On the forums there is a sticky saying there is a major power outage causing connection problems. It took forever to get the forums to come up.
There is currently a wide spread power outage in Bellevue/Seattle impacting Steam Server availability. Unfortunately ETA for when the power will be restored is unknown as the power company will only work on restoring it once the storm has eased and the high winds have died down.
Any issues you are experiencing with connecting to Steam are only temporary, as this isn't an end-user issue.

Those can be nasty, we had one maybe 4 years ago, winds uprooted even huge, healthy trees. They were down all over the place. I found some pics here...

I have to admit, it is pretty damn stupid that a power outage in ONE city shuts steam completely down.
Is there a way to connect to servers and play a game like CS or TFC without connecting through steam?

It isn't shut down completely. It seems to work for some people, not for others. It works fine for me, even after restarting and reconnecting to Steam multiple times in the last few hours.

I will try the offline mode.
Thing is: I just got hl2 a couple of days ago (yeah, I know its been out for a while) and I was not aware that the damn thing had to connect to the net everytime before I could play. I thought it was a one-time activation thing. Guess I should have checked up on this in detail before I bought the game.
The sad thing is, the game itself isnt all that good. Just hyped up beyond belief...particularly the AI, which is pretty fvcking dumb.

to play single player, you only need to connect once. then if you lose your network connection you can play in offline mode.

So the question I bet a lot of people are wondering: is there a hack to get around the steam authentication?
This timing sucks. Finals just over, last weekend before winter break at university with an awesome connection, and can't play a game I paid for because of Valve's paranoia and incompetence.
