It causes games to lag just after loading points, made the older games very buggy, sometimes won't allow you to play at all, and gives you pop-ups advertising their software every week or so.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it remains running in my system tray, even when I exit my game. I still have to close stead AFTER I exit the game. Yeah, it's sorta petty, but it irks me.

If anyone knows how to make steam exit upon exiting the game, please do share said info.

It's fine now. It used to have all kinds of problems, but now most of the major ones have been fixed.

The first time I got it, it took over 3 hours to download, and then refused to start. I ended up uninstalling it that time, and reinstalling about a year later after some issues had been resolved.

I dont mind steam at all, on the contrary. Without steam I doubt I'd still be playing CS:S or DoD:s a year after I bought a HL2 silver package. I'd probably have bought different games and wasted more cash just to get that impulsive gaming fill. Not having to worry about CD's and boxes is a plus. (2 of the 4 avaiable shelfs I have next to my desk are full of games/boxes)

You don't see any negatives with it? How about if you want to sell your copy of Half Life 2 for starters. Then theres the fact that you have to connect to the internet at least the first time just to play in single player mode. Then theres the nightmare setup problems if you don't have a simple setup (modem hooked up to your PC directly). Theres also the system resources being used up by this piece of crap program when it's completely unnecessary. Theres a lot more but if you claim to not see any negatives about it, you either haven't thought this through or you keep your eyes closed :)
- Can't sell it - sure you can, just give sell your account info and hand it over. Like selling an account in an MMORPG or something.

- Why is connecting to the internet such a big deal? I'm sure you have an always-on connection. What about it ACTUALLY bothers you, or is it just the principle of the matter?

- Nightmare problems if you don't have a modem hooked up directly to your NIC? I'm behind a router at home that is connected to a jack upstairs. No problems at all, never even needed to open any ports.

- Resource hog. Show me proof that the game will run AT LEAST 5 fps faster without Steam running and then I'll agree with that one. It doesn't use much...

Why should I have to give my account information over? Why the hell should I even have to have an account for a single player game?

Again, why should I have to connect to the internet in order to play a single player game which I bought from the store? Not just that but there was the dreaded "Server authentication Failed" error. Here are some more wonderful errors from the great Steam:

I have a fairly simple setup (modem ----- wireless router ----- access point ------ switch ------ PC) and the damned thing would not work for the longest time. Even people here couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. I had another PC that was hooked up to the wireless router and was able to connect. But my gaming pc could not connect to Steam's wonderful service. Even Steam tech support was clueless. It took me days before I finally got it working.

Proof really isn't necessary. The point is, why should I be forced to run an extra program just to play a single player game which I purchased. What's the point of having the extra program run and take up my resources? As for "proof" about steam being a resource hog, here's a link to an article about steam's use of resources

You can see that steam was using up 41 meg of memory. That doesn't seem like a significant amount to you?
I asked if you had any REAL problem with connecting to the net to play an SP game, or if it was just the principle that made you mad. You gave no reason, you just said Again, why should I have to connect to the internet in order to play a single player game which I bought from the store?

With it being so difficult to make it work for your setup, yes, that does suck, but I'm sure it wouldn't be so difficult today. They had a lot of problems with routers and such initially.

41 MB. Well, whether its 41 megs or not, it doesn't affect me when I'm not playing, because I close Steam, and while I am playing, I get no problems. And if I have a fairly average computer. So if you had 512 megs of memory, I could see the complaint. Why you care with a gig or 2, though, I have no idea. You might say that's a lot of mem, but is it hindering your game-playing at all?

To answer your first question, it's both. There is the principle of the matter and then theres the logistics. When I first moved to my new place, I was unable to get my net access up for about a week or so. There are others that don't even have net access. I can understand having to login if you want to play multiplayer but it's idiotic that it's required for single player as well.

And yes it does suck that it wouldn't work nicely with my setup. I was finally able to get it to work but you have to worry about the normal Joe Shmoe who just bought the game and wants to pop in the cd and play. Alas, he's unable to because of this idiotic program called steam.

Again about the 41MB of memory being used. That is a significant amount being used up for a completely unnecessary process. If I have to choose between having 640MB of memory free and 599MB of memory free, guess which one I prefer?

You're probably one of those guys that gets excited about getting 200 extra points out of 3dmark, even though you won't notice any speed increase in your games at all.

Ok I'll give you an answer. Yes it does affect my gameplay by having 40+MB less memory available for my game.

I think many of the complaints are valid about steam, although I think those that used it when it was originally introduced and haven't touched it since would be surprised at its improvement. I still maintain that I find it a better system then the alternatives. I'm so tired of dealing with finding cd cracks or making backup cd copies and all that bullsh|t for games that I legally own. With steam, all I have to do is remember the login info and everything I want is available for download.

well in a way valve has earned the privilidge of trying such a thing. they have a reserve of good will. if EA or some other dirty company tried i'd feel different. definetly boycott ea if they tried, they are annoying already.
