Steam has potential...

Wow,

I downloaded steam last night from fileshack in record times. Then I installed it in under 5 minutes.

This program is just an absolute dream for me. Why do I like it?

1. It allowed me to customize every setting for CS1.6 from a very easy menu setup. I didn't have to go searching for obscure commands, they were all present and accounted for in the steam system.

2. I could join and leave servers at the drop of the hat from the same interface. It is almost like every map is preloaded, the way it joins and quits so fast.

3. The new fonts and gui for CS1.6 were pretty nice, for defaults. In my old CS 1.5, I had customized everything, fonts, gui, crosshairs, etc. But the new CS1.6 has me pretty content with the default! The text was very readable.

4. While on a server, I could add friends instantly to steam from that server! Such cool inter-operability.

5. The application itself ran pretty slick, although it took about a minute to open after innitially clicking (guessing it does some funky stuff in the background?)

So yea, as you can guess I am pretty psyched about the application. I think the main reason is because I never really liked the main menu system in the half-life engine. Just changing settings was a task that would usually get me booted from a server.

If only Quake1 was on steam and ran as nicely as the new cs1.6.....I would be in heaven.

I guess I am in the minority, but I don't think people have been very patient with steam.

it took me and my roommate both the better part of 4 days to get it installed and working. mine works (doesnt crash my comp anymore), but still wont connect to servers. i have been more than patient. 4 days is unacceptable.

Steam had potential, but the gas engine replaced it. However, Steam is still used for power generation.

What part of the install took 4 days?

Was it getting the cached file? 70 minute wait on fileshack a few days ago. Basically, I clicked the link, went and did something, came back and waited the last 10 minutes for my turn in line. Then it took another 60 minutes or so to download the file.

I don't play CS, but I do play TFC. And I think steam will be very nice once the initial download rush is over.

Steam fvcked up my computer.

My internet connection slowed to a crawl whenever it was open. It randomly locked up, and caused other programs (IE) to lock up randomly.
I never got it to update CS, it just locked up whenever I tried.

I just uninstalled that POS.

oops.. hit reply before typing anything..

There are other sites for getting the steam installed and the cached CS1.6 then from the steampowered.com website. I HATE how most of their links are to file sites that force me to join before I can download, OR it's a foreign site and I can't read anythin.

my roomate got steqam installed ina bgout 60min, it took me 2 days and to do it i had to remove every peice of valve, and serria software and registy entries form my computer, then i installed steam once again and it worked perfectly.

Anyone else getting that bug where after you die, if you hit your duck button to switch your view settings, you can't get rid of the view menu on the bottom? Oh, this glitch is also not letting me type stuff either. I have to type through console using "say" or "teamsay." For the love of god, someone tell me how to fix this.
