It looks awesome and I would love to have a device with this form factor but it is missing too many key components. I would gladly pay the $800 for a device like that but it would need to run office (not the full gamut, but I would like to be able to open a word or excel document), play flash of course (although I'm pretty sure this is coming for the ipad), have an sd slot and usb slot (leaving this off was just ridiculous), and if I was assured that 3rd parties could program for the device without going through Apple so that divx/xvid etc players would start to appear on it. If I could easily plug it into any computer (without worrying whether I have the special cord to use) and easily transfer and store any file on it, then the device would be worth it. The device has the potential to be a really incredible and useful tool, but it has been neutered to I assume lock control over where and how you get your media content.

And I don't give 2 flips about the bookstore. If this can be used for textbooks then I definitely see potential, but I like holding a real book in my hand for casual reading.

In a couple of years, people will be out buying the iPad 3. And there's a good chance that that will be a far superior device for a lot less money. That's the way Apple does things. Just because the 3rd iteration of the device is solid doesn't mean this one is any less crap.

You have to start somewhere. Releasing the iPad now will generate SOME amount of revenue for them to continue funding the project onto future iterations. If they hold off now then in 3 years you could still rattle of 10 features it doesn't have, should they just never release it a-la Duke Nukem Forever? It does what it does very well, which makes it "fully-baked" in my mind. Half-baked would be features that don't work well and are thrown in just to be listed as features.

After watching the Keynote, and subsequent videos floating around, I think this device is pretty good.

You can compose something in Pages, PDF it, and email it to someone. There is an underlying file system accessible across applications. It can be seen as a remote drive from desktops. It connects to bluetooth keyboards. Other than Usenet, I hardly do anything heavier than surfing the web and listening to music on my personal laptop (work is different of course). Once devs start writing iPad specific apps the full functionality will be realized.

This would actually be pretty cool due to the cost and size. The only feature I wish it had was handwriting recognition/stylus input so I could replace my notepads (kind of like the courier demos). I probably won't pick one up for the first few months until potential hardware issues are hashed out, but I could see getting the 16GB WiFi only sometime in 2010.

There's a difference, and whether or not you know it, the Apple execs certainly know it. It has nothing to do with features being "half baked" and everything to do with them manipulating people into buying a new one.

I go back to my old iPod example. Do you really think it took them almost a decade to "bake" an FM radio? Hell no. They just wanted to give you a reason to buy the new Nano when you already had one that still works.

Same with the iPad. All the crap that this thing is missing, I'm sure it will slowly be added into version 2, version 3.....and by then maybe they'll actually have a good, somewhat fully-featured product. And you'd better believe the Mac drones that bought the first version will upgrade.

That aside, you talk about "you have to start somewhere" and all that. Yea, you do...and where they're starting sucks. Maybe the future ones WILL be really good - but what does that have to do with how lacking THIS model is?

I keep looking at this thread & shaking my head.

This isn't a computer for the tech geeks, there's lot's of stuff out there already, and more to come.

This is a computer for that father in law you would have recommended buy a Dell and then realized you're going to have to help them install printer drivers and Windows updates every month or so.

This is the computer soccer moms are going to jam into their purse.

This is the computer seniors are going to drag out at AARP meetings.

This is a computer for all those assholes that tried to touch my LCD screen to click on a link when LCD's became popular.

This is the computer I'm going to buy because eTrade has a really good app for the iPhone and will look amazing on the iPad.

This is the computer that may let me go back to a traditional cell phone, because honesty, I have always hated surfing the web on a postage stamp sized screen.

Any of you that have tried to use a full blown desktop/laptop OS on a pure tablet know what the problems are. I thought I was a retard for hating my Dell XT tablet till I started reading the forums on it and people were ranting about how there needed to be a class action suit against Dell for selling such a massive piece of shit... The HP tablet is going to suffer a similar fate, desktop/laptop OS's do not work well on a tablet.

Any of you that have clicked on a fucking 2mm link on a smart phone screen intuitively know smart phones can use the web, but the form factor & execution suck...

I own 3 Apple products, an Apple BT keyboard, a Magic Mouse hacked to work on my W7 HTPC, and a 1st gen iPhone (which I need to get off my ass and list on eBay since I use a heavily modded HTC Dream with a Cyanogen ROM to take advantage of TMobile's 3G since I'm a long time TMobile customer) I'm an Apple investor, but honestly, I trade stocks actively and will likely move on to other stocks soon, I'm not a buy and hold kind of investor...

As I posted earlier, I'm going to be linking back to this thread in the coming years and laughing, a lot...

I like it. Sure it is missing a lot of features but if it would just add multitasking and flash I would buy one now. As it is I'll likely wait until later this year and see what they are selling for second hand around the holiday season.

The "problem" Apple has is they are releasing one device.
There are already 9" tablets, 10" netbook tablets, 4 to 7" Internet tablets which run Android or Windows CE.

That's also why the hype makes no sense.
Apple are releasing one product, it fits into a (kinda maybe finally) emerging market, but it's a market where everyone has a different view of a) what's useful and b) what they want.

When Apple entered the mp3 player market with the iPod, they made an mp3 player. An mp3 player played music, it could fit in your pocket. That was what it competed with.

The iPad competes with everything from smartphones to netbooks and everything that's inbetween. It doesn't have a market segment to "invent", it doesn't exist in a clearly defined ecosystem with a clearly defined purpose, it exists in a market which is likely to explode with devices, and already has a wide variety of offerings even before the iPad is out, and they aren't all comparable devices.

