Most of the good tips are already layed out.
Like was stated, you will be a Jedi later on, and that means you should put most feats into melee fighting. Dont put any into melee weapons specifically, later you will only use sabers so put points into that when you are able. Critical Strike is the best for newbs, because it doesnt reduce your chance to hit. Dont put feats into things that boost skill points. Use your allies for skills. When you get to the end game and are alone, skills wont matter too much anyway. It really doesnt matter too much if you go light or dark, but light gives you the better ending. Whatever you pick just stick with it, because the amount of force points you need to use a given ability goes down if you are aligned with it.
For instance, heal and most protection powers go down in FP usage when you are mostly light sided.
Force Lighting and direct damage powers are cheaper when you are mostly dark-aligned.
Soldier and then Jedi Guardian are the easiest for new players. Mostly because they have assloads of hit points, plenty of feats, and a strong attack bonus. If you dont level up all the time on Taris, then you will be able to gain more levels and consequently more force powers when you arrive on Dantooine. But if you dont level up you wont be able to beat Bendak Starkiller in the Arena on Taris. He's tough and beating him gives you lots of money and a nice pistol.
Theres about a hundred more tips I could give, but I would rather you explore the game yourself and have fun.
MOST IMPORTANT TIP!!!!
Save often. Do quicksaves after every battle and do full saves upon entering each new area.
