Star Wars: Episode 0 (Palpatine's path to Sith)

One wonders if Disney gambled poorly as in Star wars has been overworked to death over the last 20 years and interest will wane, given what they paid Lucas for the franchise it would be a disaster. Then again JJ Abrams has been successful in reviving the Star Trek franchise and turning in a nice profit on both films.

Is there any doubt in your mind that the next string of Star Wars movies will reel in stupendous amounts of cash? Just look at the hundred-and-one reaction videos of the trailer. EP 1 - 3 should have been enough to stop the Star Wars franchise in its tracks, but people are still enthusiastically lining up for another serving.

hopefully Disney reboots episode I,II, and III

They could do an Episode 0 Part I and Part II, where the first goes even further back when Yoda was young and still a student.

While they might do a better job than Lucas did, that's not setting a very high bar. They would basically need to throw out all three scripts entirely and start again, IMO. Even then, what are the chances that some decent actors are going to touch new Star Wars films with a bargepole?

The potential problem (that Lucas demonstrated really well) with prequels is that when the viewer knows that character x is in the films they've seen already, then they know that the character survives and what has to come in the prequels; it basically takes any surprise out of the plot. In EP1 - 3, all of the main characters suffered from this problem. The characters that don't survive basically act as cardboard cut-outs until they're dead. You've got Padme who apparently makes zero difference to anything except have two kids before she dies, and Dooku who was basically a replacement for the previous cardboard cut-out, Darth Maul.

Of course, EP1 - 3 had much bigger problems than this: Bad direction which led to bad acting, and bad scripts which led to worse acting and everything else wrong with those films.

They paid 4B and the most recent teaser alone raised their stock price by 2B. I think it was a steal.

Lucas is a good technical director and cinematographer. However, he's not a competent writer or director. Star Wars only worked as well as it did by some miracle. Empire and Jedi were directed by others. This was also a time when people weren't afraid to ask George "why don't we try it this way instead" without immediately being turned down.

When he started making the prequels, he surrounded himself with sycophants. That only served to magnify his weaknesses as a filmmaker, and we got three awful movies as the end result.

You want an idea of just what it's like to work with Lucas? Watch the making of documentaries on Chrystal Skull. You can see Spielberg is visibly fed up with him and really doesn't want to be there. But he just lets George roll to shut him up. That movie is the result of a good filmmaker trying to make the best out of a bad situation, but not quite succeeding.

The good thing about this time around is Disney is going in with a strong plan. They have every Star Wars film probably for the next decade already drafted out on paper to ensure the universe stays cohesive. Much like they've done with Marvel. George Lucas also has no say in how the films will develop, which is probably the smartest thing they've ever done. Cash grab or no, we're unlikely to get any bad movies out of this. I like that they're going beyond the core story. They just better have Kyle Katarn stealing the Death Star Plans in Rogue One, or I'm going to has a sad. 😛

It was the best investment in the history of investments.
Let's get something straight -- they bought Lucas Arts.

That's A LOT more than just Star Wars. It also the include Indiana Jones IP which they are set to reboot as well.

Star Wars alone will recover their $4B in a few years. Everything after that is gravy. They will reap the benefits of that "minor" investment for decades to come while they basically print their own money.

I think it's a franchise where, as long as the content is good, people will keep having an interest in it.

if they churned out Star Wars: A Holiday Special quality movies for a decade, then I could see a collapse in interest.

You're a hipster if you don't like crap movies that are hated almost universally? News to me.

I'm giving him a hard time since everyone and their mother always seems to excuse the prequels. I didn't mind them and have seen many shows/movies that were given good marks, but I ended up finding them bad.

I'm curious to see what GG will do with VII.

He doesn't really need an origin story. Why can't he just be a bad guy like Darth Maul? Maul needed zero story. In the Star Wars universe, is everyone good until bad things happen to them?

Durrr HIPSTER, DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. 😀

I enjoy the entire series for what it is.

Understanding that the prequels are horrible, pathetic movies doesn't make you a hipster. It just means you aren't a child or a fucking idiot. Shut up, you fucking idiot.

The prequels are universally lauded as pure shit.
I'm not talking about "pure shit in relation to being Star Wars"
I'm talking PURE SHIT of movies.

Please, watch episode II and try to find ONE redeeming quality about it. ANYTHING. (besides Natalie Portman in the midriff shirt)
