Well I think ive nearly seen em all when it comes to Space scifi tv shows. Any word on new series coming to a channel near you?

I was so angry when they cancelled SGU... hey it may have not been the greatest ever but at least it gave me a fix every week.

Well you're in Luck. FIRE FLY has been renewed and has ALREADY STARTED FILMING!

Haha, just kidding.

There is that new show Continuum but I'm not sure I like it. 10 minutes after the 1st episode starts, they time travel back to present day Vancouver and are stuck there. No need for special effects now, lol.

Go grab you a good scifi book instead. Much better than the crap on TV.

Try:

Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds
Old Man's War - John Scalzi
Leviathan Wakes - James S. A. Corey

And don't bother with Ender's Game lol!

I'm 1/3 the way through Leviathan Wakes and I also recommend it. It's a fast paced, Sci Fi book. Reminds me of the Fire Fly crew actually. I just finished snoozing my way through a tedious fantasy book called The Name of the Wind so it's good to find a book that I can't put down like Leviathan Wakes.

I'm up to the part to the part where they toast Kelly's marines, the ones who saved them with their lives and the Detective just got fired.

My favourite sci fi books are :

Dune
Enders Game
Mote in God's Eye
Ring world

and I think I'll be adding levathan wakes to that list.

Sir, Thank you for providing me with the best 2 seconds of my life, followed by the worst 2 seconds of my life. Someone mentioned babylon 5, havent seen that one yet.... everything else that has been mentioned , however, i have seen. Babylon if my memory serves me was quite big for not having watched it. Imma have to scratch it off my list.

Mote in God's Eye is great. Ringworld could have been but to be honest Larry Niven has much better ideas than he does actual talent at writing.

Another book I enjoyed was Rendezvous with Rama.

I must have read and/or listened to Mote in God's eye 5 or 6 times. Where's the video game? The movie? lol.

And I agree about Ringworld, great concept but once they started exploring Ringworld in the 2nd book, it was very bland. The last two books are 100% forgettable.

I actually want to re-read Rendezvous with Rama, I really liked that book but not the 2nd in the series.

Back when I was a sophmore in Highschool, my english teacher showed the entire class a couple minutes in the first episode.

I had no idea what it was about.

The anime ones I've liked are:
Cowboy Bebop - the best one
Planetes - it's about orbital garbage collectors, cleaning up all the space junk that causes accidents
Ghost in the Shell - Cyberpunk, not space travel, but still really good.

Stargate Atlantis special effects were amazing for a tv show. Especially when you compare them to the current effects on Syfy.
Here's some good space battles. Turn off the sound, its awful

The effects may be dated, but I've always loved the babylon 5 space battles.
there's something about the way they modeled inertia effects, the ship aerobatics, and the choas of a bunch of fighters dogfighting between large capital ships that just tickles my pickle:

yeah it looks like they avoided what most people do when they mimic the aerodynamics of an airplane like star wars did. I liked that about Battlestar Galactica (the newest one), the way they didn't have sound etc.

My problem with Babylon 5, I could never get into it, was, I thought it was one long boring soap opera with a few special effects. Reminded me of Deep Space 9, hated that show.

Ah yes, almost forgotten about BSG. I also liked the battles in there... if only the camera was a bit more steady. The "amateur with a camcorder" style really didn't fit well into the series IMO, especially since it was mostly limited to the space scenes.

Strange, I loved B5, but could never get into DS9. I dunno, I just found most of the storylines in DS9 shallow or boring, even when the series picked up with the dominion war.

Does Firefly get better...watched the first 10 minutes of it and it put me to sleep.

I assume you're watching in the DVD order and not "The Train Job" which is what Fox showed as the pilot during the show's TV run. Watching "The Train Job" first run put me to sleep too, and I didn't return to it until the DVDs were released. I think that was actually the weakest episode of the series.

Firefly's very well worth it IMO.

The Orphanage series by Robert Buettner is very good too. (Ugh - couldn't think of the name and it was driving me crazy)
