Only played a few minutes into the game, started a rogue-like female. Any suggestions? I was going to play through the light side this time through. Do I need to stick consistently to being good? or do you get some exceptions?

Play however you want. If that means strict role playing, do it. If that means "I don't like the way you talk, I'm going to off you!" do it. It's not enjoyable to play a character you can't empathize with.

It's fairly easy to get 100% light and you should be there probably before mid-game if you do all light side choices, so if you go dark a few times it won't matter too much, you can still get back up by the end.

Plan for your future build. You get lightsabers (obviously), so you might want to consider putting your skill things in stuff related to how you will want to saber play (e.g. dual melee wield, single melee wield, 2 handed saber), because it shouldn't be too difficult to do the early game while focusing on your later build.

I tried both Light Side and Dark Side (to both extremes) and I really got bored with the Dark Side character, I prefer helping people and get rewards than just going around in berserk and basically killing everything that moves for the sake of being a Sith. I never tried the Dark Side in KOTOR 2 however, perhaps it's better there, but the goal has to remain the same... either it's KOTOR or not, a Sith is still a Sith, freak of nature bound on killing on order or by pleasure.

Well, KOTOR 1 was very black and white. For light side, the starting planet (Taris) is annoying as you have to be giving away money all the time. Dark side is cartoony evil.

KOTOR 2 was more nuanced. Dark side was actually about gaining power rather than blind psychopathic rage.

Most of the good tips are already layed out.
Like was stated, you will be a Jedi later on, and that means you should put most feats into melee fighting. Dont put any into melee weapons specifically, later you will only use sabers so put points into that when you are able. Critical Strike is the best for newbs, because it doesnt reduce your chance to hit. Dont put feats into things that boost skill points. Use your allies for skills. When you get to the end game and are alone, skills wont matter too much anyway. It really doesnt matter too much if you go light or dark, but light gives you the better ending. Whatever you pick just stick with it, because the amount of force points you need to use a given ability goes down if you are aligned with it.
For instance, heal and most protection powers go down in FP usage when you are mostly light sided.
Force Lighting and direct damage powers are cheaper when you are mostly dark-aligned.

Soldier and then Jedi Guardian are the easiest for new players. Mostly because they have assloads of hit points, plenty of feats, and a strong attack bonus. If you dont level up all the time on Taris, then you will be able to gain more levels and consequently more force powers when you arrive on Dantooine. But if you dont level up you wont be able to beat Bendak Starkiller in the Arena on Taris. He's tough and beating him gives you lots of money and a nice pistol.
Theres about a hundred more tips I could give, but I would rather you explore the game yourself and have fun.

MOST IMPORTANT TIP!!!!
Save often. Do quicksaves after every battle and do full saves upon entering each new area.

There isn't much sneaky stuff for the player to do so rogue then consular might not be the best choice, scout then sentinel might be better. You still get more force powers and skills as a scout-sentinel than as a soldier-guardian.

My only advice is to GTFO out of this thread and any other KOTOR related material as someone will invariably drop spoilers on you! Don't read the internet until you beat kotor 1 at least.

Oh, one tip: don't level up until you have to.
Because of the way the game mechanics work, you can kind of cheat by having enough xp for the next level, but not actually leveling up, and then if you find yourself in a boss fight and low on health, you can level up then and you will get your health restored to max without having to waste turns using medpacks.

I got a great tip, don't beat kotor 2 then go back and play part 1, as I am doing right this very minute. I played part 2 a couple years ago, as I was needing some SW gaming in my life, and after hearing about all the praise people give to kotor 1, I thought I will play this to hold me over until swtor is finally released in like the next 2 years or something. Any way, I have already quit 2 for weeks at a time only to talk myself into giving it another try. It's just that with today's graphics, it's hard for me to get and stay submersed in the story (which is really good by the way).

KOTOR 2 is definitely unique. A lot of Star Wars works have focused only on the black & white. Even the light side isn't as crystal clear.

Especially on Taris. It's best to do so later in the game once you have access to force powers, as you'll be able to gain more.

When I play, I usually start out as the Scoundrel then upgrade to a Jedi Sentinel later. If you want to play the canon game, play as male light side. The canon story was added after it was released but the game's story seems to make more sense to me when played that way.

KOTOR has one of the biggest spoilers of all time. Seriously, don't risk it -- stop reading these threads. ;)

There are romances, though, if you want to switch your character's sex for that purpose.

I've played part of one several times, even have a current saved game on the jedi planet. Never seem to get much further past that point as even though I now have my saber the things you find out wandering on the planet seem well prepared for one schmuck walking around with a saber.
