Steps to (or tips for) setting up a new TV?

Just bought a new Samsung 27" TV, and I need some suggestions on how to adjust the image - and no, I don't have either the Avia or Digital Video Essentials DVDs to do it with, yet. I'll probably pick one up soon, though.

Just get the Avia disc, there isn't too much that some one can tell you to do specifically, for each TV is different.

Pick up DVE from Deep Discount DVD, it's only about 16 clams.

I wonder where I could pick DVE up locally? Best Buy only seems to carry the Avia disk; I guess I'll call Circuit City tommorow and ask (can't tell from their website - the disks are there, but niether says anything about local availability).

Sorry, not too sure. DDD does ship rather quickly though.

Found it online at borders, and reserved it for pickup at a nearby store. I'll drop by and pick it up sometime tommorow, probably. I know DDD ships quickly, but a) I'm impatient 😛 and b ) This is the busiest shipping time of the year; it could still take a while to get here.

Got the DVE disk, and after running through that, the set looks much better 🙂 Only problem now is that, depending on the source - and sometimes just the channel or show, if I'm watching TV - skintones aren't very consistent. Most of the time fairly-complected people look sunburnt (too much red); occasionally they look too pale. The easiest way I found around this, if it shows up, is to adjust the color temperature. I could probably fix it permanently if I could find a guide to what all the settings in the service menus do. I know better than to get in there and just start pushing buttons 😛

I've found it to be better, but opinions vary. I have DVE, VE, AVIA, S&V, and those THX optimizer disks here. I find I use DVE most often.

No clue - I knew some disks came with that, but I didn't know which ones; either way, I don't happen to own any of them. So I bought this one instead. It works pretty well, especially for color calibration - it comes with a little filter thing to look through when the DVD puts up the color test patern that helps you equalize RGB. This helped me a lot; by default this particular TV was very red-biased. So was the last one I bought, come to think of it. As for the sound: right now I have only two tower speakers up front, running simple stereo sound, so I can't really comment on that.

um...correct me if I'm wrong, but a new DVD player shouldn't affect that, should it? the changes are made to the TV and - if you have surround sound - the reciever. I might be way off though😕

yeah, I guess so. I was just thinking that if you run everything through a reciever, the signal would only change between the DVD player and the reciever - since it then goes from the reciever to the TV, the tv would always be seeing a nearly identical signal.

Running it through your receiver just degrades your signal slightly (to not so slightly, depending on the receiver). Different DVD players will still affect the calibration.
