In TNG what ships did Starfleet have that were better than the Galaxy class? I remember them having mostly Excelsiors a few Nebulas and 1 other Galaxy class (until it was distroyed) plus a handful of Ambassadors, New Orlends and some of those Miranda style ones, (Soyuz I think).Originally posted by: RyanSengara

Ummm, in ST-III I thought that the Excelsiur sp? was the new flagship as the Enterprise was being decomissioned. The Excelsiur was bigger, faster, and more powerful than the NC1701
Excelsior was a test bed for transwarp drive, unfortunately it didn't pan out properly.
A constitution class is faster and not as well armed, while the excelsior is significantly slower and has a better armament. It was a trade off pretty much, I don't know. Remember the Galaxy Class starship wasn't the best in TNG, bigger and badder ships were being made.

The Galaxy class was pretty much at the top of the food chain until the Soverign or Prometheus (can't remember which came first) or maybe the Defiant
Basically, before they knew of the Borg, Starfleet believed peaceful vessels geared towards exploration rather than battle, were they way to go, but that radically changed soon after.

The Enterprise C was destroyed 30 yeas before the Enterprise D was launched.

He was bragging about his unproven-technology ship. And it bombed.
That's b/c Scotty broke it
Anyway, the NC1701-B was an Excelsiur class ship so I'll stick with by my original statement![]()
True, but they never mention the Transwarp drive again...
And it is ALL Scottie's fault![]()

Correct. For the Federation, Galaxy class was the best there is (in TNG-timeframe at least). More info here
As good as the Galaxy-class was, the Romulan Warbird was more powerful and bigger.

I don't know, they might not be too far apart. As far as I can remember, whenever the Enterprise wandered into the Neutral Zone (for whatever ungodly reason this time), they always ended up taking a beating from a Warbird because THEY COULD NEVER SHOOT BACK!

Great point! So this would mean that the Enterprise was not the flagship for this period of time, or they had another Enterprise which we haven't heard about, the NCC-1701C+
Ya, but the Warbird was bigger than Galaxy-class. I remember hearing that the Warbird was considered to be the most powerful ship in TNG.

Well, it looks like the "new" "old" Enterprise is the "NX class"

The "old" Enterprise looks similar to his Akira class ship flipped upside down:

The only major flaw of the Akira is its poor shielding. There are many vulnerable points, especially along the nacelle catamarans, which led to the destruction of several vessels during the Dominion War.
Only the Federation would make a battleship with poor shielding as the major flaw. For Christ's sake!

They made a series called Enterprise, set with an early ship and captain, so I guess Enterprise was one of the first Starfleet ships to be commissioned, so it's probably one of the main ships they have. I'd say yes because of that.
