Nvidia made a point to make a announcement (August) that Kepler would not come in 2011

Yeah I remember that, I think that is around the time I saw the updated slide letting us know they were pushed back to 2012.

As I said, they originally stated the Fermi delay would not delay Kepler, but they have since pushed its release back to sometime later this year from the originally planned 2011, so it looks like it did delay the launch.

Hopefully this time it is simply a matter of being delayed due to Fermi's stumbles holding it up and not and stumbles falling under Kepler's ownership.

IMO, it almost has to hurt sales for AMD when Charlie at SA has them coming out with a new gpu in a story posted at the end of June. He had numerous stories of new possible product launches after that one. That we see repeated in these forums.
We see AMD will launch ahead of Nvidia in 2012, one can argue , why shouldn't a potential buyer of a 500 dollar video card,, not wait to see what the competition has to offer ? In the end , the better product , will rise to the top, whoever makes it.

Well, as someone who buys these $500 cards, I look on the historical performance disparity for the preceding two nodes; Nvidia being about 10-20% faster than AMD in the single-gpu bracket. I expect to see the same on this node.

The 480 was such a let down for many, particularly 5870 owners, because it came six months late and was on average 15% faster than 5870. Considering the six additional months of development it took to get it, it didn't impress. 5870 owners were happy because they already had six months of enjoyment out of the new level of performance the 5870 brought that they didn't spend waiting using old tech 55nm performance for what was a small increment of performance over their card.

It's sort of like upgrading from a 480 to a 580, you'd have to try to notice the difference in gameplay, or run benchmarks to compare.

For high resolution users the 480 was good to see because of the 1.5GB of VRAM seeing as 2GB 5870s were nowhere to be found at the time. AMD made a mistake not releasing the 5870 with more than 1GB of VRAM. This is moot now though with the huge, arguably excessive, VRAM count seen on modern cards. The 7970 has 3GB of VRAM!! Insane!

Five days from now many of the people buying the 7970 will be going in to it expecting the same. Why wait six months for 15% more performance when I can have a 7970 now ? Some will wait for sure, the true 'fanboys', who just only buy nvidia regardless of performance numbers, price comparisons etc. they won't buy anything else. There were certainly people who did wait on the 480 from this demographic. There were also people who waited on the 480 expecting something special and then got slapped down with somewhat of a turd. They may not be inclined to sit on their hands and wait again.

Myself, I am looking to 'downgrade' from three cards. I want a dual-card setup that is 20-30% faster than my current setup. Having crunched the numbers, a pair of 1300+ core clocked 7970s in Crossfire will deliver that. So I figure I will be going AMD this time out, pretty confident we will see 1300core custom 7970s like the Sapphire Atomic RX 7970 or MSI Lightning 7970 before we see nvidia's flagship release later this year. Suits me fine as I prefer AMD.

I'll buy either, but prefer AMD over nvidia. Sort of my point, there are more buyers that will buy whatever is available and performs than care about the brand name. Why wait 6 months for 15% when you have a kickass card here now. :thumbsup:

That's the kind of attitude I'd expect from anti-vaccers, 9/11 truthers, and creationists. Not hardware enthusiasts.

Those are people that hold irrational beliefs based on falsehoods.

I assure you my troubles with ati cards were quite real. Never had those issues with nvidia cards. I trust my own experience. It's not just about benchmarks.

lol.

They are people who hold irrational beliefs based on outdated evidence and antiquated, obsolete theories. Just like you.

Your ATI experiences are anecdotal (valid, but limited), and I had the same poor experiences on ATI prior to my 5870. I've had even worse experiences with Nvidia drivers going from an 8800GTX onward to Fermi derivatives.

Namely, the worst driver issue of ALL TIME which Nvidia holds:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/warning-nvidia-19675-drivers-can-kill-your-graphics-card/7551
Not to mention, with Fermi the waning quality of Nvidia drivers got even worse.

I'd have to say, today it's doing AMD a disservice to say they're "on par". I think that's the best those loyal to Nvidia can muster, because at minimum, no one with lots of anecdotal experience will agree Nvidia drivers are superior.

Those are people that hold irrational beliefs based on falsehoods.
9/11 truthers hold irrational beliefs? There's enough there with building 7 to not be dismissed outright by any honest, well-read man.

