I picked this one up at launch, it was my first MMO.

I played it for I think 2 years, it was really good....then they turned it into garbage.

Its been I think 4 years now since I logged in, I'm surprised its still around to be honest, lol.

At launch though I loved the crafting system, I had my character a pure crafter / miner / merchant and loved it.

SWG Pre CU was awesome,WoW and other MMORPGs could not touch it back then ,sad that NGE has made SWG ghost MMORPG ,I don't think it'll be that long before it closes down.

lol SWG the devs do strange things to the game... usually ones that people playing it doesnt like... in pursuit of a mythical audience... and then they wonder why SWG is the most controversial mmo ever

Just downloaded and logged it to the game under my 2 old accounts. Wow, This game is pretty boring. I also don't like how they screwed up my characters. 1 character that i pretty much mastered most of the professions only shows that im a elder marksman lol.

it turned into garbage the first year with the jedi unlock grindfest.

I had it for about 6 months then because of my wookiee is totally useless in pvp with everyone else getting those 90% kinetic armor while me getting none I just simply quit.

the crafting was fun though, I used to take mining just enough so I could place my large harvesters to collect the good metals for money.

I played for a while at launch. The crafting side of things was fantastic, but as it lacked substantial content for the adventurers it was really an incomplete game.

Even before the "armageddon" patch (NGE), people were leaving in pretty large numbers.

I agree with the prenge wasn't so hot either crowd. I got in on the beta for it and laughed when they said they were ready to go to release. For playing/fun factor if still felt way behind in development.

Thats true, prof grinding was a silly way to unlock.

It was so hard for me to keep my master architect / armorsmith and still grind combat.

We (the crafters) broke the game. Or I guess a lack of foresight on the part of the devs allowed us to break it.

There was dev post years ago that basically admitted they never expected people to horde the best crafting materials, instead they thought we'd all make do with whatever was spawning at the moment. The result is that towards the end of my two-year stint as an armorsmith I was using some materials that were well over a year old to make items that were never supposed to exist (90% armor, in this case). It also locked out new players from taking up serious crafting, since you needed those ancient materials to compete.

We were never supposed to have armor that mitigated 95% of incoming damage, buffs that allowed special abilities to be spammed with no consequence, and weapons that hit nearly as hard as they did.

It'd be interesting to see how much more interesting combat in SWG would have been if we hadn't been able to macro our highest damage attack on repeat and just stand in front of a krayt dragon until it fell over.

Well, for some reason a few people here at work just started back up and got me going this weekend. I played the game at open beta and a couple months after release. I knew back then it was going to bomb and jumped ship. At the beginning I was one of those that maxed out Creature Handler and was running around with multiple Rancors, AT-ST's, and a squad of troopers. My character didn't have to do anything in the game. I could sit in an area and watch my pets literally dominate anything in the game. Of course that was way too over the top in power so the first thing nerfed in the game was the CH. Nerfed so hard to the point the class was near useless if I remember correctly. Cancelled my sub right then and there. I hate over nerfs.

Since then, ever SOE product I've played has done the same and I've been boycotting SOE like EA for various reasons. But for some reason, I took the free 14 day trial and I am actually having fun in the game right now. For me, it's the long Legacy quest and the piloting of space ships that is fun.

Now, I have no clue if what Wheelock was talking about is still in the game. If it is, it wouldn't surprise me at all because I remember watching a friend a few years ago playing a Tera Kasi and macro killing the hardest monsters in the game solo. So I know that stupid overpower crap like that still existed at that time. I hope the devs went through at some point and just cleaned house on the database removing all that junk for better balanced items.

I do know the leveling is MUCH nicer now and nothing feels like grinding at all to me. At least on the combat side of things.

google swg emu

Before people start getting pissed about me posting an emu

SOE and the SWGEMU team had a meeting a few years back and SOE decided to let them work on their project without fear of being prosecuted.

The SWGEMU is the old combat system. You must purchase the game to play.

Its almost finished also.

we killed a krayt dragon the first week by spamming underhand with a bounty hunter, using a CDEF carbine... good times *sniff sniff*

ohh and you should see my friend in action with his double sliced vibro hammer. he kills turrets like crazy.

People still play.. that's crazy. I played for about a year after its release. back in the day before the vehicles were introduced you had to run your ass everywhere.
I do miss starting fights with rebels when the empire was outnumbered 5:1 on the server I was on. they'd show up to the starport with a TEF above their head and we'd open fire on them.
The game was messed up from the beginning though.. gun figher's skills wouldn't work.. somehow the republic blaster was as strong if not stronger than the sniper rifle. the 90% kinetic kit was crazy and the abilities between two professions would stack so you wound up with a person with 110% chance to dodge incoming attacks. The premise of the game had potential, it just lacked a fair and balanced system.

I played the BETA, then I played at release for a few months until I got bored with it. Then went back a year or so later for about 9 months. That time was the best it was just before the first Jedi re-vamp where they introduced the "village" you went to to become a Jedi. When they did that I quit the game soon after came the CU and the NGE. I went back for a short stint last year and the game was totally nerfed. I had been a Master architect/Master pikeman and had a ton of fun before the CU but now my character couldn't do anything. This game was great at one time but the devs screwed it up bad....

I think the only reason anyone still plays this game is because it's Star Wars. If it was yet another mediocre, generic swords n' dragons MMORPG, it would have been dead long ago.

Actually, that might be enough to get me into an MMO. Normally I hate MMOs?played a little WoW on a friend's account and didn't see the point?but perhaps a well-done Star Wars one set in the Old Republic would get me into it. I generally don't like the medieval fantasy setting. I'm not a gigantic Star Wars fan but KOTOR was fun.

+1 count me in for that. I love SW and would jump at the chance to play a good OR MMORPG.
