Tablets have been playing around for years.

It is just now that technology has caught up enough to make them practical, although cost is still a bit high.

So, naturally, Apple is the perfect company to introduce this new novelty. Regardless of any other factor, Apple devotees are less prone to sticker shock than most PC hunters. This is not saying that the Pad does not COST that much to make, but simply the fact that Apple can get away with making one of these guys expensive enough to cover costs without too many people complaining about it.

Hell, look around even these forums, any time someone has mentioned the price being high has had a dozen people come in calling the detractors Apple Haters.

But the fact is, for something that is essentially a leisure toy, it is quite expensive.

Perfect for the Apple crowd! ;)

the tablet market was going to happen regardless of the iPad success or not. it's just a natural evolution of our technologies. it might have slowed down the flow of tablets some, but the market would have been created anyways. Apple just got a jump on it, good for them.

you are right. what i was trying to say was that the netbook market declinination was due to the ipad.

I think that will change some when AMDs bobcat comes out. 1080p from a netbook with HDMI.

woah nice! I'll be buying a new netbook then. I cant stand the lack of power and retail space in my netbook. That thing is slow as hell

he is right netbooks for FTL I have friends with both smart phones and netbooks and just laugh the phones do all the netbooks do...
writing out a long email or forum post on my smart phone makes me want to shoot myself in the face.

it's also nice that I can leave my netbook in my cubicle at work, download movies/music on my home PC, and then just plug in a thumb drive so that I can watch my public domain HD movies at work.

People that communicate in 140 characters or less will reasonably see netbooks as failures. People that communicate in sentences and paragraphs will see netbooks as the savior of the computer race. I see netbooks as the perfect option for someone with a powerhouse PC that also needs computing on the go. Sure, the netbook won't game, but other than that, what can't it do? I am actually thinking about getting a netbook in the near future, I want portability and any task I need to achieve on the go doesn't require massive computing power.

It's true, netbooks aren't made to be fast if you're just browsing the net and doing email, but I put a SSD drive in my wife's netbook and the speed vastly improved.

The Macbook Air is nothing but a "Ferrari" of netbooks. That being said, I wouldn't mind having one to play around with...

There is a place in the market for every product. The claims that he makes in that comment isn't really saying anything bad or good. He just called them cheap, which they are. They are a dumbed down laptop.

I'm not a big Jobs fan, but this is nothing shocking or revealing that he is stating. I prefer netbooks to tablets, but I agree that they are just a less capable laptop. The Ipad doesn't have full computer functionality either. People like both products for the portability, if you want full functionality you get a laptop.

Wyndryu,

You know as well as I do you do not call something "cheap" unless you are touting its affordability.

He was insulting them. Otherwise he would have said "inexpensive".

I don't know if he can physically say that word though... it might make him hemmorhage.... ;)

they didnt really introduce us to the tablet. there was a 7" tablet like the ipad but thicker several years prior. i forget what it was called but i remember i considered getting one....i think it ran windows XP if i recall correctly and some touch software/driver i assume.

If anyone else made the ipad, it wouldnt have gotten nearly as much media attention. but all Apple really did was evolve the iphone into the itouch then make it larger

possibly some sales. in all honesty i believe it has more to do with those who wanted them already got them and the fact most people really just don't need new systems anymore. I still use mine in my sig. I have multiple times wanted to upgrade and every time I can't find a reason why to. There is no reason outside of me spending money. Everything I do is still snappy and fast as hell.

to the tablet market? not really, Apple just got there first. tablets were going to happen period, it was just a matter of certain technologies catching up to the concept. now they are there, apple was out the door first probably because they did get to skip the whole netbook thing, but even they don't even have the sexiest thing out. Side by side I liked the 7" Galaxy a little more, the stuff I'm seeing from CES right now for Android tablets is quite kick ass. I probably won't own one any time soon, but imo Apple has a lot of catch up to play technology wise this year.

apple haters gotta make up their mind. Apple was there first or Apple just copies shit that's out there?

2nd galaxy is getting terrible reviews and is a copycat of the ipad.

Why doesn't the Samsung get all the hate that Apple does? Hell it's even more expensive than the iPad.

So turning the Apple hate around, the Samsung galaxy is an overpriced POS and I can do better for less.

The reason the iPad is a huge hit is because it is so simple to use.

If the iPad was running OS X it would have sucked and nobody would have bothered (well, it wouldn't be a huge hit like it is now).

Likewise, if a tablet was released years ago with a slick UI and some sort of app market, things would be different.

Who wants a tablet running Windows XP? Not me.

the tablet market has been around for ages. if anything it was in a complete slump, and the ipad jump started it again. tablets are certainly nothing new, but apple definitely showed people what was possible with a tablet with a good operating system behind it.

to say apple got a jump on it is somewhat absurd, as they've been trying to put out a tablet since the newton. they just finally got it right. i'm excited to see where the market goes from here with the android platform.

bfdd is a complete hater and also quite misinformed on things he likes to hate on, which makes him even worse than the "apple worshipers" he tries to rant and rave about. you can't use facts and logic, he'll twist them and make things up to prove his points, which are nothing more than blind hate. i think steve jobs banged him mom or something.

I needed something small, portable & affordable. I'm satisfied with my purchase. If I could have afforded to get a laptop instead, I would have.

Netbooks are junk - at least for my requirements.

Now for someone who wants something small [with a SMALL keyboard] for checking email, basic surfing [don't play flash heavy games], or web camera chatting [Yahoo messenger] - then it's a good toy.

moron or not, i'm correct in saying he was right. they were cheap laptops and i'm correct in saying he missed out on the $$$ that others like Asus done raped out of people like you and moved on.
I have not purchased either cause i know their both fads...so whos the real moron?

steve jobs would never stoop so low as to offer an apple device that is affordable to the masses, hence the $1k macbook air netbook. everyone knows this.

if the iPad doesn't fit in your pocket, you're not buying the correct Jobs-endorsed pants.

warning, they only come in one size/inseam/color.

I would never buy a galaxy either. It is an overpriced POS, I just happen to like the 7" form factor more so than the 10". I also find iOS to be dated compared to newer versions of Android and even Windows Phone 7. Samsung doesn't get all the hate Apple does because Samsung doesn't throw themselves into your face like Apple does. It also wouldn't be right to say Apple copied anyone but themselves with the iPad. I mean they already made the product, just in a smaller version.

erik, yes i realize the tablet market "existed" before Apple, but it's hardly comparable to what we're calling tablets today. You're right I should have said "it was dormant lying in wait for technology to catch up with the idea" oh wait I did say that. Apple jumped on it first and made a crapload of money.
