So I recently switched from a commissions job in one field to a commission based sales job in another. This was my first week and basically today I was working without the manager there. There were two other workers with me, and essentially I had the highest sales for the day. I sold 3, while the guy who's been there for almost a year sold 2 and the other new guy sold one. The other new guy has been with the company now for about 3 weeks and knows just about everything.

Now onto the problem. Everytime I had the sale closed and finalized the guy whos been there for a year says he has to put it under his name cause Im still in training and the commission would not count for me anyways. I reply by saying that the rest of the stuff count towards my comission, why wouldnt this, hes like this is a contract sale it wont count and all of comission would go to the manager anyways and proceeds to put it under his name (both times, and I can't really stop him because he is basically the supervisor while the manager is gone).

At the end of the day he comes up to me and says we will talk to the manager and say that I only "helped" him on the sales. Im like I close ALL THREE OF MY SALES with out his help. Only time I needed his help was when I was putting it into the system and getting there contracts ready.

So now tomorrow Im working with just the manager in the morning on monday and I think I'm going to have a talk with the manager. Now I dont want to get the other guy fired, but I think I should tell the manager everything that happened. Having basically ZERO sales for the day would make me look really bad, and he might get a bad impression.

What would u guys do? Talk to the manager or let it go? Also one thing is one of the customers was a return customer from a previous day of my training and she had spoken to me and the manager before (actually I was trying that sale a couple of days ago and the manager came in to help me close, and she said she'll be back in a couple if she went that route).

Cliffs notes:
-New commissions based (comm + base pay) job started exactly a week ago
-sold 3 contracts 2day
-coworker takes the sales and says it wont count for me and the manager would take them if he doesnt
-makes me look bad to the manager because it shows that I didnt sell
-should I have a disscussion with the manager about this tomorrow morning?

EDIT - Just wanted to add that while the manager told me at the beggining that nothing would count he since said I would be getting the commissions but I am in training. and I'm pretty pissed off right now

UPDATE (Monday Nov. 13th, 2006)

Spoke with the sales manager this morning, and I asked him if what the other salesman did was right or not? I told him EXACTLY how it happened and also I had the other salesmen (the one who started just before me) also tell the manager what happened. He spoke with the guy who took my sales, and the credit is being transfered to me, and he also has to give me three of his sales for the week. This is his first and last warning. Turned out very well for me. Also the reason the manager is making him give me 3 more sales is because he has pulled this ****** before with another person that was being trained at this location about 6 months ago.

I'd definitely bring it up. Just explain you didn't want to get him in trouble, but you were worried you weren't being credited properly.

I would have never let the guy put his name on the sales to begin with but yes talk to the manager and hope he doesnt question your credibility. I've seen places that will alow you two to split the sale depending of course.

Here's what I would have done, I'd call the manager when this co-worker says the sales wouldn't count and clear that crap up right then and there.

Now it's your word against his and he's been there considerably longer. What about the other sales person? Is he aware of what happened and can back it up?

Either way, I'd tell the manager. If the other guy flat out lies, offer to have the manager contact the customer and ask who they worked with for the sale. Have it done in a manner of a follow up call to see if their deal went ok and they were happy with the service. More of a customer service move instead of seeing who did what.

I was fixing to type the same thing. Since you don't get the commission anyhow why should your micro-manager get it? You also need to confirm with your real manager about training = no commission. Training or not you are closing the deal and making money. You should be entitled to the commision.

I would talk to your manager as soon as possible. You made the sales so you should get the credit for it, commission or no commission. If the guy gets fired he probably deserved it. At the minimum the manager should speak to him about his lack of ethics. Then again your manager could be a complete ass and not believe you. If that's the case it sucks for you.

Yup Im going to bring it up tomorrow for sure then. I can have 2 of the sales confirm me by name for sure (they have my business card so when I call them they can read my name and tell my manager how I did). Yes it is my word against his, but I was HIGHLY reccommended from my old employer for this job and my manager can always check out my background if he needs to (he knows my previous manager fairly well and can quickly call and ask if something like this has ever happened before, which it has not)

Definitely bring it up, that crap needs to end now, and that guy needs to disappear. There's no place for a thief like him in a place like that, if that's how he treats his coworkers, just imagine what he says to customers to get them to buy stuff. No doubt he's going to be creating all sorts of problems down the road when customers don't get what they were promised.

Sounds like you got jacked. I would tell the manager that as the new guy you think you got taken advantage of. Explain briefly and let him take it from there.

Don't want to get the guy into trouble? Well, if he is indeed ripping you off, then screw him. Talk to the manager.

You could ask like this: "Hey, I was just wondering... <coworker> told me yesterday that my three sales had to be recorded under his name since I'm still in training. I wondered how will I know when I need to be recording them under my own name."

That doesn't make it sound like you are suspicious, and if your coworker is screwing you, it will be obvious to the manager.

He is screwing you. No doubt--you should steal some of the merchandise to make up for the commission you lost.

...Or just talk to the manager.

Wow who would of thought that someone in sales working on commissions would lack ethics. Are you surpirised that one form of pond scum is eating another for lunch?

Ya man there are a lot of shady sales people. I am as honest, and make sure to let the customers know exactly what they are getting. I am filling the position of a person who recently got fired for lying to customers A LOT.

No biggie, just let it slide. After all, you're relatively new and he's obviously just trying to help you. Give him your lunch and the keys to your car as well.
