Star Wars beyond ROTJ

For over three decades, the Star Wars universe has been expanding. New drama, new adventures, and new revelations have played out in the pages of bestselling Star Wars novels.

Now, a new nine-book series is set to begin with the March 24th publication of Outcast by Aaron Allston. It takes place almost 40 years after the end of Return of the Jedi. The classic characters of the Star Wars saga are now living legends, starring alongside a new generation of heroes in their endless struggle to bring peace to a beleaguered galaxy.

This is the start of the Fate of the Jedi series. StarWars.com and Del Rey Books are making available a downloadable PDF guide that serves as an introduction to this bold new era of Star Wars storytelling for those who have never read a Star Wars novel before or just need a refresher on the current standing of the characters and worlds of the galaxy far, far away. Here's a peek:

The State of the Galaxy: The Clone Wars are distant history. The Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance is a fading memory.

In the four decades that followed the deaths of Darth Vader and the evil Emperor, the galaxy has known only a few scant stretches of peaceful times.

The Rebel Alliance transformed from a revolutionary military force to a legitimate government ? The New Republic ? in a long process as it liberated worlds from the iron grip of the Empire. The Senate was restored. Luke Skywalker rebuilt the Jedi Order.

Then, the Yuuzhan Vong came. A violent species of alien invaders, they destroyed entire worlds in their quest to conquer the galaxy. The New Republic teamed with the shrinking Imperial Remnant to counter this threat, and although the alien menace was defeated, the galactic government was just one of many casualties of this brutal war.

From the fragments of the New Republic emerged the Galactic Alliance, but its attempt to enforce order on a war-weary galaxy proved difficult. Isolationists and independent-minded cultures like the Corellians did not bow down to Alliance rule.

When the Galactic Alliance came under the draconian rule of a fallen Jedi, Jacen Solo, who adopted the Sith guise of Darth Caedus, this tinderbox exploded into the second Galactic Civil War. Violence erupted between the Alliance and a Confederation of worlds wishing independence. The Jedi Order split from the Alliance, going rogue to take down Caedus, slain by his twin sister, Jaina, the Sword of the Jedi.

By the end of this latest conflict, the galactic players were once again rearranged. The Galactic Alliance is still in power, but a new Chief of State has been installed: a former Imperial, Natasi Daala. The Galactic Empire?s influence has grown, as beings everywhere see and appreciate its relative stability and order compared to the shaky years of Alliance rule.

But Daala has never had great love for the Jedi, and their willingness to abandon the Galactic Alliance has given some reason to doubt their reliability or even loyalty. How exactly the Jedi will fit comfortably into this new order remains to be seen...

WTF is this crap? And alien race comes an invade? Yeah, because after you get to the point of building deathstars you'd be afraid of anyone else. Got this in the latest SW.com newsletter and actually read one for once, this is some crazy stuff.

Star Wars has been dead to me ever since Lucas decided to alter the original 3... everything after that doesn't exist in my mind.

The Yuuzhan Vong storyline was actually pretty damn good. Great premise, well thought out...kind of hard to describe succinctly though 😛

That happened in SG Atlantis, Descent Freespace (or was it Wing Commander?), Star Trek...I'm sure someone can go on.

I actually didn't mind it that much, some was a decent improvement. Just thing though if he would have filmed the entire films today with the effects and stuff he could do, god only knows what would come out (although the yodi saber scenes in 2 and 3 were pretty bad ass so there could be some hope)

Amen.

Not that it had to be this way. Lucas had the option of not churning out three shit prequels. Everything from the casting to the script, to the cheesy retro scene transitions, was incredibly average.

Maybe 5 years from now Lucas can revive the franchise by letting Chris Nolan write/direct Star Wars VII starring Christian Bale as Luke and Michael Caine as Obi-Wan.

Agreed. I find it better than the storyline from episodes 4-6. I recommend anyone who enjoys star wars to check out on of the books from the New Jedi Order series. Excellent IMO. I've read every single one of them.

Did Lucas have that storyline in mind from the beginning or did emerge in the 90s or will we ever know?

What's sadder about that sarcastic remark is that it wouldn't be so bad. Nothing against Sir Alec Guiness, but that wasn't the film he was allowed to show his real acting abilities because the movies are okay at best. I thought the pacing of episode IV was tedious. Episode V rocked because the pacing was damn good. All that is because Lucas was only sort of at the helm due to his SAG fiasco.

I really don't think acting or over CG scenes killed the prequels to be honest.
It was the pacing. It would build up one arc, jump to another, before anything suspenseful happened, it would jump to another scene and rinse and repeat. All with those mentioned retro transitions.

As far as troubles with the acting in front of a blue screen, I wouldn't blame the actors. I blame production. Normally people go though great lengths to help everyone feel immersed enough. Somehow, the prequels were so bad at this it was nothing more than line reading. I don't care how talented someone is, nobody can be floored with an actor reading lines.

And while I do appreciate some of the action scenes, ILM couldn't go all out in realism thanks to Lucas. Everything looked pristine. Even battle weary ships looked brand new with cheesy effects to make them look ragged.
Props and costumes looked this way too. Everything looked like an expensive toy, not a weapon or a uniform.

Back in the day I read all the Paul Anderson post-ROTJ Star Wars novels, which were awesome. Great storyline, not sure if it would hit mainstream film though. Han and Leia have kids, who of course go to Luke's Jedi academy. etc. Very cool

The Thrawn series was great but I stopped reading it during the Yuuzhan invasion since the bastards killed off Chewie. 🙁

I also liked a bunch of the Rogue Squadron series.

Really? That was the only story line that I DIDN'T like out of the extended series. It felt like they were stretching to keep the series alive with that story. I trudged through it, but it didn't feel the same as the other books.

...and that's the only period anyone really cares about.

It was refreshing and different instead of just a new character or a new introspective into someone's past - it was an entirely new species! They existed outside of the Force (without getting too technical), etc. I didn't like all the books, but I thought that it was something that could've actually be made into a movie.

Han shot first.. anything else is fucking retarded.

The scene with Jabba at the beginning of IV where he talks to Han, completely frivolous and he looks way different than ROTJ so it just looks retarded and out of place.

While I would agree that it really sort of killed the SW vibe, all the other books had relatively weak plots in comparison.

Only the Thrawn Trilogy is worth much weight, and even that is basically the "scouring of the shire" to the Original Trilogy...good but weak sauce anti climactic.

Obi-wan returns after ROTJ?! What trickery is this?!

I've only read a few, but they are good. The Thrawn series was excellent too.

Hmm.

I'll have to check that out next.

I read the Darth Bane books awhile ago and enjoyed those, but that's all I've ever read in regards to Star Wars books.
