On the forums there is a sticky saying there is a major power outage causing connection problems. It took forever to get the forums to come up.

I couldn't even bring up their forums, or even the support page... this sucks though. :(

There is currently a wide spread power outage in Bellevue/Seattle impacting Steam Server availability. Unfortunately ETA for when the power will be restored is unknown as the power company will only work on restoring it once the storm has eased and the high winds have died down.

Any issues you are experiencing with connecting to Steam are only temporary, as this isn't an end-user issue.

And yes, it takes forever, and many tries just to bring that link up. :D

Yeah, I'm in Vancouver and we had a major wind storm last night which felled many a great tree and caused several power outages.

Luckily I was not effected :D

That's strange, I have played HL2 SP without even being connected to the internet at all before. Can't you just set Steam to offline mode and launch HL2 from there?

I will try the offline mode.

Thing is: I just got hl2 a couple of days ago (yeah, I know its been out for a while:D) and I was not aware that the damn thing had to connect to the net everytime before I could play. I thought it was a one-time activation thing. Guess I should have checked up on this in detail before I bought the game.

The sad thing is, the game itself isnt all that good. Just hyped up beyond belief...particularly the AI, which is pretty fvcking dumb.

The support page (which BTW takes a long time to load) says that I need to first connect  and ensure that my game files are updated before I can enable offline mode.

I tried launching HL@ just by disabling my net connection lol, but it refuses to launch.

bah what a POS.

I have to admit, it is pretty damn stupid that a power outage in ONE city shuts steam completely down.

Is there a way to connect to servers and play a game like CS or TFC without connecting through steam?

Yeah, but the whole "logged into steam" seems to be the problem.

It isn't shut down completely. It seems to work for some people, not for others. It works fine for me, even after restarting and reconnecting to Steam multiple times in the last few hours.

That sucks. I am nowhere near the power outage. I don't undertand how all this works, I guess. :(

to play single player, you only need to connect once. then if you lose your network connection you can play in offline mode. as for multiplayer, you're outta luck until the server come back up.

I cant seem to find the 'offline mode' option.

This (LINK)is the message I get. I dont think you can enable offline mode until you actually get to log-in once more atleast.

I should have probably enabled offline mode after my very first login. But I didnt know about this crap then.

So the question I bet a lot of people are wondering: is there a hack to get around the steam authentication?

This timing sucks. Finals just over, last weekend before winter break at university with an awesome connection, and can't play a game I paid for because of Valve's paranoia and incompetence.
