Stealing

Why do people steal? I mean they know they will get caught. I mean whats the point of someone stealing? Plus I don't see why they don't see its not even worth it. Why not just make it or live without it? If you had everything that would be no good.

A lot of people don't get caught. That's probably why people keep stealing.

Thats not true.

Yeah it is. I work in retail.

The shrink rate is always up because people are always stealing and don't get caught.

Same in most any store you walk into.

Go to any retail store and ask to see their statistics on shoplifting for that month. Tell them you're doing a research study if they ask.

Most retail shrinkage is due to 'inside jobs' and/or poor management of returned items. Discussing theft and its data is tricky business. For example: Amount of theft in retail, versus amount of theft in a restaurant, versus the amount/type of theft in a corporate boardroom.

Ha! I worked at Best Buy in Loss Prevention. But it is all psychological, if you can get something for free and get away with it, what is going to keep you from doing it again? People get greedy. 100% profit. We had three guys who ended up stealing about $20,000 in laptops, but we eventually caught them, because they got greedy. They obviously knew that we had cameras, because they are everywhere. They knew that we saw them. But they kept doing it. One day when i saw them come in. We shut the doors down and called the police, when they walked over to computers they realized something was up. By that time it was too late. They tried to break the door, but the police got them.

My best friend used to do Asset Protection at a Kmart. People would come in to steal bottle after bottle of baby formula for their drug production. I am sure most people figure that if they can do it once, they will never do it again. But afterwards they realize that they got away with it, and they keep doing it. Eventually, everybody will get caught.

Now of course some people may do it and never do it again. But it is like an addiction.

The thing I don't get if these 3 guys were stealing $20,000 in laptops why did you all not call the police when they just started stealing? Makes no sense.

I'm not sure how to prove it on a macro scale, but I now plety of folks who have stolen something and not been caught
