Steroids

I developed a chest cold back in late February that never went away and eventually turned into Pneumonia. I finally made it to the Doc this past Tuesday. She put me on Amoxicilin (antibiotic) and Methylprednisolone (steroid). I've taken the antibiotic before but I've never taken a steroid.

The steroid has turned me into an eating machine. I'm eating everything in site. My metabolism seems to be in afterburner mode. I had a small cut on my leg from doing some yard work that I got on Monday - it's 95% healed. I haven't healed like that since I was a teenager. Since I have been taking the steroid I only sleep maybe three hours a night. Then I'm awake and can't go back to sleep if I want to. I freaking rearranged all the furniture in my house yesterday, every single room, inside maybe two hours.

I understand now why athletes take steroids; I feel like superman - but the long term health effects just aren't worth it. I feel like I could do a 5k run right now, even though my lungs are still recovering. Anyway, my supply runs out in I think three more days. I hope there is no "crash" associated with this medication. I suppose I'll just be plain old me again, without my super powers.

Damn, that must be a crazy feeling. I've had Amoxicillin so much that it has no effect on me anymore (lots of throat infections, tonsil problems when I was young).

Is that the Prednisone shit?

That stuff . . . . damn I used to be on it all the time for various reasons. I gained 20 pounds in a three week stint on it once.

It worked VERY well, but damn...the food. I was literally eating 24/7.

Just finished taking Methylprednisolone, for a bad sinus infection that 2 different antibiotics wouldn't touch. Cleared me right up. Didn't make me eat more or gain weight like most. Had that infection for about 6 months, sucked.

I have no idea about the differences in different types of steroids.

Steroid is really just a name for chemicals in the body, i.e. definition: A group of molecules that includes cholesterol. The sex hormones estrogen and testosterone are built from steroids, as are many modern anti-inflammatory drugs.

The ones people are joking about (PED's) are usually anabolic, but not always.

Corticosteroids inhibit inflammation.

Anabolic steroids make you hit home runs.

Exactly- corticosteroids should not have the effects of an anabolic.
Actually, for the last 2 weeks, I've been put on a corticosteroid for a recent bout of asthma- I've not noticed any change at all (other than no wheezing  ). I've been on them in the past as well and did not have any problems. I used to wonder about that when I was prescribed a "Steroid", but the MD assured me that it is nothing like the anabolic kind.

Yep, this reminds me of the idiots who said Curt Schilling cheated during the bloody sock game in which he needed corticosteroids on his ankle to pitch.

I don't claim to know what effects I should or should not be having. I have an insane amount of energy that I didn't have before, my appetite is ferocious and I can't sleep more than a few hours.

Corticosteroids increase appetite and weight gain. This is probably what has spiked your energy levels.

I took prednisone for a week and put on nearly 10 lbs in 5 days (was 120 lbs before that). The other thing they don't tell you about is that it can make you go crazy and you have to be careful coming off of it.
