This thread is TLDR, can someone give me a quick thumbs up or thumbs down on this game?

I like it... Best way I can describe is its the wow of eve. I bought it yesterday at release and I wasnt getting server crashes or anything odd, unlike a lot of mmos that I bought at release.Going into not knowing much I think its pretty good and neat how they made it. Its not super complex, there is some strat to it but its not perfect. Then again neither is any mmo and like every mmo things do get boring/will get boring.

Though I was a tad excited to play it part of my inner nerd wet itself with that fact that I was playing a star trek mmo.....

The idea of leveling up and getting new ships sounds awesome (Star Trek fan). Any other opinions on the game?

Seems pretty fluid with the system they got going with leveling. If you are a star trek fan then you ll probably love it. Just remember how complex star trek is and how hard it would be to make a game as great as star trek. So that you don't have huge expectations that it will be exactly like it because realistically that's not going to happen.

I was thinking about using that name but for a later tier ship.

I'll also have to do some reading later on high yield torp, it seems I'm occasionally getting (at least visually) dual fire on more than just after I initially activate the skill.

As for the klingon side, tier 2 pvp is a hell of a lot different than the first. It was mainly about if the klingons could organize themselves enough at the first level then they'd have a slight edge. At tier two with the feds getting access to all 3 types of ships the wider range of powers definitely comes to play.

After flying around with a Constitution refit for several days, I finally decided to specialize - I bought a T2 Science vessel: The USS Daniel Jackson. I'm honestly more surprised it wasn't already taken.

Edit: Woops, broke the page formatting.
Err... you guys do know that there is no restrictions on naming in the game right? You're going to see over 9000 USS Enterprises flying around come the next few weeks all captained by Kirk and Picard.

They did this on purpose. The only unique part of the game is your @globalhandle. Since your captain's name is actually name@globalhandle, you can see that Kirk@playerA is different than Kirk@playerB. No need to reserve names in this game. How's that for an immersion-breaker?

Sweet! Can you make your captain look like Kirk or Picard?!

Well, given the character creator isn't as extensive as Champion's Online's, and CO's was used to make some pretty good look-alikes, I'm sure you can get close.

:D

If only you could choose a Kirk or Picard voiceset for your captain. :D

I am intrigued now.

There are some naming restrictions. I had a couple rejected during creation and got such a message.

As for BOs, I was doing more reading and it seems like a high level bo at his rank terminal still has access to his lower level skills. Maybe I'll try my klingon later and play with officer skill training to see how its done.

FYI: Those of you wondering about the longevity of this game... apparently Atari has announced that they have surpassed 1,000,000 (1 million) user accounts.

How many of them remain after the first month has yet to be seen.

I'd imagine it follows the same curve of AoC.

Eventually balancing in about 6 months to Sub 250k. (Which mind you is still decent..WoW just seems to be a major imbalancer in the numbers game with over like..13 million?)

I'd imagine it holds a larger portion of its subscribers based on the fact that it's Star Trek, and that a good portion of these players probably never played an MMO before, hence have no comparison of "suck".

If that's the case, Sunny (lots of new players brought in by the Trek name, non MMO vets), they should be more likely to stick, as they have no previous frame of reference. STO will be their base MMO, and they will tend to like it, due to that reason. Look at all the MMO vets who still have that special glow for UO, EQ, SWG, etc, mostly just because it was their first....

Honestly, I didn't know that. I had figured there would be conflicts, simply because I couldn't name two ships the same thing in open beta. I had to re-name my starter ship something else to reuse the name on my cruiser.

i am tempted to drop cash on this and just abuse the free month that comes with it.

I was a huge fan of the Starfleet Command games and this seems to build on the space combat portion quite heavily.

Forgot to mention the few things I uncovered so far about todays patch. Several klingon ships got modified, several were so small not sure you could label as buff or nerf, while a couple of the larger later tier ones got. buffed. They removed the ability to modify weapon fire color hues. And some were also talking about a starbase that seemed to have disappeared.

Well they do have a few restrictions (from the original IP, restricted by what CBS I believe tells them they can/can't use). But otherwise, multiple people can have the same name.

Yes, color hues. Causes an issue identifying damage types, but more importantly it's funny watching Klingon ships explode in purple. Pussies.

And Starbase K7 had disappeared. Yep...

Why do you hate this game so much? :(

I don't hate it. I simply hate the fact that Cryptic ruined the potential of such a good title - granted even by Cryptic's standards STO is pretty damn good. I just know what to expect down the line. Simply put, they disappoint me by putting this title out and expecting it to be magically worth box + subscription costs + microtransactions to boot.

Of course, unfortunately I'm not the head of a game development house - probably for the better due to my exacting standards, so I shouldn't complain should I? :)

It's probably true. Although I think I disagree about alot of trekkies not playing MMO's until STO. I mean...you can't live in your parents basement without playing some form of game to keep you sane..you can only practice your klingon so many hours a week before becoming fluent.
