I think your bigger problem is that you are being forced to buy $2 coffee.

Have you been kidnapped? Don't say anything, just blink twice and I'll go get help.

I used to drink MCD coffee every morning until I realized the free single cup serving coffee at work tastes better, served quickly and costs nothing.

Starbucks is only a place to go when you are out with people and you want a small diversion.

My son ran cross country this fall and the Mrs. and I would stop by starbucks and get a couple caramel macchiatos on the way to the xc meet. It can get cold out there and the coffee was a great complement to the chill in the air, plus, it woke us up.

Go to Dunkin Donuts. It's cheaper and it tastes better. The only thing is that it's not trendy but nobody will scoff at you for having an Android phone.

As a New Englander I am probably committing sacrilege by saying this, but literally everything about Dunkin Donuts sucks. The food is horrible. The donuts are god awful. And the coffee is weaker than weak. It is the place to go if you like a glass of sweet cream with a splash of brown water.

Now I'm not saying Starbucks is the best, because it is not (local places near me serve better coffee/espresso for less). But it is better than Dunks at every aspect of the coffee house experience, and considering how many stores it has it is pretty impressive how uniform their drinks taste from shop to shop (Occassional bad barista excepted). FWIW - I rarely if ever drink SB's speacialty drinks. But when I do go there I usually go for black iced coffee or, if its a rough morning, a black iced americano (coffee+espresso).

As for dunks not being trendy - that is probably true if you live south of Connecticut. Up in New England you would think Dunks is a religion from the way most people revere it. Perhaps it was good at one time. But it is just awful now. New Englanders seem to have a fondness for juding restaurants based on what they used to be instead of what they are now. Kelly's Roast Beef is another awful restaurant that just about every New Englander raves about.

Those of us in the Merrimack Valley region of Mass know that the coffee pecking order is (best to worst) Heav'nly Donuts, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks. Starbucks is good for when you want a cappuccino or latte, but they suck for just a good old cup of coffee.

No you are right, all of their food is terrible, including the donuts. I don't drink coffee that much so I don't really care where its from, but the food at DD is horrible.

For coffee however, I think I'd rather spend $500 on a good espresso/coffee maker just so I don't have to stop in at a store every day. Even a drive through every day would bug the hell out of me. In the long run the money saved is great too, but keeping me away from all those people in the morning would be PRICELESS.

Worth every penny.

In less than a year it's paid for itself.

I don't mind. The only time I get Starbucks is when I'm at a book store or on vacation. I brew my own. It would get expensive to rely on "fast food coffee" every morning.

Most of the time, I'm not really satisfied with their regular coffee, it tastes watered-down, and it doesn't start out hot enough. McDonald's regular on the other hand, once it finally cools down, is great, imo.

Let me get this straight, you say Starbucks is watered down but McDonalds is ok?

You can call Starbucks a lot of things...burnt, bitter, expensive, yuppie-swill...ect. But it's most certainly not watered down. Especially in comparison to McDonalds. Starbucks arguably brews one of the strongest cups of coffee you can easily acquire.

What are the good espresso machines? We got my sister what apparently is a "good" one per reviews, was a few hundred bucks, and it has to be serviced every few months because something is broken. It's all covered under warranty, but the hassle alone makes it not worth it to have your own machine from what I've seen. If I was a coffee person I'd be absolutely furious at how often I couldn't make the fancy brews I paid for.

I was in Boston several months ago.

They need an intervention there.
While walking around the Boston Common, just out of curiosity I checked the GPS for Dunkin Donuts nearby. There had to be more than 20 of them within a half mile.

Some people don't get why the Boston Tea Party was something even worth being recalled in history. ("It's just tea, what's the big deal?") The British should come over and dump Dunkin coffee into the harbor. Nukes would be on their way to London within two minutes.

For me, it's at airports when traveling for work. There's always a Starbucks there.

I used to work at a place where the executive floor got their own top-of-the-line espresso machine that cost a couple grand. Something broke about every three months. They ended up trading it on a rental unit so when it broke, the rental place would bring another one the same day. And that one broke a lot also. I guess it's just the nature of the thing.

Posting in another "JEDI is shocked and dismayed by inflation" thread.

I think I've come to terms with the fact that things will pretty much always get gradually more expensive for the rest of my life.

I grew out of sippy cups when I was 4. :p

Do you drink your store-bought coffee through the lid? Or do you take the lid off?

Many travel mugs are atrocious - I will give you that. But you can find ones that are quite good in the lid.

Still, a mediocre travel mug and home brewed coffee is a very legitimate and substantially cheaper alternative to store-bought coffee.

McD's coffee is fine with me. Don't care for SB as I find it too bitter. It may be great coffee, but my brain associates the taste with the coffee that has been on the burner much too long.
