Obviously there's already a fallacy stating "ALL" of them make this... but does anybody know of people who have graduated from Ivy leagues NOT making this kind of money?

Good guess, Paul. My sister is a teacher with a Harvard degree. She's no where near 6 figures. She did have a much better experience finding a job than some other teachers I know.

What's the point of this?

Not that this can't lead to valid discussion....but I'd like to understand the point you're trying to make sooner rather than later

Only ibank or hedge fund analysts crack six figs in the first year.

hm, trying to find some statistics. It certainly does not guarantee anything, the largest effect is in securing that first job and internships. Once you have real world experience and a work history, those will dictate further job advancement.

Huh?

I make more per hour than all the ibank kids that I know (100 hour weeks...always ). The total comp this year is ~130K for the top tier banks.

You are forgetting sub-prime and neg-am mortgage salesmen.

Yeah, if you're quoting mid-tier undergrads working in their first year. Top tier undergrads will crack 150k, mid-tier MBAs might crack 200k, and top-tier MBAs will crack 250k total comp...all within first two years of work. Hell, my cousin (Stanford MBA grad in 3rd year with JPM) cracked 400k after her bonus.

... did you graduate from an Ivy League school?

I was just saying it's good to know I'll (hopefully) be making decent money, even though IU isn't ivy league.

A friend of mine actually made close to six figures before college, so you don't always have to be a college grad, let alone an ivy grad to make six figures. Take Bill Gates too for example lol. He quit college and look at him now.

Few 'entry-level' white-collar jobs, even with a degree from a top-tier college or university, are going to be paying six figures. A degree from the right school can help land a job, but it's unlikely to net you a huge increase in starting pay over other candidates.

Financial services jobs (investment banking, working for brokerages, etc.) do pay that kind of money, but they're very competitive and require you to work an obscene number of hours per week when you're new. Also, many of them are in places with really really high living expenses (like NYC).

Anyone who goes into the public sector would be lucky to make half that, at least early on.

I believe Bill Gates is what is known as a statistical outlier. I would guess the median income of college dropouts is probably far less than $100k.

Of course now someone is going to flame me because their uncle's neighbor's friend dropped out of college and is now a millionaire, and that one example is enough to justify dropping out of college.

My uncle's neighbor's friend's sister's housekeeper's hairdresser's cat dropped out and makes over 100k, that is clearly enough to justify dropping out.

I've heard statistics that what college you went to does not impact how much you make. That is: the average salaries for ivy league and non-ivy league schools are not statistically different.

I've got a couple of degrees from Michigan and work for a top tier ibank.

Working as an ib analyst really isn't that dream job that everyone makes it out to be though... you can make almost the same amount of money doing buy side for a hedge fund.

yes, one of my buddies graduated with a CS Degree. He was making 0$ salary for the first year (jobless). Now he is making about 70k$

another of my buddies graduated with a CS Degree from Northeastern University. She started with 63k$ and quickly got bumped to 69k$ during the first year.

If you're working 100 hours a week, what do you need money for?

So you can retire much earlier than most people? I'm not saying I agree with the mentality, I'm just making a reasonable guess.
