1. Make it shiny
2. Make it really easy to use

Low barrier to entry + pretty to look at = win for consumers. PC makers are starting to get the hint, but very few PC companies win in the aesthetics arena like Apple does. People like to get attached to things, as well as to personalize things (look at the millions of colored cases for iPods, for example).

shiny attracts scratches, smudges and finger prints to mar that pretty shiny into a turd. more people are going matte finishes to avoid those issues.
everything is easy to use these days. the old tablets were pretty easy to use too actually...just click on icons, how hard is that?

i was just commenting on the date of release. i thought about posting a picture of the newton with the word fail and a picture of the ipad with the word win, to illustrate that people like shiny, easy to use things things. but i figured that had been talked about already.

A lot of people may not like apple but they deserve the credit. They weren't the first, but they revitalized the mp3 player, smartphone, and tablet market even though people doubted them all three times.

If Apple produced another 3 consecutive highly successful devices, Apple haters would still speculate "Marketing hype, iSheep, nice n' shiny, failure, etc.". I guess Apple making an awesome device is out of the question.

Apple beat everyone to the punch with their Touch UI because they got a head start on development time and it definitely shows. If you look at iOS's closest contender, its Android, which is no surprise because Google has put in about the same development time as well.

Also, Marketing that create a market for the product. Not create a product and hope consumers make a market for it.

they didnt really introduce us to the tablet. there was a 7" tablet like the ipad but thicker several years prior. i forget what it was called but i remember i considered getting one....i think it ran windows XP if i recall correctly and some touch software/driver i assume.

If anyone else made the ipad, it wouldnt have gotten nearly as much media attention. but all Apple really did was evolve the iphone into the itouch then make it larger

I did not want to split hairs, but the literal definition would be to introduce this generation of novelty product... ;)

I have not heard too much from Google on this.

They do not seem to be shouting "That's nothing, look at what WE have!!!!"

They are doing what Google does best, sitting quietly, letting things "leak" from other sources while they work furiously behind the scenes.

They probably have their copyright lawyers working double time to make sur the things they took from everybody else are now different enough to call their own.

That may sound bitter, but I would bet money that they are doing just that. If something works, you try to do something similar. Apple has a lot of good ideas with their system, Google would be stupid to ignore that, but they would also be stupid not to cover their own ass.

yea the haters seem to think the competitors to apple lost all those potential profits based on principle:p

One of the biggest issues with computer companies is communication. Do you think the CEO of ACER, HP, or Dell, sits down with their designer/programmer to brainstorm and reject certain designs because they don't meet their design philosophy? Chances are, revenue reports play a bigger consideration than delivering quality products for these CEOs

As far as I know, Steve Jobs is very involved with Johnathan Ives. I would imagine much more than other companies.

trying to compare the "tablet market" of yesteryear to today is stupid. The technology was not there for there to be a market.
