USA Today

" a $1 cup of Starbucks coffee.

With free refills, to boot.

Who'd a thunk? That's 7 cents less than the average price of the smallest cup of Premium Roast coffee at McDonald's.

Starbucks has never sold any coffee or non-coffee beverage for $1, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil says.

So, why do it now? "We're always looking at ways to connect with the customer," she says.'

i think this cheapens the starbucks brand.

starbucks was never about price.

I can see this being a fiasco if it goes national.

What do u think?

Starbucks was always about price. How could it possibly be about taste?

Even for a buck I'd rather grab a cup of joe from McD's. At least that doesn't taste like burnt battery acid.

Starbucks is nearly undrinkable to me.

This must be a reaction to McD's plan to take Starbuck's down. Probably not a bad time to short SBUX.

"i think this cheapens the starbucks brand."

I don't think anyone buys Starbucks coffee because it's fashionable to walk around with a cup with the Starbucks logo on it, so I really don't think that's a big deal.

it's the 3x amount of caffeine in their regular coffee that brings people back.

That's basically when I get SB - when I need a giant caffeine rush and the swill in the office just won't do.

I like the ambiance for sitting around and drinking coffee or studying. One dollar for a cup sounds fantastic to me.

Is this similar to how a crack dealer offers first time/new users a lower price to get them addicted?

They built more stores than there are yuppies to fill. So now they gotta appeal to the bottom feeders. Plus the economy is slowing.
It's going to damage the brand.

Lowering the price to $1 might or might not be a good idea, but IMO Starbucks biggest problem is being seriously over-priced for the size of the serving you get so its a step in the right direction at least.
