Sting Ray stings are very painful. Many people are stung in the foot while walking along an ocean beach. Sting Rays like to wade right along the shoreline in just a foot or less of water. They blend into the sand so you usually don?t see them. Then a person goes strolling along the shoreline, steps on a sting ray and the tail flips up and hits them in the top of the foot. Very bloody and painful. Not fatal but one can go into shock and pass out from the sting. Just like being stabbed by a two pronged cooking fork. And the tail flips up in an instant to do its stab.
Odds of having a sting ray swim by and stab is extremely rare. It truly was not his day.
I've seem many many people limping alone the beach just after a sting. Blood all over. After seeing that, you think twice before walking along the shoreline. Sure takes the romance and fun out of it.

What an amazing man -- this is so sad. His poor wife and children :(

God bless the Irwin family. May you rest in peace, Mr. Irwin

Damn, according to CNN, he pulled the bard from his chest and then died...all of it caught on tape.

They said he stayed concious long enough to pull the barb out.

That probably speeded up his death.

I can't believe people rail on him so much. He found something that he loved (interacting with some of the most dangerous creatures in the world) and found a way to make that his vocation... isn't that what we all should aspire to do?

This is hilarious. Let's pretend he wasn't famous and that you were all reading this article. "Man leaves family, 3 year old fatherless after sticking his thumb up a stingray's arse."

You'd all be lauging and calling for a darwin award. He's a selfish prick for continuing his antics with a family to provide for.

He gambled. He lost. There's way bigger tragedies going on a daily basis.

You are beyond stupid and ignorant..

He wasnt touching the animal.. he was swimming close to it for a documentary..
he has done more for animals and for the world conservationists than most people do in a lifetime..
he has donated millions of dollars to save and preserve nature..

what have you done today?
or for that matter in your LIFE that bettered mankind.. or animalkind..
my guess is.. like your IQ...
0..

Not a good news; he seemed like a very nice fellow - very pasionate about the animal world...

That's so true. Why does a decent guy like Steve Irwin die to a stingray barb and OJ Simpson not get killed by a golf ball to the head?

Didnt care for him that much but I respected what he did for animals and kids learning about cool animals. I definetely feel for his family especially his young kids. Its a shame and will be hard to tell them their Dad is gone. R.I.P. Steve Irwin

The reason why people are so sad over Steve Irwin is because of what he has done for the enviroment for many years. He has made so many people animal lovers and has touched the hearts of young children and adults everywhere.

He was one of the few people that I enjoyed watching on tv. His show was among the best. It actually was informing and entertaining. Thousands of people went to his zoo to watch him perform live. He put his life on the line to educate people and to do it in a fun way that attracted people's interest. I think Animal Planet's success has a lot to do with Steve Irwin. I still cannot believe this great person is not here. I will miss him so much.

But i always thought your tactics were borderline torment/teasing and have never been a fan of your shows.

Hmm... I never once thought anything he did could be called tormenting or teasing.

As has been mentioned before, there are lots of dangerous jobs worked by people with families... police officer, fireman, military, crab fisherman, oil rigs, etc...

..he was more involved in dangerous stunts not too far removed from a circus act.
