No, the newers ones are a Prequel, takes place before the original 3, if you watch the newer made ones first then watch the old ones, it will all make much more sense for you.

But then you totally lose all sense of surprise at "shocking" revelations, etc.

Watch them in the order they were made.

4, 5, 6

Then, as someone suggested, skip 1 & 2 and watch 3. :beer:

Bah. The originals made plenty of sense by themselves for 20 years. They might even make LESS sense now that the prequel trilogy is out (not that I didn't enjoy them, but there are undeniably continuity problems).

Here is the thing... they are great movies, but they are only movies. You aren't going to ruin your experience by watching them in the wrong order. If I were going to watch them for the first time, I would probably go 1-6 in order. However, there would be nothing wrong with watching 4-6, and then watching 1-3.

Watching 4-6 alone tells a very different story than the whole series tells, so that is why I would watch them in order. You will take a drop in the quality of visual effects, but not by much. The effects in 4-6 really stand the test of time, IMHO, plus they have been remastered to include some cool eyecandy. The acting in 4-6 is far superior to the acting in 1-3.

Either way you do it, I hope you enjoy the experience.

the originals are far the best imho. but they were made to be watched in order from 1 to 6 and soon to 9. even if the 1st 3 aren't the greatest films they should still be watched first to understand the story

How are they "made to be watched 1-6"? There are not going to be any more, Lucas has confirmed it. And, despite his later claims, he did not "plan" the prequels in the early 70s. Frankly, if someone had showed me 1 and 2 first, I would not bother watching the rest.

Um, where do you get that he did not plan to make prequels? I thought he made that pretty clear when the first episode was called 4 and not 1, but maybe thats just me 😉

Lucas didn't do number in the late 70s becuase there was no feasible way to get the shots he needed, hell we reshot some of the stuff for the SE of 4-6. the story flows from 1-6, watch them in order and it will make sense. yes, that means sitting through 1-3, 3 i thought rocked arse and the best one since ep 5. imho, my favs are 5, 3, 4, 2, 6, 1

The "prequels" were never originally intended to be made, the original theatre broadcasts did not title them 4, 5, & 6.

He had a general story completed that would not fit into one movie. That became Star Wars, which was not originally called ANH. Even during filming of ESB things got changed around a lot and the nature of family relations, shall we say, was decided during filming. After the success GL did talk about how he envisioned 6, 9, or even 12 (in various interviews). But to claim that Episodes 1-3 were in his mind during the creation of the first three, or even the plot developments for the first three being planned ahead of time, would require absolute fanboy naivety. This is all well-documented, and you can look at sites like theforce.net where people have assembled interviews and other pieces of evidence over the years.

As far as any more movies, Rick McCallum has made it quite clear (since GL likes to be elusive) that the only official SW thing coming to screen is a television series set between 3 and 4 that is now being developed. There are no plans to do any more pre-prequels or things occurring after ROTJ. In fact, they have clearly said "No" (although that could of course change in the future).

Well since the main characters in the prequels were devised after the first Star Wars that is not a very meaningful statement 😉 He may have said "this is the middle of some story" and had some thoughts about the rise of the Empire but what does that really demonstrate? Lucas admits that he thought the movie might be a total bomb -- there is no way he thought he was going to get even 3 movies out of it, even if he did have more elaborate material that never made it into SW.

Also, the book "Spinter of a minds eye" was going to be episode 5 if ANH bombed. Thank god it didn't because that book sucked more than the new 3.

Worst advice EVAR!!! If he watches Episode 1 first he won't watch any of the others.

Start with Episode IV.

Warning-If you don't care for Sci-Fi you probably won't like any of the Star Wars movies. The early ones are campy as hell with bad acting and poor effects (by todays standards) and the later ones suffer from horribly bad stories but have decent special effects.
