Once again I can't login on steam with my gaming PC. Have to delete my folder and reinstall when I feel like loading it up again....

And let me guess, that is the exact "advice" steam support told you to try ?

Damn DRM keeping people who buy games away from their bought games.

I haven't had any problems like that. Man that would majorly piss me off. Lately steam doesn't log in successfully on the first try sometimes. I've been having general Internet problems, so I kinda chalked my steam woes up to that. Earlier YouTube and amazon wouldn't load, but AT forums would. During that time steam took two tries to log in. I dunno what's going on with my ISP.

A complete pile of garbage for me for the last 4 months. Anyone else have problems where Steam will not let you connect unless you delete the entire steam folder and reinstall (keeping steamapps folder untouched.)

Any time I want to start steam I have to do this lately.

This is what I do whenever I have steam problems.

  1. Delete everything except the steamapps folder
  2. Delete clientregistry.blob
  3. move steam program folder > appcache to ramdrive
  4. Move steam > config > htmlcache to ramdisk

!! Please note that by moving appcache to ramdrive, when you restart your machine your http cache will be deleted. Http cache is the key that allows you to play your games offline. !!

Hope that helps OP.

Been using steam for what seems like forever now. Never once had a problem with a game that was related to the steam service. Definitely not experiencing the issues you are now.

Not had any real problems with Steam or Origin unless you can remember the very early days of Steam where it WAS buggy.

Since the 'big picture' update it's been updating relentlessly, mildly annoying.

Personally it hasn't been 'recent' for me but over the course of using it it's completely broken a number of games for me. I think I lost Metro2033, Superbrothers and Borderlands all to Steam bork. Can just re-install but still, shouldn't really happen.

I have major updating problems with steam for some reason. A lot of games will download updates for a second, then stop, then spike back to downloading, then stop. Patches can take *DAYS* to finish. Tried completely wiping out and reinstalling steam multiple times, changing download servers, no dice. Occasionally forcing an error check on the game will correct it, maybe one in 10 attempts. It's persisted through multiple formats/reinstalls of Windows as well.

The odd part is the core game downloads are always fine, its strictly game updates that do this. It doesn't seem to be a network thing either, it's persisted through a complete move to a new town, with a brand new router/switch/etc and a totally different ISP.

Are you running everything at stock speed? If you are overclocking, you might be corrupting your steam folder if the OC is only 90% stable.

Lol that's some impressive pebkac

One of the games I installed wrecked the entire system and had to restore from a system image. I still highly prefer steam, the steamsapps folder flexibility, and the friends system. I would say the only benefit to origin is faster download speeds.

I think I have the same issue as you. Can't remember if it's an actual update or just checking for update but every time I start steam a progress bar pops up for a minute or two. Pretty annoying.

I'm still having problems with game pages like the community tab and whatnot. They often get stuck on a black page and I have to navigate to library and back into the community tab for it to refresh.

Overall, it's just been a lot of minor inconveniences so far. Haven't had anything like 'can't run in offline mode' idiocy in a long while.

No problems until today. Been playing bioshock and can't load at all. Tried all the different delete appcache, regedit, etc...and nothing. Keep getting app already running error. Getting pissed with steam but all other games working?

This seems obvious, but did you restart Windows? Did you Ctrl-Alt-Del to look for a running Bioshock process?

I sometimes get an app already running error with XCom, but it's when I stupidly double-click on the Play button instead of single-clicking it. (Firaxis really ought to look up how to have an app make sure you're only running a single instance though, it's easy.)

Thanks Dave, tried but didn't work. When I launched Steam today it showed that I had no games but account mgr showed my games????WTF? Reboot computer and fine but no dice on Bioshock game. Never had probs with Steam

E-mailed Steam, followed tech support instructions and FUBARed Steam worse. What is wrong with Steam lately?????? I have never had problems until recent updates...they hiring a bunch of uneducated grads?

I just had a minor issue with New Vegas. Redownloaded it at 1.7MB so no, steam is groovy.

Calling bullshit on the "minor problems" with FONV... dude please, that game is held together with rubber bands and paperclips. I know this because I'm about 50 hours in...

Although I found giving it admin and running it in compat helped on Win8.

The suggested fix in the thread is to delete the whole folder mines two files like I have been doing.

No, I mentioned twice that I had problems with the beta program. Did you check to make sure you were NOT in the steam client beta program like I stated?

other then a lack of good flash sales (cmon, From Dust, Castle Crashers, gimme something new!) I've had stellar download rates.

Heh, you can say that again. Lots of clipping issues, and it is possible to get your character stuck. I won't get into ways you fubar your quest, and the only fix is to use console commands.

I don't remember any of those problems except for the clipping issue. I don't think I ever got stuck or had to use console to finish a fubar quest line. But I do remember crashing every 30 minutes.

I blame Beth games for my habit of over-saving in every game I play. I think if there's a quick save feature, I don't save by the hour, I save every time I take a drink of water.

The Steam client is always so sluggish for me. I have no idea why - my PC is fine and other programs run and work without a hitch. But Steam just moves at a snail's pace when I launch it.

Yeah it takes forever to load, sluggish while in it, but not totally awful. Load time is strange though, sometimes 30 seconds.

My PC starts and is fully booted to desktop in less time than it takes to launch steam to a useable state. Also like some, annoyed at all the recent updates including that stupid "Big picture" one.

I've never had problems until about a week ago. Since then I haven't been able to load Steam.

I boot it up. It runs fine for about 1 minute. I can browse the store and everything. Then all of a sudden it freezes and eventually crashes (no crash message, just closes out).

I've been busy so I haven't really tried fixing it yet. First step will probably be an uninstall/reinstall suppose.