Civilisation 5, Skyrim, Bastion, etc. Steam is a great way to manage games as they get patches automatically, keeps CD keys for reference and you can delete and re-download the entire game at will. Other things like saves going to the cloud are nice.

Another plus the post-Christmas sales are quite amazing compared to retailers and you get the game on day of release with normally a period of pre-loading so it just 'unlocks'. You can also buy games outside it and register the key for the game to show on steam get the benefits too.

So personally I find it a great tool where I tend to buy most of my games from.

This is the original slide, notice Kepler was slated for 2011 ? Since then they've released a new slide that states 2012.

They also said Fermi delays would not delay Kepler, unfortunately it looks like it has delayed Kepler.

Late to the party again. Myself I hope this time the six month delay behind AMD produces more than a 15% performance upward movement from the fastest AMD Radeon avaiable when they finally release a part.

Last time out I bought some nvidia cards just for the 1.5GB of VRAM, this time it will take a real performance masterpiece considering the 7970 has 3GB VRAM and overclocks likes crazy.

Let's hope they don't mess up again and then take another six months on top to get it right.

If you base your posts on camshots of obsolete roadmaps, I can understand why at times you post in conflict with reality:

Now you don't have to post in 2013 about NVIDIA being late with "maxwell"...ain't that nice? :)

So then you agree that NVIDIA was incorrect in its assessments, fell behind on all its projected milestones, and has since released a new, tamer roadmap that hopefully doesn't set them up for the same failures again?

It doesn't mean that NV fell behind with Kepler because of the above two slides, as the first shows Fermi in 2009 and the later in 2010.

NV wants to show the FP64/watt per two year increase from those slides ;)

Fermi was slated for 2009 and was late. Kepler was slated for 2011 and is late. The original slide from 2009 was adjusted to reflect this. The reality is in nvidia's own slides.

Hopefully Kepler is only late because of Fermi's delay having a trickle down effect and is not a problem its self.

Don't talk logic. The reality is right there in the slide.

Despite Nvidia CEO Huang Jen-hsun previously saying that the company is set to announce its new 28nm GPU architecture at the end of 2011 and 22/20nm in 2013, sources from graphics card makers have pointed out that Nvidia has already adjusted its roadmap and delayed 28nm Kepler and 22/20nm Maxwell to 2012 and 2014.

The sources believe that the delay is due to unsatisfactory yield rates of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) 28nm process. TSMC originally expected its 28nm capacity at Fab15 to be available in the fourth quarter of 2011 and was set to start pilot production for its 20nm process technology in the third quarter of 2012.

However, TSMC's other major client Qualcomm, currently, still has not yet adjusted its 28nm process schedule and is set to launch three new products, 8960. 8270 and 8260A using dual-core Krait architecture in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Meanwhile, AMD will follow its original schedule and enter the 28nm era in the first half of 2012. The company's next-generation graphics chips Southern Island as well as Krishna and Wichita processors, which will replace the existing Ontraio and Zacate processors, and will all adopt a 28nm process from TSMC.

Delayed. Why the need to deny reality ? Kepler is/was delayed, facts, please accept them.

Nvidia beats to it's own drum guys. It's here when it's here. That AMD launched "sort of" the 7 series, has nothing to do with Kepler. They are not related. Because one launches does not make the other late, or early. It is what it is.

LOL

What date "did Fermi" launch for the public?
Hint:

What date did the Tesla (T10) launch for the public?
Hint:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2549/21

You you outdated camshoot shows that:
T10 = 2007
Fermi = 2009
Kepler = 2011
Maxwell = 2013.

All dates of FAB-out...google it, it's really that simple.

The new roadmap has:
T10 = 2008
Fermi = 2010
Kepler = 2012
Maxwell = 2014

All launch dates.

Still confused...and insist on using old data despite not knowning what the data shows...and falsely claim that NVIDIA is late (and have been) since 2007?!

Look at the above posts.
Do YOU think Fermi launched 2009...or 2010?

Now that has to be the funniest response/spin I've seen in a long time. You can't be serious. This was from Nvidia themselves. So, it doesn't matter as long as they update the roadmap whenever they fall behind. o_O
