you think they are. They are to be earned.

She still makes her hourly wage. What state do you live in that has no minimum wage for waitresses. Provide a link on your labor dept website to back it up as well.

Exactly, some people in this threads act like tips are a right. I always tip as long as the service was ok. If the server does a horrible job, they don't deserve a tip.

Federal law, to my undestanding, mandates that combined cash wages and tips must equal 5.15/hr.

That list is a little outdated and inaccurate for some states, but still accurate enough to go by. So xylitol lives in CA? They get the full minimum wage there.