The iPad is one among many, as was the iPhone and the iPod, but the many isn't clearly defined, which makes it hard to say "it's doing well in this market", because the market is all over the place. It's hard to know what to compare it to.

And I would call it a device, not a computer. Most people when they think computer think personal computer, a laptop or a desktop. It's not a computer as the general public conceives a computer. It's a large iPod Touch, and no one would call one of them a "computer".
Even Apple didn't call it a Mac, which is what they call their computers.

Playing semantics is a moron's game. Who really cares? By a broad definition, it's definitely a computer, if you're in the industry, it's something else.

As far as Android tablets, Arcos is the only one I'm aware of, and Google isn't too thrilled about how Arcos has implemented the Android OS, and the reviews aren't good. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology/2009/10/16/archos-fixes-android-tablet-woes-115875-21752600/

I don't understand your points about the iPad's market or whether it's going to do well, Apple releases quarterly earnings with numbers of devices sold, it won't be like Amazon who won't officially release the number of Kindle's sold, or Google who won't release the number of Nexus One's sold.

Here's a press release of Apple's Q1 results: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/01/25results.html 2nd paragraph:

The Company sold 8.7 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 100 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 21 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
That's just the press release, the actual quarterly statement shows specifics, breaks down by iPod models, etc, they're pretty transparent as for as unit sales.

It will be pretty apparent when they start reporting sales figures for the iPad.

The other funny things I notice about tech, is that as far as sales, everyone takes a moronically narrow view of sales figures, Apple's international market share made for 52% of it's total sales, Nokia & RIMM are discounted quickly with everyone focusing on US sales. RIMM & Nokia have massive sales outside of the US.

Also, the other "everyone knows this" issue is that "the market for mobile devices is so small" even in the US, the portable wireless market is fucking massive, think internet bubble massive....

Don't worry, we'll be doing the same thing. This thing is going to replace the DSi and PSP as the ultimate portable gaming system according to you. LOL

Epic Fail is coming your way.

I gotta ask what you do for a living & how old are you If youw don't want to post it, send me a PM...

I'm not going to slam you, I'm just curious... I'm a tech investor, and I'm curious as hell, and surprised as hell over people's reaction to this thing.

As I've said I don't use an iPhone or have a Mac (I did buy a used Macbook for my 20 year old daughter, and I have a first gen iPhone but use a modded HTC G1 every day and tether it to a Dell Mini 9 with W7) Have always been a Windows/Intel/AMD person, and have owned stock in virtually all the big players at one time or another, just happen to be an Apple stockholder at the moment...

While funny, I have an iPhone that fits in my pocket and a macbook that fits in my messenger bag.

the iPad won't fit in my pocket like the iPhone, and if I'm already bringing a messenger bag to fit an iPad I might as well bring my MacBook.

Thus, iPhone + MB > iPad

So, since you're already a happy Apple investor, let's put it this way

Apple has already hustled me into owning a MacBook and an iPhone (good for you). Now, assuming I have both, where the fuck does an iPad fit in? See above train of thought.

As others have said, I can only see this working on people who don't know a goddamn thing about computers or have assloads of money or hardcore apple fanboys.

These comments are reserved on this version of the iPad only, I'm sure iPad 3gs will be sick (lol)

See, that's actually a whole lot of people... now extrapolate that to the rest of the world, and it's a gazillion people or so...

I have thought about it a little more and realized something. There is one thing they could do that would push me over the edge, put magazines on it. If I could get motor trend, automobile, car and drive, and all my tech mags on it I would buy it in a heartbeat. I want originals, advertisements and all. If they did that with the quality of their ebook app I will break out the debit card. I couldn't careless about newspapers, you can get the news from a million web sites. Mags would set it apart from the kindle and really put its color screen to use.

Will gazillion people drop down 5 bills on such a device?

I guess only time will tell.

if there's a niche for the ipad as an e-reader, I think it's definitely going to be in magazines, comic books, and manga.

What I don't understand is why this hurts your feelings so much. You seem to be taking this thread so damn personal. Just because you own Apple stock doesn't mean we're making fun of YOU because of the iPad, believe it or not.

Its amazing, I have a few friends that were never big mac fans, until they bought their stock, and now they're even worse than the Apple fanboys when it comes to this stuff. Meanwhile, the friends of mine that ARE legitimate Apple fanboys are incredibly disappointed by the iPad.

Seriously, you aren't even arguing the virtues of the device...if I wanted to get technical, I'd point out that you're going to have trouble helping your dad install his printer on this too, and that you're insane for thinking the average senior is going to buy one of these, or that the average soccer mom can afford one to "shove into her purse". However, if I did those things, you would just end up more butthurt that someone is daring to insult your company's products. Relax.

LOL, I'm not upset, I just don't understand all the hate.

I've got a couple of bets floating around Gadget Gear & Phones, I'll extend that offer to you...

$499 says Apple sells 3 million of these in the first year they're available. The numbers to be reported from Apple's quarterly statement, the quarters to start the first full quarter the iPad is available for sale.

My dad died 11 years ago, I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't refer to him. He was my best friend.

haha oh god, don't bother with that. I'm sorry in your little contrived list of examples you said "father in law" and in replying I interpreted it as "father". You seriously turn everything in this thread personal. I don't, so you aren't going to make me feel bad.

I'm not going to bet you, what is that going to prove? Are you trying to show your great tech stock mastery by offering a fairly high bet over something completely trivial? Here's a tip, bud...I don't really give a shit how many of these things Apple sells, unlike you, I don't take this discussion as an affront to my soul. Plus, I already said they'll likely sell plenty - there's a lot of idiots out there that like to waste their money on overpriced junk.
